Short history of washing machine.

The very first washing machine was more of a scrub board than a machine. The first washing machine prototype was created in 1797, but it was updated in 1851 to include a drum and a manually operated turner.
The rotary washing machine was invented by Hamilton Smith in 1858.
As a birthday present for his wife, William Blackstone of Indiana created a machine that removed dirt and stains from laundry in 1874. This thoughtful gift would become the first example of convenient washing machines.
The Thor washing machine was the first to use electricity. The Thor was a drum type washing machine with a galvanized tub and an electric motor that was introduced in 1908 by the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois.

Further more on the evolution of the washing machine was the incorporation of a clock timing device, which allowed the machine to be programmed to run for a predetermined length of time during the wash cycle. The operator no longer had to keep a close eye on its every move.
By the early 1950s, many American manufacturers were offering spin-drying machines to replace the wringer, which removed buttons and caused accidents involving hair and hands. GE introduced a washing machine with five push buttons that controlled the wash temperature, rinse temperature, agitation speed, and spin speed in 1957...
