SOUTH EAST SENATORS-ELECT DEMANDS EQUITY AND INCLUSIVENESS

CALLS ON THE PRESIDENT-ELECT TO END THE PERCEIVED MARGINALIZATION OF THE SOUTH EAST BY RESISTING THE PLOT TO TAKE THE SENATE PRESIDENCY TO ANOTHER ZONE

INSISTS IT WILL SUPPORT ANY CANDIDATE OF IGBO EXTRACTION FOR SENATE PRESIDENCY

The Senators Elect from the South East Zone rose from a meeting held today at the maitama residence of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah with a demand for an end to the perceived marginalisation of Ndi Igbo in the affairs of the country.

The South East Senate Caucus, at the end of the meeting that lasted several hours, came up with the following resolutions.

• They observed with dismay the antics of persons with vested selfish interests who having planted themselves around the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu vowed to shut out the South East from the Senate Presidency of the 10th Senate, which to them is unfortunate.

• They stressed that beyond ethnic and religious considerations, in the forthcoming 10th Senate, the Southeast is blessed with ranking Senators-elect including members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) who have the cranial capacity, competence, influence, experience and political followership to pilot the affairs of the Red Chamber, stressing that it becomes imperative that the All Progressives Congress upholds the Principle of Natural Justice and Equity which it preaches, by zoning the seat of Senate President to the South East region.

• They opined that the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should extend the same democratic opportunity he received from the outgoing administration which gave all aspirants equal opportunity to exercise their fundamental and constitutional rights during the APC Presidential Primaries and should be conscious of the grave implications of zoning and endorsing a candidate from the South-South without any regard for the Southeast, as such moves will no doubt serve as a recipe for Injustice which will culminate to restiveness in the 10th Senate.

• They, therefore, implored the President-elect to be sensitive to the times in Nigeria and ensure that the country continues to thrive on the stance of equity, unity and fairness to the tripod of Nigeria (Hausa Igbo and Yoruba) and the geopolitical zones.

• They, however, opined that the country is already divided along ethnic and religious lines due to the exclusion of the Southeast region, which formed the major reason, the APC received the number of votes from the Southeast and therefore asked the incoming Administration of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to correct this anomaly by ensuring that the Southeast is allowed to produce the next Senate President.

• They lamented the side-lining of the Southeast from producing the Presidential candidates of the two major political parties before the general elections and stressed that the only means through which the zone can be compensated and given a sense of belonging is for the zone to produce the next Senate President as this will restore confidence of the people from the south-east and indeed all Nigerians in the unity of the country.

• They called on the APC as a matter of national urgency to rise above primordial and political interests and shun the winner takes all syndrome by pursuing ethnoreligious inclusivity and a strong, virile, united, progressive, prosperous, equitable and just democratic nation

• They queried how an average Igbo man would feel if they were to be handed this humiliation as the president-elect begins his tenure bearing in mind that the South East has been denied the chance of producing the president of Nigeria since 1966.
The South South having produced president for six years and also had Deputy Senate President in the outgoing administration. The only zone in the South that has not been favoured is the South East.

• They insisted that the outcry of marginalization by the South East and the entire Igbo should be addressed by the incoming administration rather than aggravating it. The South West has President, the North East has Vice President, it is only just that the least position at the moment that can assuage the South East is the chance to be the President of the 10th Senate.

• On this note, they collectively resolved to support the Southeast aspirants of the APC. They remain committed and have since expanded negotiations with other well-meaning Senators-elect to rally round the South East to ensure that justice, fairness, and unity of the country prevail.

• They remain hopeful that together they shall achieve a harmonious 10th Senate and deepen democracy, fairness, and the unity of our dear country.

The senators who attended the meeting and signed the communique include
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator Osita Izunaso, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Ezenwa Oyewuchi, Senator Tony Nwoye, Senator PC Ndubueze, Senator Okey Ezea , Senator Kelvin Chukwu and Senator Osita Ngwu.

APC CHIEFTAIN HON. CHUKWUMA UMEOJI MAKES A CASE FOR THE RELEASE OF NNAMDI KANU

– Says Nnamdi Kanu’s release crucial to peace in South East

The member of the House of Representatives, representing Aguata Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Chukwuma Umeoji, has charged the Federal Government to release detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB) as means of addressing current security and social-economic challenges in the South East.

Umeoji, who is also the All Progressives Congress ( APC) senatorial candidate for Anambra South senatorial zone, said the Monday sit-at-home and mandatory sit-at-home any day Kanu is scheduled to appear in court, and the violence that accompanies the enforcement is crippling social-economic activities in the zone.

The lawmaker noted that the release of the IPOB leader will help to reduce political tension in the South East, as well as free the soldiers engaged in operations in area to be deployed to other parts of the country under constant attacks by terrorists. He added that of all the problems in the various geo-political zones across the country, that of the South East is the easiest to solve.

“ The government should as a matter of urgency do all within its powers to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention in view of the increasing concern about his health and prevent and save the total collapse of the economic and social activities in the South east.

According to him, “the Monday sit at home and the mandatory sit at home on court days have stifled economic activities. The violence accompanying the enforcement of the sit at home has made it impossible for people to visit the villages for social functions. The rural markets and the entertainment industry have collapsed since there is no capital flow from the urban areas. Most worrisome is the speed with which small and medium scale enterprise are migrating to other zones.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu will stop the sit at home and revive the economy of the South East. The release will reduce political tension as well as free the soldiers engaged in operations in the South East to be deployed to other volatile areas where there is constant attack by international terrorist organisations.”

Umeoji, while noting that the agitation in the South East is a fallout of the marginalization of the zone in key government and capital projects, said the solution to the security challenges in the area lies in dialogue and constructive engagement and not force of arms.

According to him, “the government of President Mohammad Buhari has done well in the area of roads maintainence in the South East crowned by the completion and commissioning of the landmark second Niger Bridge by the end of this year. The release of Nnamdi Kanu will also be recorded as another historical gesture by the government to the people of the zone.

“The solution to the security challenge of the South East be addressed by dialogue and constructive engagement not by force of arms. The agitations grew out of clear cases of marginalization of the Igbos in key government appointments and major capital projects. The lack of the presence of the national rail lines, gas pipeline projects and functional sea port in the South East and South South zones are part of the problems.

“There is also the lack of adherence to the constitutional principle of Federal Character in recruitment in Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals; the perceived unwillingness to operate true federalism and the restructuring of certain sections of the constitution.

“There is a general acceptance that policing, power; mining should be handled by the states. The revenue generation should be a major consideration in the allocation of resources to stimulate resourcefulness and competition.

The Story Of Attah Ameh Oboni - the Nigerian King who Chose Su***de Instead of Bowing to the Queen of England.

Attah Ameh Oboni was a revered Igala King.

At a particular meeting held in Kaduna which consisted of all paramount traditional rulers in Nigeria and which had the queen of England in attendance, Attah Ameh was asked to remove his cap to greet the Queen of England as others had done.

Though he refused until they said he should leave the meeting if he would not remove his cap. But Attah was not like others, or was he?

It was a taboo for Attah to remove his cap in the public. The entire hall where they were staying was occupied by swan of bees which emanates from the cap of Attah Ameh Oboni which he removed in order to greet the Queen.

The Queen of England as well as other rulers in the meeting ran helter-skelter except the friendly Oba of Benin who was asked by Attah Ameh to go out before he removed his cap. The hall became empty as some were stung by the bees and the meeting ended.

According to history, Attah Ameh Oboni was asked to be arrested and handcuffed by the security people, which they did, but the handcuffs fell off his hands.

He was later locked up in a room on the instruction of the Northern rulers and guarded by the security personnel but only to find out later by the personnel that he had left the room. Yes, when the security were taking him to be locked up, he told his driver, Amanabo of blessed memory, to take the car and be going to Idah while the security locked him in the room.

He then warned Amanabo not to look back until he felt a cool breeze in the car. Though Amanabo argued a little that he cannot leave the Attah there but later obeyed and started driving back to Idah from Kaduna.

After some time, he felt the cool breeze in the car, and Attah Ameh was sitted inside the car.

The incident in the meeting made many traditional rulers which were mostly northerners to be angry especially making kings run in such a manner because of bees.

This became one important sin, and it was like “one sin too many”.

The queen of Englnad was also not happy and they (the Queen and northern leaders) started looking for a way to remove Attah Ameh from the throne since he was getting tougher and uncontrollable like others, as well as searching for an obedient replacement.

Igala has various cultural festivals, one of which is Ocho. Ocho is celebrated before farming starts, and it is the time that Attah Igala prays to God for sufficient rainfall, bountiful harvest, success in hunting. It is celebrated in the bush and the venue is called Ere-ocho, where the Attah will hunt until he kills a Buffalo or a strong animal. The community in Idah where Ocho takes place is called Ogo-Efa. He performs a little sacrifice to the ancestors using a fowl in the process, and this was to find out if there will blessings or problems in the land after the Ocho.

Before this time, the enemies at home (among the Igala people), especially those having connections with the leaders of the northern region, were working hard to get any evidence either true or false which can be used to remove him from the throne. The blood of the animal used as sacrifice at Ocho ground now became what the enemies would use against him.

Petition was written by these two Igala people to the Queen and some other Northern leaders that Attah Ameh was sacrificing humans during the Ocho festivals. Since they were looking for any means to displace him with, judgment was quickly passed that he must be dethroned, even when investigations were not yet concluded.

In addition, all the Igala cultural festivals including the Ocho were immediately banned and this remained for almost 63 years until Governor Yahaya Bello unbanned them based on the appeal of the present Attah Igala.

Already, before this time, the Oba of Benin who had such friction with the British had already been dethroned and banished from Benin. So, Attah Ameh Oboni knew that at that point, no matter what spiritual approach applied, it can only postpone the evil day as his enemies will never relent until he was removed by them.

The result of the blood sample which was taken from the Ocho venue and taken to University of Ibadan for analysis had arrived and it was proved that it was the blood of an animal and not human. Sadly, the revered King, Attah Ameh had passed on before the result was brought.

But Attah Ameh, being very sure that he was wrongly accused and framed up by his enemies, especially those from Igala who wrote the petition against him marking the beginning of his planned dethronement, made some pronouncements before his death.

He was allegedly quoted to have said that ” the person who wrote the petition against him would have that hand dried up, and that the leader of the gang or petitioners would be buried three times”. And they all came to pass.

While the hand dried as said, the other was buried as stated, first was the leg, second was his hand and the third was himself, all buried at various times at different locations.

In addition, as this information of his dethronement was given to him in a meeting from where he was supposed to go back to Idah and prepare to leave the throne, he stopped on the way in another Igala land called Dekina.

That was where he committed su***de.

Before taking his life, he was allegedly quoted to have said that the town, Dekina will be popular but its development will not be as much as its popularity.

He was also quoted to have said that because Igala was the genesis of his ordeal, there will be disunity among the Igala people until the reign of his own blood (son) as Attah, and all Igalas irrespective of their locations will be reunited again.

I think from the reconnection and reunification of Igala people across Nigeria and beyond which has been going on and still going on under the reign of his son, Agabaidu Idakwo Ameh Oboni II, the present Attah Igala, that pronouncement of reunification of Igala people is also coming through..
