Many husbands no doubt have shortchanged the greatness that by default God deposited in their wives out of insensitive selfishness and unwarranted suppressive attitude.

Many women have totally disconnected from their natural basic responsibilities to their husbands and children the moment they get their profile hyped.

They totally tend to ignore the core narratives of a woman's obligation to her home because of the euphoria of the illusive power, fame and popularity offered to them.

In marriage, let's be guided to be each other's leverage to a fullfilling life.

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME BENIN

The capital city of our race only became known as "Edo" during the reign of Ewuare the Great (1440 - 1473). He renamed it after a faithful slave called "Edo". Indeed, the word "Edo" remains a bona fide name still in use today among many (but not all) of the Edoid clans. [It is interesting too that the original name of the trader from Kokori who succeeded Iyase n'Ohenmwen and became known as Iyase n'Oduhobo, was Edo .] Since Edo (Benin-City) only became known as Edo in Ewuare's time, what was it called before then? During the era of the first Ogiso Igodo - also known as Ogiso Obagodo - [circa 601 AD] it was called "Igodomigodo", capital of Ogu-dugu (the ancient name for the Benin Kingdom ). From the time of Ogiso Ere (son of the first Ovie of Ughelle ["Ughelli"]) until the last Ogiso Owodo [circa 1092], it was called "Ile". It was still called Ile during the period of republican rule between 1092 and 1180. (I might add that this period of instability witnessed several waves of outmigration) From the time of Oba Eweka I (circa 1180 - 1246) until Oba Ehenmihen (circa 1250 - 1260) it was called Ile Ibinu. Beginning with Oba Ewedo (circa 1260 - 1274) until the end of Uwaifiokun's reign (circa 1434 - 1440) it was known as "Ubini" until Ewuare changed it. Interestingly it continued to be called Ubini by a segment of the population as late as the reign of Olua (circa 1475 - 1480) because his son Iginua (who founded the Itsekiri Kingdom ) perpetuated it as the name of the " Benin Kingdom " among the Itsekiri. It was not until the beginning of the reign of Eweka II in 1914 that the anglicized name Benin-City became "official" for Edo . Source 1. Nigerian Govt alerts states as Cameroon prepares to release water from Lagdo Dam

The Federal Government has alerted Nigerians to the water release from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

In a press statement signed by the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Muhammed, on Tuesday, September 17, the FG disclosed that the authorities of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon will initiate controlled water releases starting on the same day, September 17, 2024.

It said the water discharge is anticipated to progressively escalate to 1000m³/s over the next seven days based on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River.

The statament reads: "The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency wishes to notify the general public that the authorities of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon have communicated to the agency that they will initiate controlled water releases at a rate of 100m³/s (8,640,000m³/day) starting today, 17 September 2023.

"The water discharge is anticipated to progressively escalate to 1000m³/s over the next seven days based on the inflow from the upstream Garoua River, which serves as the primary source into the reservoir and a significant tributary to the Benue River.

"Nonetheless, the dam operators have indicated that the planned water discharges will be gradual to avoid surpassing the conveyance capacity of the Benue River system and triggering substantial flooding downstream in Nigeria. The overflow from the Lagdo Dam is projected to cease once there is a noticeable reduction in the flow into the Lagdo reservoir."

The agency, however, said there is no cause for alarm.

"The agency unequivocally states that there is no need for alarm as major flooding downstream in Nigeria is not anticipated since the flow levels along the Benue River are still within cautionary limits."

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he cancelled his planned trip to America due to the recent flood disaster in Borno State.

“I was going directly to America, but I had to cut off the trip to be with you, if only for five minutes,” Tinubu said during a visit to the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar-Garbai El-Kanemi.

The president, who was abroad on official business, changed his plans after receiving news of the devastating flood that affected over 23,000 households in Maiduguri.

According to the president, Vice President Kashim Shettima briefed him on the situation but he vowed to go ahead with the emotional visit to Borno State.

Tinubu assured the victims of the federal government’s support. He said, “I am just here to sympathize with you. I know your palace was overtaken by flood.”

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) attributed the disaster to the overflow of the Alau Dam, triggered by heavy rainfall.

A UK-based Nigerian nurse who left her ten-week-old baby to die while she went to work at a hospital has been jailed for three years.

Mother, Ruth Auta, 28, abandoned Joshua Akerele in her nurse’s accommodation for eight hours so she could work her shift on December 20, 2022, Mail Online reports.

When she returned from work, she found her son lifeless in his cot and dialled 999, telling operators her son was not breathing.

The infant was pronounced dead an hour later with tests showing he may have ‘overheated’ due to the layers of clothing and bedding he was wrapped in.

Auta initially told the police that she had collected Joshua from a childminder after she finished work, took him back home, fed him, placed him on her bed, and then fell asleep next to him.

She claimed that when she woke up, she found him unresponsive.

Later in her police interview, Auta gave no comment to questions asked and was freed on bail pending further investigation.

Auta was charged after police found CCTV of her leaving and entering her accommodation without Joshua on the day of the tragedy.

Officers also discovered incriminating texts in which she urged her childminder to say she was looking after Joshua that day.

The childminder told officers she had not seen the infant for a number of days.

Auta was charged with cruelty to a child and pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates’ court on May 24, 2024, with her case adjourned by a month for sentence.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the federal government for the recent arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the takeover of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

In a statement released on Tuesday, September 10, Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing wave of oppressive actions by the current administration.

He warned that “the level of oppressive control now imposed surpasses even the harshest days of military dictatorship,” pointing to these events as alarming indications of a government clamping down on civil society.

Atiku also urged President Bola Tinubu to redirect the nation’s security apparatus towards addressing the pressing issues of terrorism and banditry, rather than targeting labor leaders and civil rights organizations.

It read “The escalating assault on civil society and the media by the Bola Tinubu administration are profoundly disturbing. The level of oppressive control now imposed surpasses even the harshest days of military dictatorship.

“The recent arrest of Mr. Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, en route to an official event, epitomizes this regime’s relentless campaign to intimidate and subdue organized labour.

“Just days prior, security forces detained a journalist, only to later claim it was a grievous error. What if the outcome had been fatal? Now, Tinubu’s regime extends its repressive grasp to encroach upon , an action that stands as a grave affront to our democratic values. This siege is anathema to the principles of freedom and justice.

“It is imperative that Tinubu and his security apparatus redirect their fervour and intimidation towards the actual perpetrators of violence — terrorists and bandits — who are inflicting immeasurable suffering upon the Nigerian people. -AA”

President Bola Tinubu says his administration is restoring confidence in the Nigerian economy through measures aimed at reducing inflation, stabilising the foreign exchange market, and improving fiscal management.

Speaking at the 17th Annual Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) Banking and Finance Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, September 10, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, assured the audience of his administration’s efforts.

He described the theme of the CIBN Conference, ‘Accelerating Economic Growth and Development: The State of Play and the Way Forward,’ as timely and imperative.

The President noted that the conference comes at a time when the nation is grappling with interrelated challenges. He identified the challenges as “high inflation, rising costs of living, unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and effects of global economic shifts.”

However, Tinubu observed that the challenges also present opportunities for growth and development. In addressing these challenges, the President said, “The administration had taken bold but painful steps to reform the macroeconomic environment.”

“Though painful in the short term, the removal of fuel subsidies is designed to free up budgetary resources for critical investments in infrastructure and social services.

“The adjustment of the monetary policy rate, a move aimed at curbing inflation and fostering a more market-oriented exchange rate system,” he added. Tinubu also stated that his administration is committed to strengthening infrastructure development to support Nigeria’s economic growth.

NAFDAC Denies Approving Jeremiah’s Miracle Products, Asserts That Prophet Jeremiah Lied About Their Approval of His Goods.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has revealed the only thing that can make him support a merger between his political party and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Recently, there have been speculations that the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other opposition parties may team up ahead of the 2027 election.

On May 17, Atiku Abubakar, PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said he would support Obi if the parties merge and decide to give the presidential ticket to the south-east region. However, Obi says he is not interested in the merger of parties merely for the purpose of winning the election.

“On the issue of merger… coming together of parties, I always say as long as any merger or coming together is for a better Nigeria, a new Nigeria, for governing properly, I’m for it,” Obi said to NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV,

“If it is just a merger for elections or state capture, I’m not part of it. I’m not desperate to be president. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people.

“We have a lot of potential. So if the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly or unlock all these things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it.

“It might be at the party or individual level. But we must come together to build a better Nigeria.”
