At St Jude Women's Clinic your health is our concern...

Here are some common myths about menstruation:

- You can't exercise or swim while menstruating.
- Menstruating women are unclean or "impure."
- Women should avoid certain foods or activities during their periods.
- Menstruation is a sign of weakness or illness.
- Women should feel embarrassed or ashamed about their periods.

These are all false beliefs about menstruation, and they can be harmful and even dangerous. It's important to spread accurate information about menstruation so that people can make informed decisions about their health.

Menstrual Hygiene Is Key in Promoting Good Health

These hygiene practices can help you stay healthy and comfortable during your period:

Wear lightweight, breathable clothing (such as cotton underwear). Tight fabrics can trap moisture and heat, allowing germs to thrive.

Change your menstrual products regularly. Trapped moisture provides a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Wearing a pad or period underwear for too long can lead to a rash or an infection.

Keep your ge***al area clean. Wash the outside of your va**na and bottom every day. When you go to the bathroom, wipe from the front of your body toward the back, not the other way. Use only water to rinse your v***a. The va**na is a self-cleaning organ. Changing the natural pH balance of your va**na by washing or using chemicals to cleanse out the va**na can be harmful and may result in yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

Use unscented toilet paper, tampons, or pads. Scented hygiene products can irritate the skin and impact your natural pH balance.

Drink enough liquids. This can help wash out your urinary tract and help prevent infections, like va**nal candidiasis.

Track and monitor your period. Your menstrual cycle is a valuable marker for your overall health. Irregular periods can be a sign of conditions like diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and celiac disease. You can track your period on a calendar or with an app on your phone designed for this purpose.

Visit a healthcare provider for your annual check-up. An annual well-woman exam is a full check-up includes a pap smear a pelvic exam, and a breast exam. These exams are essential for good reproductive health as they can catch early signs of cancer or other health issues.

Talk to a doctor if you experience a change in odor, have extreme or unusual pain, or have more severe period symptoms than usual (such as a heavier flow or longer period).

5 FACTS ABOUT THE HUMAN EGG CELLS

1) You are born with all your egg cells.
Did you know that every woman is born with all her eggs already inside her ovaries? You can have as many as seven million eggs in your ovaries when you are born and these will be released every menstrual cycle throughout your fertile lifetime.

2) The quality of human eggs gets worse Over time...
As you get older, same as your cells and the female egg cell is no exception. Although women are born with millions of eggs, the quality of these goes down over time. Many die off before you even hit puberty, meaning you will be left with around 700,000 egg cells by the time menstruation begins.

3) An egg cell is released every cycle...
Most women release an egg cell every cycle , this is called ovulation. Some women can release two eggs cells per cycle, this can result in the conception of fraternal twins. Identical twins are made when the ferilized egg cell divides in two.

4) The female egg cell has a short life after ovulation..
Once ovulation has happened, the famale egg cell that's released begins to deteriorate and the fertile window starts closing. After 12-24 hours the cell dies and getting pregnant again in the same cycle becomes almost impossible.

5) The female egg cell is bigger than you think.
Most cells aren't visible to the naked eye: you need a microscope to see them. The humans egg cell is an exception, it's actually the biggest cell in the body and can be seen without a microscope.

A baby goes through several stages of development, beginning as a fertilized egg. The egg develops into a blastocyst, an embryo, then a fetus.
