May Drag FG to Court

The Academic Staff Union of Universities may drag the Federal Government over its members’ eight months’ withheld salaries.

ASUU will resort to the court, it was learnt, once the government goes ahead to pay members of the parallel union, the Congress of Nigerian University Academics.

Counsel for ASUU, Femi Falana, disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday.

We had reported that the FG, through the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, is set to pay the withheld salaries and allowances of lecturers under the aegis of CONUA.

This was contained in a memo addressed to the President, CONUA, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, by the Director, Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Charles Wali.

We had also reported how the government withheld the salaries of Nigerian lecturers during the eight-month strike by ASUU.

During the strike, the government also registered CONUA as a trade union.

In an earlier interview with The PUNCH, Sunmonu had said that members of his union did not embark on strike and hence should not have their salaries withheld.

When asked for his reaction to the plan by the FG to pay CONUA members and leave out ASUU, Falana said, “We want them to pay the (CONUA) money. That is why we have not reacted.

“That (the payment) will form the legal basis for the government to now pay ASUU. We will now have the legal grounds to challenge them in a court of law. Through that, ASUU will be paid. They won’t have a choice. Let them go ahead.”

The National President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

Good Morning My Fellow Comrade. I salute us for the courage and perseverance all along. It has not being easy with academics in Nigerian public Universities especially in with Federal Universities experiencing Salary stoppage and attempts by management of state Universities to forcefully re-opening.

All shall be well, it is just a matter of time. The battle between FG and our union is at its peak. The antics of court ruling and plot to proscribe the union all failed, because we are fighting genuine and just course to salvage Nigerian Public Universities.

Comrades, Nothing good comes ease. What we are enjoying today are sacrifices of others before us. Now, it is our turn to sacrifice for the future generation. The situation we find our selves today i.e ( strike) happened in Ghana and it took Ghanian Lecturers one year to get it right, although we don't pray for that. Comrades, this is our struggle and no body can do it for us.

The dichotomy of State and Federal Universities should not deceive us. University is universal. Comrades, Our resolve to remain on this struggle is not debatable because the benefit is enomous and for us to achieve that we must be united and resolute to speak with one voice.

Comrades, this strike is the mother of all strikes, because it is an attempt to change the fortune of Lecturers and students.

Thats why ASUU has detractors in government and within ASUU members. But no matter their number, people united can never be defeated. Comrades, l urge us to remain focus , united and resolute , by the grace of Almighty God we shall succeed.

This court referral is a testimony to that. It shall also come to pass like many other huddles. Struggle Continues...

Our Protést over ASUU Strike will be wórsë than - says NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to stage a massive protest in the South south that will be worse than if the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) lingers.

NANS said it will make good its threat to crïpple the economy if the Federal Government f@ils to return lecturers to the classrooms.

Addressing a briefing in Uyo over the weekend, the South-South Coordinator, NANS ZONE B, Comrade Kings Tamarapreye, said the association will stop at nothing till students return to their various schools.

Tamarapreye, who threateñed that the next lines of actions by the students may be ‘worsë than the EndSARS protest, vowed the entire country will be sh.ut dowñ.

ASUU Begs A’Court to Stay Judgement Ordering End of Strike!
The striking members of the (ASUU), yesterday approached the Court of Appeal, Abuja for an order to stay the ex*****on of a court judgement ordering it to end its ongoing nationwide strike.The university teachers have been on strike since February 14, to press home their demands for improved funding for universities and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
Justice Polycarp Hamman of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Abuja Division, had on Wednesday, while delivering ruling in an interlocutory injunction application by the federal government, restrained ASUU from continuing with the strike.
The judge had predicated his decision on Section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act, that empowers him to make such decisions in the interest of the nation.Dissatisfied, the university lecturers yesterday filed a Notice of Appeal to challenge the order of the Industrial Court.ASUU through its lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, had in a motion sought the leave of the court “to appeal against the interlocutory ruling of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria per Honourable Justice P.1. Hamman.”The appellant also prayed the court for another order, “staying ex*****on of the order of Justice Hamman … pending the hearing and determination of the interlocutory Appeal.”
ASUU is claiming that the ruling of Justice Hamman affects its fundamental rights to fair hearing, adding that it would be in the interest of justice to stay the ex*****on of same pending the hearing and determination of the Appeal arising thereto.In the 14 grounds of proposed notice of appeal, ASUU is claiming that the trial Judge “erred in law and thereby occasioned a miscarriage of justice when he decided to hear and determine the Respondents’ motion for interlocutory injunction when he knew or ought to have known that the substantive suit filed by the Claimant was not initiated by due process of law.”

ASUU strike and the premature victory celebration: A short response to an impulsive attack dog.

I read a statement from Lauretta Onochie that "President Buhari will be remembered as the man that stopped incessant strikes in our universities. I don't know whether to cry for Nigeria for the sort of people we have in government or cry for President Buhari for the sort of people that he surrounded himself with. Or better still, on both scores.

I pity the President as her boss. It's a tough job to be employed as an "Attack Dog", especially at her age. An attack dog sees everyone as an enemy except the master that is feeding it with bone. The surprising thing about her level of reasoning is that she studied in a university in the UK and lectured in a College in the UK. You would have expected that her exposure would have influenced her sense of reasoning. On the other hand, you can't be too surprised with the attitude of a person whose brain is driven by the stomach.

Lauretta Onochie got her first degree from a Nigerian university. She then left for the UK where she did a postgraduate program at the University of Greenwich in 2005 that qualified her to teach basic education in the UK. She worked at Epping Forest College as a lecturer for 6 years. She left in 2011 to be a Consultant in a firm. Life is expensive in London and she seems to be in dire need of a good job to sustain her family.

She then realized that politics in Nigeria is one of the most lucrative jobs around the world. So, she left her family in the UK for politics in Nigeria. She was successful and became an aide to the president in 2016. An attempt to make her an INEC commissioner was rejected by a Senate dominated by her party members. Her encounter with the Senate brought out how vividly falsehood has become her headgear.

The Students Union Government (SUG) President of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has said that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will shùt dowñ the country if the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continues.
