CHAPTER 1

MISTAKEN IDENTITY.

"I'm not a thief"!

within the welfare center dormitory a nine year old girl faced everyone suspicious,her eyes red. She had a pair of large, watery eyes and was radiantly beautiful. However, her body looked frail due to malnutrition.

Seeing everyone look at her with disdain and hate, she felt wronged and choked, “That medallion… is… It is mine! I’m… I’m not a thief! My mom left that behind for me!”

“So what you’re saying is that I stole your stuff?!” Standing opposite her was a girl about her age. Tilting her head, the girl eyed her coldly before she turned to smile innocently at the other children.

Compared to her, the girl looked sweet and proud, as though she were a lofty, little princess showered with everyone’s love.

As soon as she spoke, the children around them immediately came to her defense.

“You’re obviously lying! You’re lying! Why would Madaline steal your stuff?!”. Paula, who had always wanted to become Madaline friend defended immediately.

"I believe princess Madaline, she will never steal anyone stuff, you are clearly the big thief here Ana!"

"I clearly did not know Ana was a thief until now"!!

"And she did also have the guts to lie against madaline,how could you be such a big liar Ana!!"

“Right, right! That’s impossible! How is madaline a thief? Clearly, it’s you who stole her thing!"paula defended again.

Seeing everyone on her side, Madaline secretly let out a sinister smile.

"How could you be so cruel paula aha,that medallion Belongs to Ana"! Apirl, Ana best friend defended".

" And how could you be so sure Apirl aha, what prove do you have that this medallion Belongs to Ana, the last time I checked, Ana could not even remember her name, when she was brought into the orphanage,so don't you even dare to defend her lies"! Madaline rebuked April sternly.

Madaline starred daggers at Ana"if you all think am lying you can ask Ana"!

Faced with all their condemnations and questions, Ana was unable to give any convincing explanations to defend herself. Absolutely aggrieved, she rubbed her eyes bitterly and burst into tears.

“That is really my medallion! Give it back…."Ana says admist tears.

”Madaline eyed her gloatingly and turned to speak to everyone, “Everyone, it’s clear! Ana is the thief! Don’t play with her anymore! Thieves are bad!”

Several children vigorously nodded their heads. “Uh-huh! Let’s listen to Princess Madaline! Ignore her in future! She’s a thief!”

She’s a thief! Ana is a bad girl! Stealing Madaline's thing, shame on you!”

The children roared with laughter as they dispersed.

"Come Ana let's go, let's leave here". Apirl said starring daggers at Madaline, while dragging Ana along.

"The medallion is really mine Apirl, I will never steal anyone stuff". Ana says while sobbing as Apirl could only look at her friend with pity.

Madaline let out a sinister smile and turn to paula "let's go". Just as they were about to move a boy about her age blocked their way.
"Madaline"
"Get out of my way AJ?" Madaline barked.
"That medallion Belongs to Ana,give it back to her." AJ commanded.

"Shut up AJ, you don't have any proof,this medallion Belongs to Madaline,Ana stole it."paula defended sharply.

"You better be silent paula, am ain't speaking to you".AJ snapped and faced Madaline

"I don't care who you believe AJ, this medallion Belongs to me".

"Humph, so wicked" AJ walks away angrily.
"I know you like Ana, AJ and that's why you're always against me tsk, tsk, tsk.,... let's go paula."...The duo walks away.

AJ walks to Ana"I believe you Ana, Madaline is so wicked and manipulicious!

"Yes Ana, I and AJ believes you, we have been friends since we were little, we will never Abadone you, It's Best you forget about the medallion Ana" .April consoled her friend.

Ana leaned against a wall. She held back her tears as she gazed at paula and Madaline's backs, tightly clenching her fists.

Madaline smiled as she looks at the medallion.
"No paula we ain't friends,don't overestimate yourself"

Paula's smile suddenly fades

Outside the orphanage, a roll of black cars lined up as a man in his late fourties step out from one of the cars. The man was surprised to see alot reporters in front of the orphanage but remain composed. As the reporters lurking around rushed towards him with their cameras.

"Mayor Donmante, why are you suddenly at the orphanage today?".A female reporter asked.

"Well I'm here to give gift to the children as usual". Donmante said camly.

"Mayor Donmante, it's been so many years now since your wife and daughter passed away ain't you planning on getting married and having another child."

"Well there won't be any need for that Mr. Journalist, because I already have alot of children to take care of and that's why am here today to visit them."

"That is a good determination mayor Donmante, the people of Las Espadas must be happy to hear this."

"We are very opportuned to have you as the mayor of Las Espadas."

Just as Donmante thought he was going to be free from the reporters questions an unknown man suddenly chimmed in from nowhere..

"Are you sure about this mayor Donmante, six Years ago, your lovely wife Eduarda and your three year old daughter Miramante, died in a car accident, have you ever thought of investigating the cause of that car accident"?.

Immediately as these words were heard, the reporters who were calm became agile and began bombarding Donmante with questions...

"Mayor Donmante how come the people do not know that mam Eduarda and her daughter was killed in a car accident".

"Did you really kept this away from the masses on purpose".

"Mayor Donmante we demand an explanation for this".

Donmante did not expect that the true death of his wife and daughter would be expose to his face so bizarrely and so did not know how to react. He was speechless in front of the camera for the first time since he entered politics.

"Mayor Donmante why did you lie about your wife and daughter's death!"

"Yes mayor Donmante you told us that a similar disease kill them both, the masses took pity on you and send their condolence what do you take the masses for mayor Donmante!"

"Mayor Donmante did you kill wife and daughter?"

"Mind your words miss journalist if you demand an explanation for this, there would be a press conference to answer all your questions!"

Espiranto, Donmante's assistant couldn't help but say when he saw Donmante speechless
he waves his hands in dismissal and lead Donmante into the orphanage, while the entourage stayed back to hold the angry reporters.

His entourage tried to chase reporters away. While the unknown man, who had cause the choas entered into his limo jeep and speed off, even before Donmante or reporters could get a glimpse of him. But a male reporter, who was quick enough was able to know that this unknown man, was claded in black suit and dark shade and took a picture of him.

Donmante stepped into the orphanage absent minded. Six years ago, Eduarda and Miramante his three year daughter died in a fatal car accident.
Even if he had wanted to investigate, there was no clue. The car was burnt to ashes, neither the mother or the child's body was found to be buried. He had investigated but it was effortless, and the case was closed. He did not remarry because he still love Eduarda and Miramante.
Now that the past has come lurking Around, his political career is sure to be tanned.

Donmante could not help but be thrown into deep thoughts and did not know when he bumped into Madaline.

"Ouch" Madaline whimpers in pain, as the medallion fell from her hand.
Donmante felt sorry for the child and was about to pick her up, when he caught sight of the medallion.
Madaline saw this and began to fidget, quickly she picked up the medallion and placed it behind her back.
Donmante recognized the medallion to be a gift, he had given Eduarda years ago, as an anniversary present when they were much in love with each other, before the cold hands of death took her away.
Madaline looked at the man before her warily.

"What is your name child?" Donmante finally asked after a moment of silence.

"Ma.. Madaline"

"And where did you get the necklace from?"

Madaline stiffened for a moment before smiling sweetly "My mom gave it to me, before she passed away".

Donmante could not react for moment as he thought he was dreaming or actually seen his deceased daughter's ghost.
Everyone including himself thought that Eduarda and little Miramante died in a fatal car accident, but unknown to everyone that the child survived and has been in the same town with him, how come he never knew since all these years.
It could be that the child survived it, perhaps Eduarda must have risk her life in saving the child, he blamed himself for not investigating about the death case, of his wife and daughter six years ago, he also blamed his father and that witch...
Donmante's thought was running wild as his mind was in a total mess.
Donmante squats, held Madaline and drew her close to himself slowly.
"Come child, come, let father have a close look at you"

"Okay" she took two steps

He access Madaline, whose heart was already palpitating.

"Let me have a close look at the medallion child"
Madaline slowly released her hand as Donmante took the medallion to examine it, suddenly he cocked the medallion open as his curiosity was clarified.

But then, he looked at the girl who did not resemble his little deceased daughter Miramante, but knowing that it's being six years, and his little Mira must have grown up, his doubt was cleared, and seeing Eduarda's medallion with her, he then concluded that Eduarda must have given it to her, so that he can easily find her, With that he stood up, holding Madaline's hand.

Donmante did not know if he should be happy or sad,he has mixed feeling of seeing his deaceased daughter again, but his eyes were determined.
"Come with me child"

In the director's office
"Good day Mayor Donmante, I'm very pleased to see you"
"Please, have your seat,I am here to adopt this child, any details or medical report about her?"

The director is shocked that the Mayor wants to adopt a child, but kept her emotions and quickly brought out Madaline's file.

"According to our research, she was brought to the orphanage six years ago."
The director flipped the file.
"Medical report says that she suffers from animesia, she was given "Madaline" by one of the teachers, she could not remember her name when she was brought to the orphanage."

Madaline stood besides Donmante like a harmless girl, but in her mind, she was glad she had pretended to have animesia. Back then when Madaline was brought to the orphanage by a good samaritan, she pretended not to remember anything, and took the initiative not to answer any of the teachers questions. A teacher had looked at her with pity, and named her 'Madaline', thinking that the little girl must have lost her memory. Not knowing that the six year old Madaline was angry she had been brought to the orphanage, but now,she is glad to had faked everything back then.

Seeing Donmante silent the director thought he was displeased about the child, because of the medical report, to avoid discouraging him about adopting the child, she quickly chimmed in.... "school report also says she's sharp, quick-witted and brilliant in class and also good at drawing"

"Make arrangements for her to come with me this instinct"

"Right away mayor Donmante".

Espiranto brings out a check with a large amount from the briefcase and handing it over to her. The director accepted it with a smile as she brings out a document requesting for the buyer signature. Donmante signed It quickly and brought Madaline away.

"The reporters are still outside waiting, I advise we take another route"

"No Espiranto, this is the right time to prove something to those big mouths."

Outside the orphanage the reporters, who were waiting angrily, are surprised to see Donmante accompanied by a little girl.Their anger dissipated and the topic was changed in blink of an eye.

"Mayor Donmante have you suddenly change your mind and decide to adopt another child in replacement of your deceased daughter?"

"Please watch your mouth Mr. Journalist! I did not just adopt a random child, this is Eduarda's deceased daughter Miramante."

The reporters were unable to react in a moment as everyone starred at the little girl in awe

"Mayor Donmante what evidence do you have, that this child is Eduarda's deceased daughter"
Seen that someone has spoken the others followed.

"Yes Donmante, please tell us have you suddenly carried out a D.N.A test on the child"

"We need an explanation for this mayor Donmante, some moments ago someone said to have witnessed Eduarda and little Miramante death, and suddenly you stand here to tell us that, this is your deceased daughter Miramante"

Donmante paid no attention to the reporters and calmly raised to the medallion. "I did not carry out a D.N.A test, but this is my evidence"
The reporters went crazy and started taking photos of the medallion.

Madaline is almost blinded by the camera's light as she hid behind Donmante.

The entourage secured Madaline and Donmante into the car.

Meanwhile, Ana climed the black iron railings in a distance, and with dull eyes she watched as Madaline followed a group of men in suit into an extended bentley

The moment the door of the vehicle closed, Madaline coldly gazed towards Ana direction.

coincidentally their sight collided, Madaline smiled slyly at her before the car window rolled up and the vehicle drove to into a distance.

Thus, the lives of two children took an unexpected turn. .
