Addiction is a treatable chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment and the individual’s life experiences.

They engage in behaviors that become compulsive and continue despite harmful consequences.
Repeated substance use cause changes in the brain affect self-control.

Long term effects on the brain include;
-Impaired learning
-Impaired judgment
-Poor decision making
-Impaired stress response
-Memory problems
-Disturbances in behavior patterns

Treatment approaches for addiction are generally as successful as those for other chronic diseases.
Thus treatment must be tailored to address all the issues identified during initial assessment. So the place of a thorough assessment cannot be over-emphasized.
