UBTH Among Six Facilities Set to Benefit from FG, NSIA MOU to Boost Cancer Treatment
In a monumental stride towards enhancing cancer treatment nationwide, the Federal Government, in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), has taken a significant step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, March 22, 2024. This historic agreement aims to bolster oncology care across the country, with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) being among the six designated facilities set to benefit.
Under the visionary leadership of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and the Managing Director of NSIA, Mr. Aminu Umar-Sadiq, this collaboration heralds a new era in cancer treatment. The agreement entails the procurement of state-of-the-art oncology equipment for designated teaching hospitals, including UBTH, marking a crucial milestone in the fight against cancer.
Prof. Pate aptly described the event as a watershed moment, signaling hope for thousands of Nigerians battling cancer. He emphasized the urgent need to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancers, in the country.
Echoing Prof. Pate's sentiments, Mr. Umar-Sadiq highlighted the role played by NSIA in revolutionizing cancer care through the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre. He expressed enthusiasm for replicating this success across the country, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to world-class oncology facilities.
UBTH's inclusion in this transformative initiative underscores its critical role in advancing healthcare delivery in Nigeria. With the support of the Federal Government and NSIA, UBTH is poised to become a center of excellence for cancer patients nationwide.

In pursuit of our mission to excel in healthcare delivery, education and research, the Department of Periodontics, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), in collaboration with the Healing Hands Health Society, organized a transformative one-day implantology workshop.
This workshop was meticulously designed to provide dental students and resident doctors with invaluable hands-on experience in implant placement, under the expert guidance of Dr. Uvoh Onoriobe, President of the Healing Hands Health Society, and the inauguration of the Benin Implant Club in UBTH.
The inauguration of the Benin Implant Club within UBTH stands as a monumental achievement, underscoring the organization's and UBTH's unwavering commitment to addressing global health disparities and elevating quality of life. With a focused dedication to bridging knowledge gaps and facilitating expertise transfer within African dental schools and hospitals, this initiative embodies and matches our vision of being a beacon of excellence in dental education, and Healthcare service delivery.
To date, the collaborative efforts have culminated in three successful implant workshops, benefiting faculty, residents, and dental students alike at both the University of Benin and University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The most recent workshop, graciously hosted by the Department of Periodontics on February 21, 2024, saw the provision of essential resources for implant procedures. These resources, including Coxo implant motors, surgical kits for MSDI implant systems, study models, dummy implants, implant fixtures, and parts, were leased to the Dental Center at UBTH for a period of one year. This lease agreement, subject to review after the stipulated period, aims to facilitate comprehensive training opportunities for dental students and resident doctors.
We trust that this invaluable opportunity will be maximized by our students, interns, and residents, fostering their growth and proficiency in implantology. Through this collaboration, UBTH is poised to emerge as a leading center for implant placement in Nigeria, further solidifying our position as a leading healthcare institution in West Africa.
Brain malfunction, deterioration, and psychological disturbances are just a few of the detrimental impacts that substance abuse inflicts upon children and adolescents.
