Valentine’s Day Safety Tip
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, it’s a day we express love, we share gifts, go on dates and share lovely moments with our loved ones. Whether you plan to celebrate on your own or with someone special, use these tips to give a gift of health to you or someone you love on Valentine’s Day.

-Limit alcohol use
-Eat healthy
-Spread love, not germs: Protect yourself from flu, wash hands often, avoid close contact when you or someone you know is sick
-Be sure to use appropriate safety gear, including seat belts, life vests, and helmets to help prevent injury
-Your valentine may have allergies, asthma, diabetes, or other health conditions. You can be sensitive to your valentine by finding out if certain foods, flowers, pets, or anything else might affect his or her health

We wish you a love filled Valentine's day

Fayo Oluwatoyin Williams interviews Mr Echendu on the Topic 'Journey Management during the festive season" on 96.1Fm

Fatigue is one of the most obvious consequences of poor journey planning and is a major contributing factor in road traffic incidents. A good Journey Management Plan will take into account all the factors that will minimise your chances of feeling sleepy whilst driving.

Simple steps to safety

Consider each element of your journey before you set off:
• Define your route
• Make sure you can stay in communication
• Plan your rest periods and locations
• Think about the timing of your journey and how busy roads will be
• Identify black spots/route hazardous spots
• Consider the route options – different types of roads
• Check the road and weather conditions
• Identify high risk locations such as schools
• Personal welfare – keep hydrated with non-caffeine drinks
• Time your journey and allow extra time to account of unexpected delays

The safest journey is the one not taken!!

Got a headache? Will pop an analgesic. Fever too? An antipyretic will do. Throat ache? Oh, I need an antibiotic. How many times have you heard people doing this? If the answer is often, they could well be getting into a habit of self-medication—like a whole lot of other educated people who feel it is fine to pop a pill without a doctor’s instructions

SELF-medication has always been a part of normal living. One who suffers from any minor disease like flu, fever or headache goes to a medical store, purchases his required medicine and takes it. He does not bother what the side-effects of self-medication are.

Only a qualified doctor is trained to decide when to treat symptoms only, and when to attack the cause. Most people do not consult doctors due to their poor living standard.
They go to a quack who gives medicine or injects them. The quack does not know the proper usages of medicine and its adverse effects.

We are not leading a healthy lifestyle because of lack of exercise, overeating, unsuitable eating, insufficient sleep, excessive smoking and drinking.
People suffer from disorders arising from faulty habits such as these, as well as from unhappy human relationships. Mostly cough syrups, pain killers, ointments, tonics, vitamins, nose-drops and many other similar preparations are found in many households .
Self-medication may cause poisoning.

Rely Commemorates World Malaria Day 2014 with 7 ways to prevent deadly malaria attack
1. Raise awareness at home, work, schools and at leisure. There are several initiatives and campaigns against malaria such as Roll Back Malaria initiative, The UN Foundation's Nothing but Nets etc.
2. Prevent bites: Use insect repellent clothing, sprays, creams and nets effectively. Wear long light coloured sleeves and trousers to prevent bites, install window screens/nets, door nets etc. to prevent deadly vectors like mosquitoes from flying into the house.
3. Take antimalarial medication as prescribed, you might have to set an alarm or a reminder to ensure effective use of medications.
4. Prompt diagnosis and treatment, regular health checks is the road to wellness, and prompt diagnosis helps prevent malaria.
5. Remove all stagnant water, not just waters from the drainage alone. Three stages in mosquitoes life cycles i.e egg, larva, and pupa breed successfully in water
6. Proper and effective house fumigation
7. Always see a nurse or a doctor before traveling to a country where malaria is prevalent.

Malaria affects the development of Africa and it is the Number 1 killer of children in Africa. In 2012, roughly 207 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide resulting in 627,000 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2013, 97 countries had ongoing malaria transmission, placing 3.4 billion people at risk of the disease.

It’s time we tackled this killer disease and have a malaria free country.
It’s our duty, it’s yours to make Africa free!!
