News: General Average Declared for Dali Vessel After Collision with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The Mediterranean Shipping Company has announced that 'General Average' (GA) has been declared for the Dali vessel following its recent collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
๐Understanding General Average:
General Average is a crucial maritime principle invoked when a vessel sustains damage or incurs substantial expenses for the common safety of both cargo and vessel during a voyage. In such cases, all parties sharing the vessel's cargo may be proportionally liable for the financial losses incurred.
โWhat Happens Next?
With GA now declared, the ship owner will assess the total cost of the extraordinary measures taken and distribute it among all cargo owners based on the value of their goods. This could pose a significant financial challenge to shippers, particularly those without adequate GA insurance coverage.
๐ขThe Importance of Marine Insurance:
This tragic incident underscores the critical role of marine insurance in safeguarding cargo. Proper insurance coverage can mitigate financial risks and provide peace of mind to shippers in unpredictable situations like this.

The cargo ship Dali, which recently collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing significant damage and resulting in vehicles and individuals plunging into the water, had previously been detained in Belgium in 2016 after a mishap at the port of Antwerp. During its departure from Antwerp's container terminal bound for Bremerhaven, the Dali, a substantial vessel measuring 948 feet (290 meters) with the capacity to carry 10,000 containers, experienced a maneuvering error. The misjudgment led to the vessel's stern scraping against the quay, inflicting considerable damage to several meters of its hull.
Authorities detained the ship subsequently, docking it at Deurganckdok, Belgium, with reports indicating no injuries or environmental pollution resulted from the incident. The weather conditions were favorable at the time, and the fault was attributed to the shipโs master and the pilot onboard.
The ship, constructed in South Korea in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is owned by the Greek company Oceanbulk Maritime and was under a charter by Maersk at the time of the incident. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed the Dali's registration in Singapore, carrying 22 crew members, all of whom were Indian nationals, though not directly employed by Maersk. The vessel is operated by the charter company Synergy Group.
This collision led to the collapse of about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of the Baltimore bridge, triggering an urgent search and rescue operation for at least seven individuals, with two being rescued, one in critical condition. The incident has prompted scrutiny into the vessel's past and operational protocols.

Fourth party logistics, also known as 4PL, is a model where the business owner outsources its supply chain and logistics to an external service provider. This provider is responsible for the assessing, designing, planning, building, running, and even tracking an integrated comprehensive supply chain solution on the behalf of the firm. They are also called lead logistics providers. The external provider can either have his own warehouse or tie up with warehouse companies. Therefore, fourth party logistics represents a higher level of supply chain management for the client.
Increase in demand for an easy & effective supply chain system and increase in the complexities in the operation process drive the growth of the fourth party logistics market. In addition, rise in demand for customized solutions is also expected to drive the market growth. However, factors such as reluctance of companies to outsource the logistics function and changes in logistics regulations in different countries are expected to hinder the growth of the market. Further, increase in demand for consumer electronics and growth in the e-commerce market are factors that are anticipated to foster the market growth.
Smart and innovative IT solutions have developed the logistics industry and transformed the future of business. Thus, with growing expectations, several warehouse management software providers have started to take on a role as 4PL providers as well. Moreover, the adoption of web integration or information systems as a primary coordinator in the supply chain helps organizations to focus on leaner production and inventory management. The customized 4PL supply chain solutions are connected with warehouse management, revenue & expense management, process automation, freight tracking, customer relationship management, and supplier tracking systems.
๐๐๐ซ๐ค๐๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ - The global fourth party logistics (4PL) market was valued at $57.9 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach $111.7 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.7% from 2022 to 2031.

LEKKI DEEP SEAPORT BERTHS LARGEST CONTAINER VESSEL ON NIGERIAN WATERS
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has taken trade facilitation a notch higher with the berthing at the Lekki Deep Seaport of the largest container carrier to sail on Nigerian territorial waters on Sunday 21st January, 2024.
The vessel measuring 367M in length over all christened โMaersk Edirneโ has a Breadth of 48.2 and carried a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131metric tonnes and a Dead weight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes, constituting 3,376 total cargo onboard was navigated to safety by the highly experienced and thoroughly equipped Pilots of the NPA.
This development validates the assurances given by the Managing Director / CEO Nigerian Ports Authority, Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko during the signing of the Presidential / Ministerial Performance Bond in December 2023, that โthe Authority under my watch is poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximize the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economyโ.
Responding to the milestone achievement on Sunday, Bello Koko commended the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola for the consistent support and endorsement of the Authorityโs initiatives and investments in employee upskilling and equipment renewal which made this milestone seamlessly achievable.
Before this time, the largest commercial vessels to sail on Nigerian waters were โMV Stadelhornโ and โMSC Maureenโ at Onne Port and TinCan Island Port Complexes respectively. Thus the berthing of a ship of measuring 367 meters at Lekki Deep Seaport represents a quantum leap forward.
The Lekki Deep Seaport has by this feat in addition to its pioneering of full automation and facilitation of transhippment proven its readiness to exceed stakeholdersโ expectations.
In the logistics world, the hustle never rests. It's a 24/7 symphony of challenges and solutions. Passion fuels our journeyโit's not just a job; it's an exhilarating expedition. ๐โ๏ธ

Luxury cruise liner Norwegian Dawn calls the Port of Mombasa early Sunday morning, carrying 2300 passengers and 1100 crew aboard, becoming the first cruise vessel of the year to dock in Mombasa.
Sailing to Mombasa from Seychelles, Norwegian Dawn, with an LOA of 294 meters brought the over 2000 passengers from 54 nationalities to the Kenyan coast for excursions, to explore the pristine white sandy beaches and national parks.
Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto who piloted the vessel to berth number one, appreciated the call reiterating KPAโs support for cruise tourism in the country through investment in infrastructure to position the Port of Mombasa as a cruise tourism hub.
Chairman Hon. Benjamin Tayari welcomed the call noting the visit is an affirmation of Kenya as a tourism hub in Africa.
The maiden call to Mombasa comes a few days after another cargo vessel docked at the port on maiden voyage. Last year December, the port once again received MV Bollete, a cruise liner with over 900 passengers, with Captain Ruto confirming that the Port of Mombasa will receive another cruise ship next month.
๐ข Ship Shortage Alert! ๐ Electric vehicle exports from China to Europe are facing major delays due to a critical shortage of car-carrying ships. Korea Marine Transport Container (KMTC) Shipping Line has deployed its first ever vessel to the African continent choosing the Port of Mombasa as the first port of Call.
MV KMTC Hochmihn made a maiden call Thursday with 1000 TEUs for the local and transit market, affirming the strategic position of the port as shipping and maritime hub and a preferred port of call for shipping lines.
The call also signals the growth of the region and the country as the traffic in cargo volumes increases.
General Manager of Rais Shipping Services; the agents for KMTC Mr. Mayur Udyawar noted that the shipping line chose Kenya as the gateway through Africa as it looks to expand its operations and business in the continent.
KPA has welcomed this development as an affirmation of the consistent initiatives to improve capacity and efficiency at the port.
When shipping lines come it means traffic is growing and the Port has enough resources to serve the growing demand.
KPA leadership of Chairman Benjamin Dalu Tayari and Captain William Ruto received the vessel, noting that new shipping lines commencing operations denotes improved efficiency and service delivery.
Iranian forces seize Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker St Nikolas in the Gulf of Oman, near the Omani port of Sohar.
The vessel was boarded by masked, armed individuals who redirected it to an Iranian port.
The seizure is a reaction to the United States' earlier confiscation of the tanker and its oil cargo.
Managed by Empire Navigation, St Nikolas was traveling from Basra, Iraq, to Turkey, loaded with 145,000 tonnes of crude oil.
The crew comprises 18 Filipinos and one Greek citizen.
Post-boarding, UK Maritime Trade Operations reports lost communication with the vessel, boarded by people in military-style attire.
Iranian state media labels the vessel as American, despite its Greek ownership.
The St Nikolas, formerly known as Suez Rajan, was previously seized by the US for sanction enforcement against Iran.
The ship's former charterer, Suez Rajan Limited, confessed to breaching sanctions by illicitly trading and transporting Iranian oil.
The US has called for the immediate release of the tanker and its crew, highlighting the event's detrimental impact on international commerce and regional stability.

Air freight is a transportation mode of delivering fast-speed shipments via aircraft mostly for longer distances. Air freight contributes to the global economic development as the global economy relies on the capability to transport valuable and superior quality products rapidly to consumers across the world. Attributed to fast delivery speeds and temperature-sensitive space in aircraft, vaccines are usually sent via aircraft to help reach their required destination in time to be effective. According to the World Health Organization, vaccinations programs help prevent around 3 million child deaths annually. Air freight plays a crucial in delivering temperature-sensitive medications in the best conditions by means of state-of-the-art procedures and technologies.
The air freight business is experiencing a transformation in technology and is evolving from an excessive usage of old mainframe systems to more adaptable interfaces employed for processes such as flight operations, revenue accounting, networking planning, and others. Moreover, the rising usage of cool-chain tech, robotics, automated systems, artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, deep learning, IoT, and augmented & virtual reality across several operations is anticipated to boost the growth of the global air freight market over the forecast period.
The delivery of items via cargo planes is the fastest way among other modes of transportation. While other modes of transportation, for instance, shipping, rail or road transport, usually take days or weeks to deliver the items, air transport makes the delivery of items in just a few hours. Attributed to the presence of lesser stock to unload in comparison with cargo ships, the customs clearance is quick and the requirement for local warehousing is much lesser. Moreover, air freight is the safest among all other modes as goods sent via air go through least handling and the safety controls at airports are strictly managed.

Multimodal transportation is the backbone of international trade here the goods are transported under a single contract but performed with at least two different modes of transport. The carrier or multimodal transport operator (MTO) is liable for the entire carriage, even though it is performed by several different modes of transport by rail, sea, and road. Multimodal transport is a solution to solve bigger part of cargo mobility problems. Its main feature is the transhipment terminals which allows efficient cargo handling between short distance & long-distance traffic as well as application of standardized & reusable loading units.
Furthermore, the advantage multimodal transport is that it uses the most efficient combination of transport modes for carrying the cargo. The service is more environmentally sustainable than some single mode transport methods since, it reduces the hassle of dealing with multiple partners for transportation of cargo. In addition, multimodal transport uses one transport bill of lading for its services and operation and optimizes lead times, reduces inventory costs, and regulates freight level costs.
E-commerce plays very key role in offering freight customers new options to boost their economic growth. Since, multimodal transportation uses two different of modes of transport thus, it is useful for long distance shipment. The rise in in e-commerce industry has enabled the consumers to purchase goods from all across the world. For instance, global e-commerce sales jumped to $26.7 trillion in 2019, up by 4% from 2018. Moreover, internet-based retailing and online shopping is witnessing a significant expansion in majority of countries across the globe, owing to an increase in speedy internet access, which has led to rising preference toward e-commerce among consumers.

Retail logistics refers to the process of managing and coordinating the movement of goods, materials, and products from suppliers to the final consumers in the retail industry. It involves various activities such as procurement, transportation, inventory management, warehousing, order fulfillment, and distribution, all aimed at ensuring that the right products are available in the right quantities at the right locations and at the right time to meet customer demands. This involves the planning and coordination of activities across the entire supply chain, from raw material suppliers to manufacturers to distributors to retailers and ultimately to consumers.
The widespread adoption of online shopping and the continuous growth of e-commerce platforms have led to a surge in demand for retail logistics services. As consumers increasingly prefer shopping online due to its convenience and broader product selection, the pressure on logistics providers to handle these orders efficiently and swiftly has intensified. Retailers and logistics companies need to meet these expectations to retain customer loyalty.
Real-time tracking or demand forecasting and inventory optimization technologies have become vital tools for retailers to ensure they have the right products in stock and ready for shipping. E-commerce allows businesses to reach a global customer base. As companies expand their operations internationally, logistics becomes even more complex due to cross-border shipping, varying regulations, and different customer expectations.
The retail logistics is segmented on the basis of type, solution, mode of transport, and region. By type, the market is divided into conventional retail logistics and e-commerce retail logistics.
