Eagles, going, going,…? - On ‘90 mins with Mathematical’!!!

It was a catastrophe.
Last Monday night Nigerians watched, probably, the most humiliating performance of the Super Eagles ever, losing tamely and haplessly to a team that had only ever won a single match in the last 15 matches between them, a team coached by a foreigner that Nigerians recently ‘sacked’ for lack of results.

It was a massive disaster for Nigerian football as a brand. Even FIFA would silently be rueing the possibility of the absence of the biggest Black nation on earth with her large army of colorful, loud and proud traveling global fans during the 2026 World Cup!

The tragedy is that the Nigerian team did not even fight to win. They ‘gifted’ the match to Benin on a platter. The full implications of that shameful defeat has started to dawn!

Before the matches….
‘Mathematical’ was a champion of an Indigenous coach for the Super Eagles;
Godwin Dudu Rumen was vehemently opposed to the idea. What does he still think?

Idorenyin Uyoe, the global expert on the sports business says that any defeat would be calamitous and huge dent on the global brand.

What do they all think NOW!

There are 6 more matches to be played.
Can Nigeria’s precarious situation be salvaged?

Join Idy, Dudu and I on Saturday morning, at 7:30 am on a new, bigger and better Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM for the deepest Xray yet of Nigerian football and the Super Eagles, in an uncensored conversation without boundaries!

The weak-hearted for facts, the whole facts, and nothing but the facts, should stay away please.

Cyber Security and The Early Warning Systems Centre - Nigeria’s security in focus!

In the past two weeks, a new word has been added to the lexicon of ordinary Nigerians - Cyber Security. The simple interpretation to the layman is that our money in the banks may not be quite as safe and as secure as we all assume. This is serious business!

The President, BAT, halted the implementation of the Cuber Security Levy Policy by the CBN following the storm the news created in the public space. What are the implications?

Beyond cyber security, there are other Security issues that have been of great concern to Nigerians with implications for the West African sub-region in particular.

Then, some good news.

Last year, the ‘General Leo Irabor Early Warning Systems Centre’, was opened.
Strategically, located within the premises of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, it is to provide an additional layer of security in any new security architecture for the country, and to service not only the Nigerian Military establishment but all the security agencies in the country.

Security, generally, is a difficult and complex issue that requires deep forensic interrogation.

Atai Albert, a Nigerian based in Atlanta, USA, is a Digital Transformation and Cybersecurity Consultant. He comes out of the closet of covet operations to illuminate the subjects.

Dr. Godwin Ichimi, a renowned scholar in the field of diplomacy, heads the Centre at the NIIA.

Both men will join me in a light-hearted conversation on both subjects on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’ On Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM.

No one should miss these critically important aspects of our national discourse.

When I wrote recently about the Delborough Lagos, when I visited and experienced the magnificence of the hotel now touted as ‘the best’ in Lagos, a few persons may have thought I was exaggerating.

Now, the evidence is there for all to see.

It was a perfect ‘coup’.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markel, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the royal visitors from the United Kingdom, not only flew into Nigeria last week on the best and fastest growing airline in Africa today, Air Peace, the couple were also ‘spoilt’ in what is becoming the most prestigious and luxurious hotel on the African continent - the Delborough Lagos.

The evidence is in the attached video.

Airpeace and The Delborough Lagos are two of a kind, taking Nigeria to new levels in the travel and hospitality space, key areas in the repositioning of Africa at the table of Civilizations in a new global economic, social and cultural dispensation.

The taste of the pudding is in the eating!
Visit The Delborough Lagos on Bishop Aboyade Cole St, Victoria Island and see for yourself!

Sickle Cell warriors! Extraordinary people!

Prepare to shed some tears of sadness and of joy… this Saturday morning!

Two incredible Nigerian women share personal experiences - from joyful expectations at birth…to nightmares during a life of unbearable pain, endless health crisis, frustration and…now….some succor through the power of enduring love!

Sickle Cell Anaemia is an incurable genetic disorder that can be avoided with little care.
A lady, Rachel Guobadia, through her foundation, is embarking on a ‘journey’ to alleviate the challenges of indigent sufferers, by providing some support and making them ‘Sickle Cell Warriors’. Her own story is simply incredible and inspiring!

This Saturday morning, on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM’s ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’, Rachel and Mojisola, provide a keyhole into that world, providing invaluable information and education for all!

Abeokuta, City below the Rocks - on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’

Abeokuta is a Yoruba city with a very rich and uncommon history, culture, topography and people! It has produced 4 Presidents in Nigeria’s political history since Independence!

Although, only one hour away from bustling Lagos, there cannot be a more different city - laid back, tranquil, safe, sophisticated, and a mostly young population of transiting students!

Abeokuta is a city that is reluctant to abandon its semi-urban feel, its serenity, security and peaceful ambience for so-called development. Taxi drivers refuse to increase their fares. House rents are still some of the lowest in Nigeria.

Three persons (male and female) from the ancient town, join me in the morning to look at the past, the present and the prospects of Abeokuta - what makes the city tick and thrive and to remain ever relevant in Nigeria’s socio-cultural, economic and political landscape.

Aramide Gbadamosi, Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, and Tunde Kelani, join me to scan the city, what distinguishes Abeokuta from the rest in the South West of Nigeria!

From 7:30 am in the morning (Saturday) on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM it will be the heartiest and most informative conversation on the show. It will be streamed to the world on all of the following social media platforms:

A taste of ‘The Delborough’

I am awestruck and speechless.
I am having a unique and dumbfounding experience.

The attached picture speaks.
It is one of several surprises on my first visit this morning to The Delborough in Victoria Island, probably the best hotel in Africa, a combination of class, style, beauty service and luxury.

A red-carpet welcome (valet and all) is laid before me. I am taken round the magnificent facility, my silence saying much more than my limited vocabulary could have done to capture this experience.

As I walk into the lift and, later, into one of the rooms, in both places I am ‘confronted’ with my imposing image on the TV screens welcoming ME to the hotel.

It is a touch of creative genius.

For those with the status and the financial
muscle, it is a place to visit, to experience, to appreciate, to luxuriate in, and then to doff a hat in respect, as I did, to the industry and daring-do of Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, a young, very successful man whose resume and activities in philanthropy will fill an entire book.
The Delborough, Bishop Aboyade Cole St. VI, Lagos is his masterpiece!

Oluwagbeminiyi Omo Odegbami - the simple pilgrim returns home!

It is completely impossible to think that I am writing about Oluwagbeminiyi Omo Odegbami in the past tense.

One day to Good Friday, his message woke me up. He wanted my summary of the synopsis of the documentary project we were working on.

I told him not to wait for me but to go ahead and apply his abundant creativity to the project.

I was not exaggerating. Gbemi was an unknown and unappreciated G. He was a highly gifted, multi-talented young man. His writing skills, poetic literature in musical lyrics, rapping, elocution when he reads, and unique culinary skills, were all in this laid back young man whose life is simple, spartan and secluded, with no intention whatsoever to disturb the equilibrium of the chaotic world around him.

4 hours after our exchange, I receive the first of endless phone calls that eventful day, last Thursday: Gbemi is not feeling well; Gbemi is being taken to a hospital; the hospital has referred Gbemi to another hospital.
I direct that he be taken to a specialist hospital. His situation is critical. The hospital works on him for hours.

12 hours after our first communication, and exactly 5 minutes past midnight, at the birth of Good Friday (a significant day in Christendom), the doctors call me for the umpteenth time that day to break my heart with the news that haunts me till now - Gbemi has passed on!
Would it have happened had I not travelled? Would I have handled his situation better?

It was a shocking, devastating, painful and incomprehensible news. Good people should not die! Why should this young man, at the start of a new exciting chapter of his life, die so suddenly? Except, of course, (and I now believe so) that it is part of a divine plot that his spirit catches up with that of the ‘dead’ on Good Friday, his sins and transgressions wiped away on the cross of Calvary through Grace at Easter. His soul must be resting peacefully now with the Creator of the Universe.

This ‘sermon’ has become my consolation. This kind, gentle and simple heart, must no longer be tortured by the difficult challenges of his life in his world over which he had little control.

Gbemi, until his death, was unfamiliar with the world’s complex ways. His easy going life was totally harmless to anyone. His love riveted on his little son, his mother, his sisters, his music, his cooking, his song-writing, his friends and his current work in the radio station - probably in that order.

He finally found peace, plus the space and opportunity to express his multiple skills without the pressure of any external scrutiny, enjoying his productions in sights, performances and sounds.

Then death comes like a thief in the night to steal all of that, sn**ch him away and leave us with a yawning space in the puzzle of life.

Personally, this hurts real bad.

I miss Oluwagbeminiyi Omo Odegbami, an absolutely brilliant mind that is encapsulated in the frail body of a simple and gentle pilgrim. He came to the world, played his part quietly amidst unbelievable challenges, and now departs leaving a legacy of love and kindness to all those he encountered on his journey.

He told me some weeks ago that what he had missed the most in his life were the love, guidance and friendship of a father, but that he was happy to have finally found them in a relationship with me.

Adieus, Son, as you return to our Creator this morning!

‘Buy Ronaldo’ -lessons for the football business!

When my late friend, Peter Law, co-authored the best selling book titled ‘The Secret Life of football’ some 3 decades ago, it was the biggest exposé of the football industry.

Now comes Mario Leo, not with an exposé but a revelation on the power and potential of digital technology on the global football business. The book, titled ‘Buy Ronaldo’, captures the historic transfer of C7 from Real Madrid to Juventus that changed the global football business for good forever.

That is the backdrop to my conversation this Saturday morning with Mario Leo and Emeka Enyadike, two giants in the application of digital platforms to drive the football business, with an invaluable lesson for everyone involved in the football business.

It promises to be a masterclass this Saturday on Eagle 7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM

‘Buy Ronaldo’ and the power of digital technology - On ‘90 mins with Mathematical’ - this Saturday.

There is a book titled ‘Buy Ronaldo’ authored by my friend, Mario Leo, a German. It is an intriguing book about the power of digital technology, the role played by Facebook, Instagram and Google in making a footballer the biggest and the richest athlete on the planet.

Several years ago, there was rumor in the grapevine that the same player was leaving Real Madrid for Juventus, La Liga for Serie A, a massive move that revealed the full potentials of digital technology.

Today digital technology has taken the football business to the stratosphere.

Two men in that revolution, Mario Leo and Emeka Enyadike, co-founders of RESULTS Sports Africa and Digital Sports Africa, join me on Saturday morning in a masterclass - free-of-charge!

Mario Leo holds an MBA in football
Business and management, and has been working with over 80 of the topmost clubs in UEFA and around the world.

Emeka Enyadike is an alumni of the Euroleague Institute with an MBA in sports marketing and management. He is a trusted voice in African football with vast experiences in the global sports industry including Kick-Off, SuperSport, APO Group and FIFA.

These two masters of the digital platform join me in an unmissable conversation for the benefit of everyone involved and interested in the future of the football business, this Saturday morning from 7:30 on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM.

Another piece of unwritten history!

If you don’t have much to do thave some idle time, you are welcome to read this piece of unwritten and unimportant history.

A few days ago, Tosin Adebambo, a former player-colleague now based in the USA unearthed and posted a picture of a team of footballers.

The very rare picture speaks.
It is attached here for those old enough to recognize some or all of the faces. But look carefully. It is a very unusual and uncommon picture.

Standing from left to right are:
Christian Chukwu, Segun Odegbami, Leotis Boateng, Kadiri Ikhana, Adokiye Amiesimaka, Peter Fregene, Phillip Boamah, Annas Ahmed, Idowu Otubusen and Coach Jossy Lad.
Squatting from left to right are:
Best Ogedegbe, Adeleye Abai, Nathaniel Adewole, Mudashiru Lawal, Martins Onwuachi, Emmanuel Okala, and Sani Mohammed and coach Joseph Ladipo (aka Jossy Lad).
The team does not ‘add’ up to any known team in history.

The first thought that crosses the mind is that it is a picture of the Green Eagles of an era in the past - the late 1970s or early 1980s. Wrong!

Most of those in the picture were in the national teams at different times from the late 1960s to 1982. Two of the players never made the national team.
So what team is this?

To start with, none of the players in this star-studded team was still in the national team when my friends assembled in Ibadan in response to my invitation to play in the inaugural friendly match of my proposed first professional Football club in Nigeria, the Soccer Ambassadors FC, in 1983. The match was played under flood light at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.

The NFA at the time did not know how to react to the development and threatened to deal with any team that agreed to play against Soccer Ambassadors FC in what they considered an unapproved match with an unregistered club.

Only John Mastoroudes of Leventis United FC was courageous enough to allow his team to play the match. He believed that no rules were breached at the time.

The second picture is of some members of that famous team..from left: Paul Okoku, Mathew Onyemah (captain), Henry Ogboe (lurking at the back), Peter Egharevba, Leotis Boateng and Wole Odegbami.

The details of what transpired and everything else about that chapter of my life, one year in retirement from active football, and a return to it in 1984, will be told in a book that I am planning to write for the reading pleasure and benefit of primary and secondary school students interested to know my odyssey in Nigerian football - from 1960 to 2024!

Soon!

Before today ends!

Just before this day descends into the horizon of time, I want to recall that one of the great moments in the history of Nigerian football, one in which I was deeply involved, happened 44 years ago to the day - March 22, 1980, when, buoyed by the 100,000 spectators that filled the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, their voices lifting the spirit of the Green Eagles far beyond their normal capacities on that day, Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations trophy for the first.

That day hung on my mind this evening as if asking me to do something about it. What?

I humbly acknowledge the Creator of the Universe that made the match that changed the lives of all 22 of us, players, for good, forever.

I also thank all Nigerians for their sustained loved and appreciation till this day.

Congrats Finidi George for leading the Super Eagles to victory against Ghana earlier today. That victory is significant!

How important is the playing turf?
On ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’ this Saturday morning……

In Africa, this is the most neglected, the most under-rated, most abused, and the least discussed item in football development. I was in the CAF Players Committee for 6 years, so, I know!

In Europe, it is also not in every day conversation because it is already a priority and is treated with the utmost respect, attention and detail.

Every club, school, academy, higher institution and stadium, has a specialized department of Groundsmen handling the football FIELDS!

Nothing is spared in order to get the playing fields to be in perfect condition - manicured lush grass, flat surface, good drainage, rich soil, perfect irrigation, and round-the-clock maintenance.

To be the best club or player or coach, a very good playing turf is an absolute necessity. Indeed, it is King!

…easily the most important single component in the whole of football.
…makes players to play at their best.
…makes coaching easier, meaningful and even possible.
…makes television coverage easier and more pleasing to the eye.
…provides the game with a truly level-playing field for every player to be able to showcase their skills and ability.
…reduces chances for poor officiating by referees.
…makes fans to enjoy matches.
…makes marketing of football easier.
…makes match analysis by pundits and analysts easier.

Since the ‘destruction’ of stadia with good football grounds in Nigeria by ‘wicked’ administrators some 30 years ago, Nigeria may be about to confront the matter of excellent grass fields in their major stadia with the seriousness it deserves.

One man is in the forefront of this revolution - Engineer Lanre Adeleke, with his construction company, Peculiar Ultimate Concerns ltd, probably Nigeria’s number one indigenous stadium construction outfit. He discusses why the game has refused to fly to higher heights in the country, stagnated for 30 years!

He is my guest this Saturday morning on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’ from 7:30am on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM.

Blast from the past - a rare picture!

Paul Okoku (remember him?), Nigeria’s football hero now based in the USA, responded to my public request for any pictures related to my last posting on the Soccer Ambassadors FC, the football club I founded in the evening of my football career.

He responded with the attached picture. This is, indeed, a rare picture. It shows that Wole (my younger brother) and I actually played in opposing teams and against each other.

That must have happened only once (I am not sure), and this match between Leventis United FC and Soccer Ambassador FC was the occasion.

Paul Okoku posted this truly rare and historic picture. Paul is on the extreme left, the legendary midfield ‘wizard’, Mudashiru Lawal is next to him. Wole Odegbami is next to Muda. I am on the right!

Thanks ‘Uche’ for this rarest of pictures!

An interesting piece of History!

I am bored and at home this morning. I am nursing pain from my first experience of gout. The past 5 days have been horrible. I am healing.
I am going thru some old stuff in my library.
I find an interesting document that throws up some nostalgia as well as a little bit of history for Nigerian football followers.
I attach the document herein.

38 years ago, two years after I retired from active football as a player, I registered a football club in Ibadan with the intention of setting up Nigeria’s first professional football club. I named it ‘Soccer Ambassadors FC’.

The club took off like a rocket. We played two friendly football matches against Leventis United FC and a second club from Ghana (I don’t remember the name of the club now). The matches took place at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.

Members of the team during the matches were some brave, selected retired and about-to-retire colleagues, National and International footballers drawn from several clubs around the country. At my expense, the team was assembled in a hotel in Ibadan for the matches.

Members included Emmanuel Okala, Christian Chukwu, Kennedy Darpah, Jide Abiodun, Taiwo Ogunjobi, Kokumo ‘Kekedo’, Sam Abossey, Phillip Boamah, Idowu Otubusen, and others (I can’t even recall them all now).

The good news is that 38 years after, the club continues to exist, run by retired players in Ibadan that came after me. Since then, the club has consistently been participating annually in the IFA league and the FA Cup in Oyo State. It has become a vehicle for socialization and welfare of retired players in Ibadan. I salute those that have kept the project alive through the decades till now.

By the way, does any one have any pictures of those early days? Pls post to me!
