Live updates: Presidential and National Assembly Elections, Results:

February 26, 2023

Welcome. On Saturday 25th February, millions of Nigerians trooped out to elect the next President and National Assembly members. It is the seventh consecutive general election in this Fourth Republic, starting from 1999.

While results are trickling in, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has not only suspended elections in some areas till tomorrow, Sunday, but also postponed collation to same day.
We are bringing you live updates of the elections, as they are concluded, and the results as INEC releases them.

Mr Peter Obi, an Igbo and former Governor of Anambra State, is the flag bearer of the resurgent Labour Party, LP.
One of the main contenders is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, a Yoruba, who had served for two terms as the Governor of Lagos State. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, another political force in the election is a Fulani like the outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari. He is flying the flag of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

This is reminiscent of the geo-political parallel in the country’s presidential election when Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Igbo) of the Nigerian People’s Party, NPP, squared up against Chief Obafemi Awolowo (Yoruba) of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, and Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Hausa/Fulani of the National Party of Nigeria, NPN; and for the keenly contested 1979 polls which Shagari eventually won.

However, political analysts have talked of a three-horse presidential race with no certainty on who will likely be the country’s next president after the incumbent.

But it will be wrong to ignore Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, who is a force and arguably makes it a four-horse race.

CBN proposes eNaira for $800m cash transfer scheme

24th February 2023

In an effort to drive a cashless economy, the Central Bank of Nigeria has suggested the use of eNaira for cash transfers during the National Social Safety Net Programme Scale Up.

This was according to the National FinTech Strategy document obtained from the website of the CBN.

The strategy document was created by the National Financial Inclusion Steering Committee, chaired by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The document revealed that the eNaira can be pre-programmed for payments to the poor and vulnerable on the social register.

It read, “The central bank can use a pre-programmed eNaira to pay intended beneficiaries on the social register, which could be accepted only for a specific purpose and at specifically authorised locations.

“This use case will ensure the proper use of social funds, ensure high-quality data can be collected on the performance of these programs, and help to prevent leakage or diversion of funds. This capability could be extended to other use cases in financial services and related ecosystems, where there exists a priority to maintain the integrity of funds and the purpose for which it is used.”

The CBN launched its Central Bank Digital Currency, eNaira, on October 25, 2021, to drive financial inclusion, payments systems efficiency improvements covering remittances and social intervention, and revenue and tax collections.

Insecurity: Buhari Engages Religious Leaders, Seeks Partnership

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged religious leaders to act on the growing numbers of violent non-state actors.

President Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at the formal opening of the 4th General/Plenary Assembly of the Reunion of Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA).

At the event, which was themed ‘Fratelli Tutti: Path to Build Brotherhood and Sustainable Peace in West Africa’, President Buhari said some non-state actors were propagating genuine causes but with mindless violence, which often led to the destruction of lives and property.

Speaking with Christian leaders, he said, “So, the role of the church in this enterprise is settled. Indeed, the Catholic Church and the Bishops conference have established a reputation for speaking truth to power in consonance with the highest prophetic traditions and by continuing its illustrious practice of inspiring social action by the lay faithful.

“Over the years, the Church has modelled profound approaches in challenging the impunity of some state actors and errant power. But my Lords, I believe the times also call for speaking to the growing numbers of violent non-state actors, some propagating genuine causes but with mindless violence often leading to the destruction of lives and property.”

According to him, the conference can also supply a moral and spiritual consensus that undergirds the project of integration, which, by doing so, can make everyone can also look to the idea of the common good.

ORPHANS: We’re dying of starvation, Akwa Ibom orphanage home cries out...😭

The Shalom Community Orphanage Home located at Ikpa Town in the Esit-Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has appealed to government agencies and public spirited organisations to come to its aid, saying the children are starving.

The 14 years old orphanage, popularly called James 1:27, orphanage was established on January 15, 2008, and currently housed about 50 children.

The proprietor of the home, Bishop Evan Udoeakisong, in a statement made available to our correspondent in Uyo, on Tuesday, lamented that the current hardship being experienced in the society has worsened the condition of the children in the home as their personal income could no longer sustain them.

While expressing his appreciation to government agencies and individuals for their visits, which he said “have gone a long way to sustain the inmates,” he said with the current challenges, the home was in dire need of food, clothing, medical care and education support for the children.

“The development and welfare of the children are also dependent on the good people to some extent who make donations of their time and money. The home would not have existed without donations.

“A number of children would have been forced to live miserable lives in foster homes or in the streets. Nothing can be sadder than a child living in abusive and squalid conditions.

“No child of this home has ever been abused, maltreated or defiled because the orphanage is managed by true Christians,’ Bishop Udoekaisong said.

Gunmen kill 10 persons, injure 19 during cultural festival in Plateau .......................................................................................................
Gunmen have killed 10 persons and injured 19 others during a cultural festival in Chando Zerreci community in Irigwe Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau.........................................................................................................
Mr. Lawrence Zango, the National Publicity Secretary, Irigwe Youth Movement, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Jos.

Zango said that criminals launched the attack on Saturday night during the annual ritual festival of ‘Zerreci’, which usually ushers them into the new farming season.

Zongo, who condemned and described that act as ”sad and unfortunate”, added that the injured are currently receiving treatment at Enos Hospital Miango.

He called on the government at all levels and the security agencies to find lasting solution to the incessant attacks that usually lead to loss of lives and property.

"The government has a responsibility to promote and protect human rights, including the right to life, and a duty to protect civilians from attacks by taking effective measures to prevent and deter attacks on our people.”

“The government must as a matter of urgency investigate the attack in Irigwe land and bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that families and other victims are adequately compensated

“Brutal attacks on our communities are becoming rampant and frequent and this is unacceptable.

”Government must take more concrete steps to protect lives and property across Iregwe chiefdom and neighboring communities,” he said.

Zango also appealed to the International community to come to the aid of the people and to support them and address the huge humanitarian challenges caused by the attacks.

ASP Ubah Ogaba, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Police command in the state, confirmed the attack, adding that the command had mobilised armed officers to the place to restore normalcy.

He called on residents of the area and Plateau in general to remain calm and law abiding, adding that security agencies are working seriously to ensure their safety.

Electoral Act: Amaechi, Fashola, Ngige get concessions to vote at APC convention

26 March 2022

The All Progressives Congress would be making special concessions for serving political appointees who previously held elective office to vote at its national convention, The PUNCH has learnt.

Such persons include a former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, who is also a former governor of Anambra State; a former governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola and Minister of Works and Housing; and a few others.

Governor Sule said they would be given concessions because the APC Constitution makes them statutory delegates.

He said, “Our delegates’ lists are statutory delegates. So if you have a former president as a political appointee, if you have a former senator as a political appointee, these are already automatic delegates.

“Let’s not confuse the two just because being an appointee doesn’t necessarily take you out of being a delegate, because our delegates are classified clearly. Former presidents from our party, former elected personalities, party officials and the rest are delegates.

“So if you are talking of the ones we have submitted now, we don’t have commissioners, we don’t have advisers, we don’t have all those unless somebody particularly who was a former this or former that. In that case, just being an appointee doesn’t completely exclude such a person from being a delegate.”

But speaking on the Channels TV programme, Sule said some ministers, including the one from his state, had been excluded from being delegates. He, however, did not say if this would affect his earlier position.

The APC on Thursday barred political appointees from taking part in its national convention or primaries due to the controversy surrounding Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, which bars political appointees from voting at party congresses.

A Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, ruled last week that the section was null and void because it was at variance with the constitution, the National Assembly had vowed to appeal the judgment.

Proposed census data won’t be disputed –NPC commissioner

The Commissioner, National Population Commission, representing Cross River State, Navy Captain Charles Ogwa (retd.), says the proposed population and housing census will produce data that will not be disputed.

This, he said, was because the data collection that started with the enumeration area demarcation had been digitalised by the commission.

Ogwa gave the assurance on Friday in Calabar while addressing journalists on the ongoing enumeration area demarcation involving five local government areas in the state, namely Bekwarra, Obudu, Ogoja, Ikom, and Etung.

“Unlike in the past when data collection was manually done, the present exercise is digital. Once information is received from a particular person or household, it is stringed to local government, the state, zonal and headquarters of the commission’s database,” he said.

He advised Nigerians to disabuse their minds of fear that the proposed population and housing census would clash with the 2023 general elections.

News Update:
FG shuts illegal online banks, freezes business accounts.

The Federal Competition Consumer Protection Commission, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, National Information Technology Development Agency, and the Nigerian Police Force, on Friday, raided some illegal financial institutions operating on Opebi Road, Ikeja, Lagos.

Among the financial institutions affected were, GoCash, Okash, EasyCredit, Kashkash, Speedy Choice, Easy Moni.

The raid, the FCCPC said, was in response to customers’ complaints of malpractices by the financial institutions.

Speaking during the raid, the Chief Executive Officer, FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, explained that customers had accused the financial institutions of violating their privacy in their debt recovery drive.

He said the agency had begun investigations into the allegations since 2020.

He said, “This information started quite a while ago. Some time ago, when the country was on lockdown in 2020 due to the pandemic, we started seeing the rise in money lenders”

“Because there was lockdown due to the pandemic, people needed small easy loan which is understandable. But over a period of time, people started complaining about the malpractices of the lenders, so we started tracking it”

2023: Some presidential aspirants should be in jail if EFCC did its job – Obasanjo
the ex-President and strongman of Hilltop Towers also said though many presidential hopefuls have visited him to solicit support for their tall ambition, he has not endorsed any aspirant for the much-exalted seat in A*o Rock.

‘I’m not sponsoring any southern candidate’
He said, “As the quadrennial madness builds a head of steam and the runners and riders crisscross the nation in the quest for nomination as the party flag bearer to the highest office in the land, I read and hear about endorsement and statements in support of candidates that I frankly have not made and forming next political parties that I can never get involved in. I was told that social media credited to me the names of three people from the south that I am sponsoring for Presidency in 2023.

“My friend, Professor Ango Abdullah, who brought this to my knowledge remarked that he did not believe that I made such a statement because it was out of my character. I have neither named names nor stated my position. In a situation like the one we are in, I will not rush into naming names without necessary consultations and well-defined principles and criteria. We need to be clear about what Nigeria needs today and why Nigeria needs it. Only then can we answer the question of how that will inform us of the criteria and characteristics for determining who.”

Continuing, the celebrant said some 2023 presidential aspirants should be in jail had the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission done their jobs effectively.

Obasanjo said, “Since 1999, we have changed from one political party or another we have manoeuvred and manipulated to the point that election results are no longer reflections of the will of the people and we seemed to be progressively going back rather than going forward politically, economically and socially.
