Joshilaay released on this day. Jan 10, 1989 Indian Hindi-language film directed by Sibte Hassan Rizvi. The film stars Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rajesh Vivek. The music was composed by R. D. Burman.

Dharmendra got angry at a trade paper for writing Anil Kapoor's name before Sunny Deol's in the Joshilaay poster. This piece of news made it to all the media. It was Boney Kapoor who would go on to verify the story.

Final film released at Mumbai's iconic Apsara cinema.

Shekhar Kapur abandoned the film halfway due to the script changes which occurred during production.

Apart from the climax, the whole film was shot by Shekhar Kapur (the climax only was shot by the producer).

Shekar Kapur left the film mid way which delayed the film for sometime.

The film had huge expectations but due to its delay it lost its charmed a flopped at the box office.

Rajesh Vivek played the main antagonist which was inspired from iconic character of Gabbar from Sholay 1975.

The music of the film was well received the title song was a hit.

Rajesh Vivek's was quite appreciated but as the film did not do well he did not get more work until Lagaan 2001.

Shekhar Kapur shot this film in Ladakh and also his uncle Dev Anand had shot Ishk Ishk Ishk in Ladakh and Shekhar Kapur was introduced in this film along with Rakesh Pandey, Zarina Wahab and Padmini Kholapure as child artist.

The songs were released in 1985 and the film was released 4 years later in 1989.

Kishore Kumar sang the energetic title song Joshilaay Woh Shehzade Hain Zameen Ke. This is the last song of Kishore Kumar, which was music by R. D. Burman.

Only climax was remaining to be shot Sibte Hassan Rizvi and Shekhar Kapur had misnderstading then Shekhar Kapur backed out of the film after working for the film for 5 years.

The producer had completed the film at studio after he took over the film. During about six years of making of Joshilaay, this film was always in the main news and conterversis in all those years.

Pravin Bhatt was the cinematographer of this film but because of the climate of Ladhakh he had to leave the film and Dilip Mukherjee did the photoraphy, when the producer took over the film the photography was done by Chang. So the film had three cinematographer.

Joshilaay was overshot and went over budget, the materials used for the shooting of this film was enough for making two films. The origional editor of this film Renu Saluja found difficult to edit the film. Then I.M.Kunnu edited the film when the producer took over to complete the film.

When Shekhar Kapur was directing this film, Pravin Bhatt and Dilip Mukherjee were the cinematographers and Renu Saluja was editor and when Sibte Hassan Rizvi took over the the cinematographer was Chang and the editor was I.M.Kunnu.

Before Joshilaay Sibte Hassan Rizvi had produced Ahista Ahista and after Joshilaay he made Awaaz De Kahan Hai which had music by Naushad who had also written the story of the film.

When Shekhar Kapur left Joshilaay, he was also making. films like Dushmani & Time Machine.

Shekhar Kapoor's uncle Vijay Anand gave the mahurat clap during the launching of this film Joshilaay in the year 1983.

Kamal Haasan was signed for the film but was dropped due to getting injured. Anil Kapoor replaced him.

Jaya Pradha was offered the film in 1983. The role was opposite Anil Kapoor . She declined as she thought he was too small a star .

During the film's mahurat, the lead actors were to say their assigned dialogues, and then say "Joshilaay!" at the end. After Sunny Deol said his lines, Anil Kapoor decided he wanted to gain a advantage over Sunny. Anil said his dialogues, then went on to add and improvise extra lines for himself ! This did not go down well with Dharmendra and Sunny Deol. They realized what Anil had done and why. This would mark the beginning of the Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor war for years.

Sunny Deol was extremely upset the film was delayed. It was suppose to release in 84/85.

Dev Anand daughter Devina traveled with cousin Shekhar Kapoor to Ladakh during the filming of the film. She went as photographer.

The producer was very mad at Javed Akhtar. He was suppose to start writing the script in 1982 and finish in 1983. But the script and dialogues were still incomplete in 1985!. Javed promised he would go on location and write for the film. Shekhar Kapur did not like this. He would have loved the script and dialogues ready.

Vijayta Pandit was signed for the film in 1983 but later dropped for Meenakshi Sheshadri.

The film was titled "Joshilaay Joshilaay" at one point .

The producer claimed that director Shekhar Kapur wasted too much raw stock and that was one of the loss the producer faced.

The second film Shekhar Kapur started after Masoom. Joshilaay was action film completely different from Masoom. Nobody from the star cast of Masoom was repeated in Joshilaay.

Sixty Seconds to What? (For A Few Dollars More, 1965) was sampled for the song "Joshilaay Woh Shehzaade" by Kishore Kumar.

Only film time Sridevi and Meenakshi acted in a film.Mahaguru 1985 Meenakshi played the lead while Sridevi appeared in a song.

Rajesh Vivek was to be introduced as villain in the film similar to what Amjad Khan was in Sholay 1975.Film credits also show his name as introducing Rajesh Vivek,as he film was delayed by four years he worked in films like Jaanbaaz 1986 and Veerana 1988 where he gained popularity as Baba in Veerana for his negative character.

Padmini Kolhapure was initial choice opposite Anil Kapoor.

There were reports that the producer was going to sign Rekha for the role opposite Anil Kapoor. Dharmemdra opposed this and wanted a less popular heroine for Anil as he wanted Sunny to have a edge over Anil. Finally Meenakshi was agreed upon.

Producer Gulshan Rai objected to the title Joshilaay as he felt the title sounded too close to his production Joshila. He made a official complaint to the filmboard and lost.

Its said the story of the Sunny Deol and Anil Kapoor movie Joshilaay, was inspired by Do Waqt Ki Roti, as the writer and makers thought that Do Waqt Ki Roti was already shelved. After about 10 years Do Waqt Ki Roti was revived, completed and released 1 year before Joshilaay.

Before approaching the writer Gulzar for Masoom, on the advise of Shabana Azmi, Shekhar Kapur approached Javed Akhtar to write script and dialogue. But Javed Akhtar quoted very big amount. Shekhar Kapur thought the amount was big and not working out. Then Shekhar Kapur approached to Gulzar for Masoom. But Javed Akhtar and Shekhar Kapur came together later with Joshilaay & Mr.India. Shabana Azmi thought that Javed Akhtar and Shekhar Kapur together they will form very good team that's why she thought Javed Akhtar should work in Masoom. But Gulza did very good in Masoom.

While accepting the award from Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu, Dharmendra became emotional and remarked that he had never won any Filmfare award in the Best Actor category despite having worked in so many successful films and nearly a hundred popular movies. Speaking on this occasion Dilip Kumar commented, "Whenever I get to meet with God Almighty, I will set before Him my only complaint – why did you not make me as handsome as Dharmendra?"

He experimented with film production; he launched both of his sons in films: Sunny Deol in Betaab (1983) and Bobby Deol in Barsaat (1995) as well as his nephew Abhay Deol in Socha Na Tha (2005). He was the presenter for his films like Satyakam (1969) and Kab Kyun Aur Kahan (1970). In one of her interviews, actress Preity Zinta has been quoted as saying that Dharmendra is her favourite actor. She recommended him to play her father's role in Har Pal (2008).

After a four-year hiatus from acting since 2003, he reappeared in films as a character actor in 2007 in Life in a... Metro and Apne; both films were both critically and commercially successful. In the latter, he appears with both his sons, Sunny and Bobby for the first time. His other release was Johnny Gaddaar. Vidhaata (transl. Creator) released on this day. Dec 03, 1982 Indian action drama film directed by Subhash Ghai and produced by Gulshan Rai under his own production company Trimurti Films. It stars Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Padmini Kolhapure, Madan Puri, Amrish Puri, Suresh Oberoi, Sarika in pivotal roles. The film was remade in Kannada as Pithamaha, in Malayalam as Alakadalinakkare, and in Tamil as Vamsa Vilakku. Vidhaata was the highest-grossing Indian film of 1982 and the fifth highest-grossing Indian film of the decade, when adjusted for inflation, being declared an "All Time Blockbuster" at the box office

During early 1980's Dilip Kumar was a big major actor playing central and important roles. Subhash Ghai went on to sign Jackie Shroff to play Madan Puri's son Ponchi (the role done by Gautam Sarin) for Vidhaata after seeing Jackie Shroff's work in Swami Dada, but when Subhash Ghai met Jackie, he requested him not to do Vidhaata, instead he told Jackie not to do more films as supporting actor and told Jackie to wait for him. Jackie obliged and thus blockbuster Hero 1983 was the result. Dilip Kumar & Shammi Kapoor first time came together, after being in the same industry for many years. Suresh Oberoi was a new actor at that time, he got small roles in big films. For the first time Kader Khan wrote dialogues for Dilip Kumar. Then later Subhash Ghai repeated Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar & Amrish Puri in his next film Hero. Madan Puri was common actor for Subhash Ghai (except Krodhi) from Kalicharan to Hero, while Amrish Puri became common actor for Subhash Ghai from this film.

Sanjay Dutt's drug addiction was at an all time high during the shooting of this film. Subhash Ghai, tired of the endless problems he faced because of this, decided to remove Sanjay Dutt from his next film 'Hero'.

Only time Sanjay Dutt and Sarika acted together.

Sanjay Dutt's mother Nargis has acted in films with Dilip Kumar and in this film her son acted with Dilip Kumar and also Sanjay Dutt's father Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar were given the post as Sherrif of Bombay in the 1980s.

Vidhaata was the biggest blockbuster of 1982 earning blockbuster status.

Only time 3 legends Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar came together

Anil Kapoor had a habit of visiting Subhash Ghai on the movie sets. He would always ask him to keep him in mind when casting films. It was during the making of Vidhaata that producer Gulshan Rai met Anil Kapoor. He was impressed with how enthusiastic and sincere Anil Kapoor appeared. Gulshan promised Anil that hopefully they would work together. He kept his promise and when Raj Kiran was booted out of Yudh, Anil Kapoor took his place.

Gulshan Rai had signed Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan for the film in 1980. Later Sanjay Dutt took over the role.

Subhash Ghai bashed Sarika and Sanjay Dutt in the media after the film. He stated Sarika acted like she was doing a favor by acting in the film. He went on to add that Sanjay had no intelligence and integrity. He misbehaved with his producers because he was high on drugs at the time. He went to add he could become a star but had bad habits. After the film screening Sunil Dutt asked Ghai to take Sanjay in his next film. Ghai turned around and asked Dutt Saheb if he was in his shoes, would he take Sanjay in his next film? Dutt's drug use had become a major problem during Vidhaata. Ghai complained that Sanjay was slurring during the dubbing of his dialogues.

During the making of Vidhaata Subhash Ghai had faced some problems with Sanjay Dutt beyond circumstances. The filmmaker did not take Sanjay Dutt for Hero and he thought he wouldn't take him again. But later Sanjay Dutt changed completely and become a major star. After about 10 years they worked again in 1993 blockbuster Khalnayak and in other projects.

The song Saat Saheliyan was banned from airwaves by Vividh Bharati for being too vulgar .

Suresh Oberoi has a Special appearance as Inspector Pratap Singh in this movie.

Amjad Khan was also to be in the cast of Vidhaata but it didn't work. He was replaced by Sanjeev Kumar.

As in those days Sarika was seen in many films, she was added to the cast later.

Vidhaata is the film that which put Ghai into the top list of filmmakers. As the result after this film he made Hero under his own production company with newcomers made films which were produced by himself except Meri Jung 1985 for N.N.Sippy as it was an old commitment.

Tina Munim was hell bent on doing the film with her boyfriend Sanjay Dutt. But Subhash Ghai for some reason only wanted Padmini for the film. Tina took the rejection badly.

Subhash Ghai went to Madras to speak to Rati Agnihotri about the film. She heard the script and immediately agreed. But it was Gulshan Rai who did not want Rati in the film. He had heard that she hassled all her producers for shooting dates and did not want to work with her .

The song "Udi Baba" was sampled in the album "Holy Messages Lost in Translation " iNViSiBl. The track name is also titled "Udi Baba".

2 big banner films Vidhaata and Dev Anand's Swami Dada released on the same day in 1982. Babbar Subhash film Taqdeer Ka Badshah was also released on the same day.

The song "Ram Balram" from the album Bombay 2 - Electric Vindaloo, was used in the film. The scene where Kal Penn purchases condoms. The original source of the song was the back ground music from Vidhaata. The scene where Amrish Puri chases Suresh Oberoi to kill him.

During Goa schedule when a car was sent to pick up Dilip Kumar from airport got delayed he decided to travel by taxi and reached the location.Subash Ghai and others apologized him for the same but he politely said such things happen in production.

While shooting the film Dilip Kumar would also ask Subhash Gahi about development of Shammi Kapoor's character in the film as he was also a senior actor and should have a depth in character.

Dilip Kumar told Subash Ghai that he is signing the script as he liked his work in his previous films.

One story about Sanjay Dutt's erratic behavior was that during a scene with Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, Sanjay fell asleep standing. Sanjay could not remember any of this years later.

About 14 years after Sunghursh 1968, Dilip Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar came together in Vidhaata. Amjad Khan was also in the cast of Vidhaata, but then backed out. After the release of Kranti, Dilip Kumar signed this film after Trishul 1978 Gulshan Rai produced Vidhaata.

Sarika and Padmini Kolhapure's second film together. Their first film was Hamara Sansar (1978) where Padmini was a child artist and Sarika was the lead actress opposite Mithun Chakraborty, though Padmini and Sarika didn't had scenes together in either of these films.

The background music played when Amrish Puri's henchman chase Suresh Oberoi in the beginning was released later in a album. The techno dance album " Bombay 2 - Electric Vindaloo" had a track that played that very music with added dance beats. It was originally sampled from Cerrone's Africanism. The song was also used in the gas station scene in "Dude Where Is The Party".

In 1981 producer Gulshan Rai launched 2 films together Vidhaata & Yudh.

Most of the Vidhaata movie was shot in the city of Agra and the residence of Dilip Kumar shown in the film is actually the iconic Mughal Sheraton Hotel of Agra located near Tajmahal.

Subhash Ghai's only film with Padmini Kolhapure.

First film where Sanjay Dutt spotted a mustache.

Padmini Kohlapure's look in the song "Udee Baba" was inspired by Pl***oy bunnies at Hugh Hefner's pl***oy mansion.

After Vidhaata, Dilip Kumar and Subhash Ghai worked together in 2 films Karma & Saudagar. They were to work together 4th time and the film was tittled Homeland, but it couldn't n Be made.

Urmila did only an item number in the movie yet she got the biggest face on movie poster.

Holds the record for the highest number of extras used in a Hindi film and the biggest action sequences filmed in a Hindi film.

Urmila's dance number Chamma Chamma became a big hit it added more flavor to it when the legend Amrish Puri danced with her in the song.

Rajkumar Santoshi had thrown Mamta Kulkarni out of the film citing bad behavior problems. Mamta retorted that she was replaced because she did not sleep with Rajkumar Santoshi. The matter was sorted out and Mamta was back in the film.

The original leading lady was Manisha Koirala.

Ila Arun's character had similar concept from Ghatak 1996 of her husband being killed at the start of the film while he raises his voice against injustice.

The film had its main hero Samir Soni in a supporting role whereas Amrish Puri,Naseeruddin Shah Danny Denzongpa and Om Puri had lead roles.

Amrish puri and Om puri both have similar surname puri and coincidently in this movie too their characters surname are similar and original

In the title sequence,Om Puri's name appears first before Naseeruddin Shah's. This was a first because Naseeruddin Shah was always considered a lead actor and Om Puri and character actor.

The film was inspired from Hollywood film 7 Samurai 1954 and was partly influenced by the classic Sholay 1975.

The film got mix reviews at the time of his release but his considered a classic today.

Mamta Kulkarni got a lead role in the film because Rajkumar Santoshi had promised her role in Ghatak but could only offer her a dance number Koi Jaye Toh Le Aaye.

Urmila Matondkar did the item number, Chamma Chamma. She also did an item number in Aag's(2007) item number "Mehbooba Mehbooba". Aag was a disastrous remake of classic Sholay (1975) which itself was influenced by Akira Kurosawa's Classic movie Seven Samurai. Apparently China Gate was a remake of seven samurai

The last hit and known film of Mamta Kulkarni.

Mukesh Tiwari was nominated for all the awards for his performance in a villainous role ,Flimfare,Zee cine,Sansui Starscreen and Aashirwaad.

During production, the trade was wondering what type of film Rajkumar Santoshi was making without. any lead hero.

Stories of a secret wedding between Tinnu Verma and Mamta Kulkarni did the rounds of the media during the filming. This proved all false.

The intro music of Chamma Chamma from China Gate was sampled from the intro music of "It Is My Love" from Khoon Ka Sindoor .

Jatin Lalit were to do the films music but later opted out.

In the film, only 4 of the 10 military men assembled to combat Jagira survive at the end. As of 2021, 4 of the military men have been deceased, in chronological order: Amrish Puri(d. 2005), Om Puri(d. 2017), Viju Khote(d. 2019) and Jagdeep(d. 2021). Girish Karnad, who played the forest officer killed by Jagira, died in 2019.

Apart from Naseeruddin Shah, most of the lead cast happened to be Rajkumar Santoshi's regular collaborators or had prior worked with him at least once: Viju Khote had appeared in each of Santoshi's previous 4 directorials since GHAYAL(1990), Amrish Puri had worked with Santoshi in all his previous films barring ANDAZ APNA APNA(1995), Om Puri had starred in GHAYAL and GHATAK(1996), Danny Dengzongpa had played the main antagonist Katya in GHATAK, Anjan Srivastava had appeared in DAMINI(1993) and GHATAK, Kulbhushan Kharbanda had appeared in GHAYAL and DAMINI, Jagdeep had appeared in ANDAZ APNA APNA, Tinnu Anand appeared in DAMINI and GHATAK and as per Santoshi's original script was supposed to play crime master Gogo in ANDAZ APNA APNA, Harish Patel had appeared in GHATAK and ANDAZ APNA APNAAPNA, Paresh Rawal had appeared in DAMINI and ANDAZ APNA APNA.

Rajkumar Santoshi later stated "I wouldn't say that the film was a disaster. I think China Gate did reasonably well, even though it did not have a big star. I think what went wrong with the film was that it was released in a rush. I wish it had been given another 40 days or so for the right kind of promotion. The media is so strong these days that one can reach out to the audiences through it and prepare them for what kind of a film it is. I feel more people should make such films. One has to try and make it work."
