General Hospital Badagry Injects Fresh Breath In Accidents and Emergency Care

The Management of the General Hospital Badagry is poised to deliver improve and memorable experience for accident victims and emergency patients, as it injected a fresh breath into its accidents and emergency treatments with the opening of its newly renovated and upgrade of Accidents and Emergency Centre in the hospital.

The Medical Director/CEO, Dr. Olatunde Bakare directed the opening of the new Centre to commence immediate operation almost a fortnight ago, after its successful completion and stock of medical equipment needed, including other electronic appliances for a smooth take- off, actually commenced on Friday, 9th June, 2023.

Due to increase in the number of accidents and emergency cases which partly was arisen from bunkering and over speeding on the roads, the Management contended with several casualty cases that informed its decision to go on renovation and expansion of the Centre, and consequently relocated its accident and emergency patients between December 2020 and January, 2021 to the Orthopedic Clinic.

Before the relocation and before its Maternal and Child Centre (MCC) was created by the State Government, the Centre had attended to different emergency cases such as; medical emergency, children emergency, pregnant emergency, gynecology emergency, and surgical emergency, so far the cases are emergencies.

However, with the existence of the Maternal and Child Centre (MCC), Obstetrics and Gynecology cases and Paediatric emergencies became the responsibilities of the Maternal and Child Centre (MCC).

While, the new upgrade Accidents and Emergency Centre now attends mainly to adult emergency cases, and these include medical and surgery emergencies, and the Centre is meant to stabilize this category of patients within twenty –four hours, after which they are transfer to either the male or female ward for continuing medical examinations and medications until they are safe for discharge from the hospital.

The Centre has four sections and separate procedural room to treat wound dressing, injections and catheterization. These sections are; triage, male, female and suturing –RTA. The last is used for patients with assault cases

Finally, the Centre is equipped with ten bed spaces and five couches, Patient’s Lockers, Doctors’ Call Room, Nurses Call Room, Storage Section, Air-Conditioners, and Ceiling Fans.

GH Badagry: A Preliminary Report Of Assessments

In my preliminary assessments of the General Hospital Badagry in the last seventy-two hours of assuming duties as the Hospital's Public Affairs Officer, I have seen a new healthcare system with improved quality service delivery to the host communities, and I will like to enumerate as follows:

First, the transformation of the secondary health facilities by Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State has been unprecedented in the history of health facilities in the State and this is verifiable, given the demonstration of commitments by the present Administration to its "Health and Environment Policy" that comes second in the T. H. E. M. E. S. Agenda of the State Government.

The General Hospital Badagry among other twenty-eighth secondary health facilities are fast becoming products of a Smart City, "A Greater Lagos" envisaged by the performing Governor of Lagos State in 2019. Perhaps, the importance of putting a good system in place to work and accommodate every resident in the twenty-first century economy must be appreciated by all residents of our host communities due to the surge in population that is counting every hour according verified statistics.

The General Hospital Badagry was established in 1951 and is presently among the few others across the five divisions of the State that would be made tertiary health institutions to support the bulging population of the State in the upcoming "A Greater Lagos Rising" mantra of Mr. Governor's second term bid. Currently, there is a process corroborating the belief of the State Government that public health facilities in the State can offer first-class service to the citizenry.

Every morning, the management led by the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. S. O. Bakare has a Nurse that delivers health education to all patients at the waiting arena called "Triage" very close to the entrance gate. This is done daily to enhance a friendly working environment between healthcare workers and the public. This approach is helping to promote urgent attention for all patients and has far removed all forms of barriers and minimize delay hitherto associated with the general hospitals.

Another value critical to the implementation of the T. H. E. M. E. S. Agenda of the State Government is "Technology" as a complement of "Education" in the first "E" pillar of this Agenda, is the major driver of "Making Lagos A Twenty-First Century Economy" as well as the totality of the Six-Pillar Development Plan of the State Government.

With Lagos' evolving Smart City, the health facilities including this general hospital now practice "Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as a system in the developed countries where patients are seen daily through this operation, has worked faster to prevent the weight of carrying manual files of patients to various clinics in the hospital and the possibility of being misplaced hinder patients from accessing quality health care.

In my research on the use of EMR in the General Hospital Badagry, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer who assumed office barely two years ago made it possible as some general hospitals in the State are yet to clinch the benchmark set by the State Government with a deadline for April 2023. Presently, the hospital which he met on State Level Two has risen to State Level Three and now on State Level Four-a Tertiary Level.

In the General Hospital Badagry, patients now have a Smart Card which they bring to the hospital and they are well informed about how to do their registration with the EMR. The EMR will eventually allocate to each patient a clinic where he or she has been assigned to see a doctor and also use the Smart Card to pay for the service to be rendered. No member of staff collect money from any patient for health care. This same system enables patients referral to any Lagos State Hospital with provision of clinical history through the EMR ahead of arrival.

Also, all patients at the Triage section are detailed by a Nurse every morning as regard their right to be assigned to a particular doctor in continuation of their medical treatments if they choose to. At the point of registration, every patient are cleared and assigned to different clinics where particular doctors are waiting to attend to each of them. In a situation where a patient is not sure of the location of his or her clinic, he or she is already briefed to come back to meet the Nurse at the General Out-Patients Department (G. O. P. D) ward including where to access different health services.

Before now, a persistent problem in the general hospitals is lack of immediate attention for patients. This has fizzled out with major upgrade of the general hospitals. Despite the crowd in the General Hospital Badagry, the number dislodged in no distant time because of friendly environment to which the management and staff of the hospital are committed as healthcare workers.

Beyond partisan, General Hospital Badagry is an essential service to its host communities and would continue to promote this value to all residents and visitors, and should be embraced by all to further promote the well-being of the generality of the people in the environment.

The General Hospital Badagry premises in spite of its expanse land comprising of Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC) and School of Anaesthetic Studies has maintained a serene, aesthetic and cleaner environment.

Residents of the communities including the well-meaning members of society should support the hospital and encourage the health workers to continue to rendered their best services to the communities. It has taken just a woman of substance like a million to establish and pursue the continuous improvement of Alimosho General Hospital Igando for quality healthcare delivery to residents in that vast area of the State. This gesture needs to be emulated by some of our people as stakeholders for the General Hospital Badagry, bearing in mind that, there is nothing to give the hospital that can be too much, especially if we consider the location, the hospital spent twice to acquire its consumables than Alimosho General Hospital, Igando.

The General Hospital Badagry is blessed with staff who are indigenes across all cadres from medical doctors downward, and I have identified some of these in the course of my duties.

In order to accommodate every resident in the State on its health policy, the State Government has developed an affordable health insurance scheme (LSHS) for every resident to enrol for individual or family plan. It is called "Ilera Eko" to cascade the State's health policy across all residents in different strata of communities. The health insurance scheme is managed by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) and has an outlet in the General Hospital Badagry.

With Lagos as the fifth largest economy in Africa, the State Government deserves to be commended for prioritizing the health of its residents. Health is wealth and the more healthy the residents, the more the wealth of the State. Therefore, health is the panacea for a prosperous Nation.

Yesterday, an accident at Sultan Beach on the expressway to Seme-border which involved an Okada bunkerers and a vehicle that claimed five lives due to fire explosion among whom were a police officer and a supposed soldier including one female and three male casualties were brought by men of the Federal Road Safety Corp to the hospital and the casualties were attended to immediately. While the deceased corpses were also deposited at the morgue. Many thanks to the men of the Federal Roads Safety Corp.

Finally, I seize this medium to appreciate my beloved people who took it as a responsibility to welcome me as one of their own as I assumed duties in the hospital.

Let me use this opportunity to solicit for everyone's maximum cooperation as I assure you of my maximum support in ensuring that the hospital and the communities have a mutually beneficial relationship.
