LASPA Urges Hospitality Sector to Comply with Lagos Parking Policy
The General Manager, Lagos State Parking Authority, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu has called on stakeholders in the hospitality industry to comply with the Lagos state parking policy and make adequate arrangements to meet their Customers' Parking needs.
Adelabu made this call on Thursday while speaking as a panelist at the engagement session organized by Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for stakeholders in the hospitality sector on current industry challenges, emerging trends, Policy frameworks and collaborative opportunities within the entire hospitality value chain at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island.
She stressed that it is the duty of those who own and operate facilities such as hotels, bars and other events centres to make adequate provision for parking for their customers/clients. “If you have an event centre, hotel or restaurant, ideally you should make sure you have enough parking” she said.
In addition, the General Manager explained that LASPA is not quick to take punitive measures, but rather seeks voluntary compliance from Lagosians, saying that the Authority usually explore all available options to sensitize the public before commencement of any enforcement exercise.
“We as an agency are not here to disrupt your businesss, what we ask is that you don’t make your businesses an infringement to the rights of others, ensure you comply with the dictates of the Lagos State parking Policy”, she stated.
Adelabu urged event centers to ensure ample parking provision for their guests right from the outset of constructing their facilities. She emphasized that according to the law, anyone planning to build a structure for social gatherings must conduct a traffic impact assessment prior to construction, and the approved designs must be strictly followed.
“When you are building a structure like an event centre you require the traffic impact assessment, which will definitely go through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and Ministry of Transport before an approval is issued. However oftentimes people build something different from what they submitted, this should not continue” she stressed.
Moreover, the General Manager stated that the government acknowledges the parking requirements of certain existing event centers and corporate entities grappling with inadequate parking spaces, assuring that the Authority is prepared to aid them in establishing alternative arrangements whenever necessary.
“Should you require additional parking spaces around your businesses, please reach out to us, we will check with other nearby facilities who don’t use their spaces at that particular period to accommodate your needs, the Authority can also provide you parking marshal for special events” she opined.
The General Manager mentioned that one of the goals of the agency is to make all Lagosian aware of their parking responsibilities. “before you leave your house, ensure you check if it is compulsory to go out with your car, and if you need to, you have to consider where to park your car, check if there are available parking in that space, how much it costs to park and then factor that into your movement plans." the General Manager advised.
Adelabu affirmed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration is making significant investments in an intermodal transport system to reduce reliance on car travel.
She noted that Lagosians now have access to trains and boats as well as options like LAGRIDE or the first and last mile buses to complete their journeys.
“You have a variety of transportation options available in Lagos now. Rather than driving around searching for parking, you can take advantage of trains or BRT buses. Furthermore, you can opt for LAGRIDE or first and last-mile buses to reach your destination after getting off the train or ferry,” she pointed out.
The General manager also appealed to corporate entities, car park operators, and others in the sector to comply with the parking policy and ensure timely payment of their rates to avoid enforcement measures. She also called on all Lagosians to adhere to the Lagos State Parking Policy and cooperate with LASPA to keep our roads clear of illegal parking.
The General Manager reiterated LASPA's commitment to addressing all parking-related issues, ensuring that residents and visitors of Lagos State enjoy optimal parking experiences. Hence, anyone with parking related issues should please contact LASPA on 02-01-2275230, 02-01-2275231 or visit our website [http://www.laspa.lg.gov.ng]

PRESS RELEASE
“FESTIVE SEASON: LASPA EMBARKS ON GRASSROOT ADVOCACY
…Warns against operation of illegal car parks
As part of the efforts to tackle indiscriminate parking during this festive season and beyond, Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has intensified its advocacy campaign across various CDC/CDAs to enlighten residents on the negative impact of indiscriminate parking on streets and major roads.
The weeklong motorised campaign scheduled to hold at some LGAs/LCDAs kicked off on Monday at the Authority’s office at 36b Sasegbon Street, GRA Ikeja with the theme “LASPA says NO to indiscriminate parking”.
The General Manager of LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu said that the motorised campaign is a collaborative effort with Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy and some of the CDC/CDA leaders through the Ministry of Local Government, and Community Affairs and to further sensitize lagosians at all level on compliance with the Lagos State Parking Policy.
Adelaabu stressed that indiscriminate parking amongst other parking violations and offences is one of the major contributors to traffic congestion across the state, hence the need to intensify senstization campain especially during the festive season.
“we are calling on Lagosians at all levels to comply with Lagos State Parking Policy, and work with LASPA to ensure our roads are free of illegal parking this season, so we can put an end to indiscriminate parking in our beloved state. Indiscriminate parking is dangerous and unlawful, and it worsens traffic conditions on our roads, she said.
Adelabu enjoined corporate entities to comply with the Lagos State Parking Policy and make parking provisions for their clients and customers in order to avoid running foul of relevant laws.
“There will be enforcement of parking laws across the state in order to ensure the roads are clear and safe for use, so be compliant with the parking laws of the state” she stressed.
The General manager assured that all events centres and other corporate entities with insufficient parking spaces, can reach LASPA for alternative arrangements.
“we offer parking marshals during the “ember”months, so if you need help let us know. Also, if you need extra space for packing around your businesses, let us know, we can talk to other businesses who don’t use their spaces at that particular period to accommodate your needs”.
“You are not allowed to use the roads and setbacks for parking without permission, it is against the law. She stressed”.
Adelabu also warned against the use of unapproved public spaces and roads for car parks by unauthorized persons, adding that Lagos State will clamp down on all operators of illegal car parks around the state as LASPA is the only parking regulatory agency of the state.
She stated that the Authority had gone around the state to map out roads that are suitable for on-street parking and had gone ahead to lane-mark and installed signages on most of the roads to facilitate the on-street parking process.
She enjoined anyone with Parking related issues across the state to reach LASPA on 012275230, 012275231 or visit our website [www.laspa.lg.gov.ng]
