Dear All,

It is pertinent to reiterate the essence of the 2020 NIOB Mandatory National Workshop titled, *BUILDING PRODUCTION AND STRUCTURAL STABILITY* . Two primary reasons drive this workshop:

1. Strength of Materials, Structural Mechanics, Structural Analysis and Structural Design are courses under Structures that Building Students must offer and pass in almost all the semesters.

In order to get the right candidates for these critical courses in Structures, Mathematics, Additional (Further) Mathematics, Physics and Technical Drawing are part of the O' Level / WASC requirements for Building Students as stipulated in Clause 5.5.8.ii of the NIOB Constitution.

Therefore, with his/her good understanding of structural analysis in building, a Builder as the Production Manager on site should be able to discover any issues of legitimate concern in the structural drawings and notify the Structural Engineer accordingly in a cordial and mutually self- respecting atmosphere, all with an eye on the goal and basic responsibilities of both parties at preventing building collapse.

2. This workshop on Building Structures, if well publicised by all our members will help debunk the deliberate campaign of calumny by detractors that Builders are not well grounded in Structures. The Civil Engineer was trained to understand structural analysis in civil works while the Builders received training to understand structural analysis in building works. Of course, the role of the Structural Engineer at the design stage remains valid.

A Builder by training, therefore, is not a tyro or novice in Building Structures.There is a need for strong advocacy to change this misconception among uninformed professional colleagues, public office holders, administrators and developers.

A true professional must not accept any relegation in the area of his/her core competence. Builders must rise and display their knowledge in Building Structures courageously.

Both old and young Builders, Builders in public and private sectors should be part of this essential workshop.

It is time to make the big statement that Builders possess competence in Structures, especially in that of building.
