Business is essential to the economy of society. A single business entity can stand for and serve one or many purposes within the society. It can assume many roles with attendant expectations to each. In its plainest form, a firm or business can see itself as a service provider or maker of great products existing to create value for its shareholders, but to its community of stakeholders the view of its role in society can be a complex maze of interests and expectations that business leaders and managers need to understand to operate successfully. Business organisations are separate from the individual(s) who set up the business. Whilst this is true, it is important the business reflects the owner’s personal ethos and has a strong identity that employees and customers can identify with. Business identity with a strong leaning towards ethics plays an important role in positive stakeholders’ perception of the business and ultimately determines its success or otherwise. The Humanistic Management Network (HMN) knowledge café will dwell on how to go about developing a strong ethical identity, harnessing its benefits, and overcoming possible challenges.

As organisations shift to remote or hybrid work, it is important that they understand the effect it could have on their staff and consequently, their business.

Experts assert new and dynamic work models constitute the future of work. However, the new models, especially full or blended work-from-home, have brought novel workplace challenges to the fore. Prominent among these are the gaps in translation of the organisation’s values and its culture, and in effect employee engagement.

The question is, does remote work harm staff engagement and therefore organisational values and culture?

Presently in Nigeria, standards of living are at an all time low!

Electricity bills keeps skyrocketing!

Fuel pump price is unstable!

Food prices are outrageous!

Yet, workers' wages are not commensurate with this rise!

Do you find yourself asking - ‘what exactly is the problem? Why can’t we get it right? Why does the National Assembly want to remove the minimum wage from the exclusive list? Why are we still fighting for minimum wages, when the rest of the world has realized the essentiality of the ‘Living wage’?

If you answered YES, then this session is for you! Join Dr. Timothy Olawale, Director of the Nigeria Employer Consultative Association at the Inaugural Pan African Event of the Humanistic Management Network as he alongside Dr. Ines Meyer and Dr. Bradwell Mhonderwa as they shed light on these issues.

It promises to be very enlightening. Don’t miss it👍🏾

In Africa, 85% of the population live below 6 dollars a day. This is way below globally accepted minimum wages and has led to significant brain drain on the continent.

Next month, on June 15 the Nigeria chapter of the Humanistic Management Network, in conjunction with the South Africa and Zimbabwe chapter will be hosting the Network's Maiden Pan-African Event to probe possible approaches to attaining living wage in Africa.

The Director of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA), Dr. Timothy Olawale, Executive Director of Ethics Institute, Zimbabwe, Bradwell Mhonderwa, and Associate Professor, Dr. Ines Meyer will explore discussions along these lines - What are the challenges to attaining set minimum wages in African countries, and what do they portend for the goal of a living wage? How has corruption on the continent contributed to the inability to maintain living wages, and how can ethics help to mitigate corruption? Are there existing policies that support living wages in Africa? Is there any hope of attaining living wages in Africa?

Sensitization on the ills of irregular migration is imperative and needs to be done continuously. It is important to sensitize leaders in the private sector on how to use their offices to reduce stigma on returned migrants; ensure the returnees are reintegrated properly in society through businesses and jobs; as well as contribute to raising awareness on these matters.

Also, as aspiring leaders, we need to be aware of the dangers of irregular migration. This helps us make better and informed choices on any future migratory plans and points us to the right channels of migration.
