Last but not least: a recap of June! ✨

Sustainability 🌱: last month we hosted our final Clothing Exchange of the year. Together with KallioPPE, Icarus, FAM, Amnesty Amsterdam and VU Campus Radio we made it the biggest clothing market of the year! A special thanks to our sustainability-man Bart for hosting the monthly clothing exchanges this year. 💚

Wellbeing ❤️‍🩹: we hosted a Poetry Workshop in collaboration with VU Pride! We want to thank everyone for joining and letting their creativity out 🌈💭

External 📣: to celebrate the end of the year and all the successful events we organized together, we had a dinner with multiple Bridging Succes associations. Thanks to VU’s Diversity Office for their crucial role in this! Additionally, we attended the ALV of the LSVb (national student union). We wish the next board the best of luck! 🍀

Internal 🗣️: we hosted our Summer Event for all Studentend0k-associations. We had a fun Arcade Night at Club Puck! 👾 We also hosted a 80’s themed borrel with our dear Icarus! 🪩🕺🏼
Halfway June, we held our last ALV/GMM of this academic year where the candidate board for next year was voted in! We’ve been having multiple transfer activities last month and we wish them the best of luck! ❤️🧡

Afgelopen zaterdag 22 juni protesteerden wij samen met de LSVb en lokale bonden in Utrecht tegen de langstudeerboete en andere desastreuse bezuiningen op studenten en onderwijs. Studeren is een recht voor iedereen, ook mensen zonder rijke ouders of met een functiebeperking. Dit protest was slechts het begin, we zullen niet rusten totdat de langstudeerboete is ingetrokken. Word lid van je lokale studentenvakbond om te helpen bij toekomstige acties! ✊🏽🚩

Last Saturday, the 22nd of June, we protested in Utrecht together with the LSVb and local unions against the study delay fine and other disastrous budget cuts to students and education. Studying is a right for everyone and that includes students without wealthy parents and students with disabilities. This protest was only the beginning, we will not rest until the study delay fine is retracted. Join your local student union to help out with future actions! ✊🏽🚩

A short recap of the previous month May has finally arrived! ✨

Sustainability 🌱: another Clothing Exchange was hosted on May 15th in collaboration with Icarus and KallioPPE! 👚🩲

Education 📖: SRVU helped organize the “We need to talk about Democracy” evening on May 22nd. At this informative evening, various speakers gave their insights into what democracy at university means and what a more democratic university would look like.

Participation 🗳️: last month we held our very last Tosti Break of this academic year. We enjoyed engaging with students and making SRVU visible for the last time via this way! 🥪

Internal 🗣️: we held a Board Information Session to inform interested students about a board year at SRVU. Last month was largely decicated to finding a new board, and we did! Stay tuned to meet the new board for academic year 2024/2025! 🤫🎈

Last but not least: SRVU and NewConnective co-organized a dialogue on May 8th, where VU students had the opportunity to share how they have experienced and are experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Students shared vulnerable and emotional experiences and input was given for VU’s future policy on making students feel seen, heard, and safe on campus regarding this subject. Possibly to be continued in further dialogue sessions! 🗣️💭

Better late than never: a quick recap of the month April! ✨

Housing 🏡: Our board member Yannick was a guest on the Pink Elephant podcast, hosted by Ksenija Ustinovica from VU Campus Radio, to talk about SRVU and student housing. Bart was on the panel of two webinars by the international office for housing for internationals.

Wellbeing ❤️‍🩹: On April 25th the Wellbeing Committee took the initiative with Enactus VU to place a mirror where people could leave a compliment. We also gave out flowers and snacks to people to make their day a bit more special! 🌸

Participation 🗳️: In April we’ve had multiple Tosti Breaks, participated in the USR Candidate Debate and did a full week of campaigning for the Student Council Elections. We are happy with the results! Besides this, together with Enactus VU and ISA we hosted the Holi Event, to celebrate the Indian Festival of Colors! 🎨

Sustainability 🌱: Another month, which means another Clothing Exchange! We thank Icarus and KallioPPE for joining us again!

Furthermore, we hosted a board game night for our members. We thank the members for joining us this evening!

In the past few days, we and students from all over Amsterdam have been horrified to see the police brutality against students exercising their right to protest.

Universities have a duty of care towards their students, and should actively hear out the concerns of students and accommodate them, not endanger them with police violence.

We call on the UvA and VU to listen to the students about their concerns in good faith and to not let this abhorrent violence against students on campus happen again.

You are the face of the SRVU, which means that you talk and maintain contact with the press, and represent the SRVU in meetings with the VU or national and municipal organisations.
Board coordination
You chair the internal board meetings and the General Member’s Meeting and manage the board and the SRVU coordinators on a day-to-day basis.

Vice-Chair (8-10 hours) 🤝
Board coordination
You replace the chair in external representation or board coordination if necessary, and co-manage the day-to-day business of the union alongside the chair.
Internal point of contact
You are the confidential counsellor of the board, and you ensure a pleasant and constructive internal working culture and relationship within the board and the union.

Secretary (8-10 hours) 💻
Board and membership administration
You are responsible for taking minutes in every main meeting, managing the Board’s e-mail, keeping the membership administration up-to-date and other administrative duties.
Newsletter
You are responsible for keeping the members updated on the union activities via our newsletter.

Treasurer (6-8 hours) 💸
Financial Policy
You are responsible for the finances of the association. This means that you prepare a budget, monitor compliance, and present financial biannual reports. You are also the manager of the cash register and you monitor daily expenses and income.

Externus (6-8 hours) 🤳🏼
Promotion and social media
You are responsible for managing the various social media accounts of the union, and the design of flyers, posters etc.
Associations
You are responsible for maintaining good contacts with the (study)associations at the VU and taking part in meetings to connect their needs to our services.

General board member (6-8 hours) 😎
As a general board member, you focus entirely on substantive portfolios and board initiatives.

Last week the elections for the Student Councils 2024-2025 took place. We are happy to have obtained the following seats:

While the first week of the new period already passed, we will share a short recap from March! ✨

Mid-March we organised a borrel together with ASVA, as a kick-off for the new, big, national campaign on the reducation of the basisbeurs (basic study grant)! If you want to keep informed, keep an eye on or socials. Want to be involved? Slide in our DM! ✊🏽

We held some information sessions to inform students about the union and the upcoming student council elections. The elections will happen next week! Keep an eye on our socials to meet our candidates and make sure to vote between April 15th-18th! 💭🗳️

On March 20th our Decolonisation Committee organised the Decolonizing Minds and Space workshop, where different speakers talked about the topic. Thanks to the speakers and the students who attended! 🤎

Another month, which means another Clothing Exchange happened! We thank our loyal partners Icarus and KallioPPE again for collaborating with us on making the d0k a great market place! 😎

Last but not least: we held our fourth ALV (General Members Meeting), where our Half Year Report was approved and more internal union business was discussed.

We are excited for what’s to come in April! ❤️

De basisbeurs voor uitwonende studenten wordt volgend jaar met €164 per maand verlaagd naar €302 euro. Dat terwijl de basisbeurs volgens advies van de Sociaal Economische Raad voor de gemiddelde student al te laag was om met een bijbaan en ondersteuning van ouders te studeren zonder in de schulden te komen. We kunnen dit niet laten gebeuren! ✊🏽🚩

The basic grant for students living away from home will be reduced by €164 per month to €302 per month next year. And that while, according to advice from the Social and Economic Council, the basic grant was already too low for the average student to study with a side job and parental support without going into debt. We can’t let this happen! ✊🏽🚩

DECOLONIZING MINDS AND SPACE EVENT 🌍💭🤎
Decolonization has become a buzzword used by universities, governments, companies and individuals and is often understood as “taking away the colonial”. But what does that mean? Is decolonization just gaining governmental independence from the colonizer, or does it involve more than that?

In this event we will have conversations about these questions with activists, professors and students. We will talk about what decolonization means generally, how and why we should center our actions around indigenous voices and what decolonization means in the context of academia.

The event is open to anyone who wants to learn and talk about decolonization, regardless of your prior knowledge. We invite everyone, students, teachers and people outside of the university context to attend and are excited to listen and learn from each other!

✨ Recap of February! ✨

We were present at the Student Participation Market on February 13th, talking to students about the upcoming elections and SRVU. The day after, on Valentine’s Day, we handed out free chocolate and talked to students about what love means to them. ❤️🍫

On February 8th we co-hosted a kick-off event for students all around the country about better democracy in higher education. This was a collaboration with PAX, CSR UvA, LOF and LSVb, it was a great succes! ✊🏽

Additionally, our cooperative Clothing Exchange continued! We hosted another successful Clothing Market on February 27th, in collaboration with Icarus and KallioPPE. 👖🧣

This month we also organized our very first Member Event of the academic year. We hosted the big SRVU Pubquiz and had a great borrel! 🥂

Lastly, we co-organized the Chinese New Years celebration in collaboration with the Diversity and International Office of VU, Enactus VU and USC. Chinese students and staff showed up to celebrate the new year while enjoying the ceremony, student performances and food! 🇨🇳🐉

FRACTION FRIDAY: Meet the SRVU fraction of this years Student Councils! Continuing with a member of the Faculty Student Council of BETA! 🤓

“Hey there, I’m Pahal, a proud member of FSR BETA! As Head of Education, I’m deeply involved in various portfolios, particularly focusing on Education & Wellbeing as well as Sustainability. It’s truly fulfilling to contribute towards fostering a better university. From activating education to improving student life, I love working with people who have similar ideals, which is why I ran with SRVU. SRVU is a community of dedicated individuals constantly working towards making a difference, and I’m happy to be a part of this union! I’m look forward to what we can achieve together.”

✨ Recap of January! ✨

This month we handed out free tosti’s again at the Main Building! We really enjoyed talking to students about SRVU and what the union does. 🥪

We have been interviewed this month by NAP Nieuws () and AdValvas () regarding developments in Kronenburg (area next to Uilenstede campus). The national government finally permitted 438 new student houses to be built, with hopefully more to come. Check out the Advalvas website or our last reel to find out more! 🏡

This month we also expanded our Clothing Exchange through cooperation with Icarus (.icarus) and KallioPPE (). Many students found new outfits to wear, thanks to everyone who dropped by! 🧤👖

Shortly after the Christmas break we held our third ALV (General Members Meeting) of the academic year, to discuss many interesting topics regarding our internal structure. Additionally, we organised a New Years Borrel at the Studentend0k for all d0k associations, to celebrate the start of the new year together! 🎆🥂

Lastly, we attended a Bridging Success dinner with other associations and councils, where plans were discussed about upcoming events in 2024. Stay tuned! ⚡️

Hey y’all, I’m Suvarn a general member of the USR! As a general member I work on a number of portfolios in the committees of Education & Research and Communication, which is great for working towards pushing for a more inclusive VU weather it be holding the Uni accountable or pushing for better practices. Running through the SRVU helped me connect with the organisation who most aligned with my ideals and thus a group I could work with through the year! ✊🏽

Meet the decolonization committee of the SRVU! ✊

We work to make the VU a place where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels included. We also stand up for decolonisation, anti-discrimination and social justice both inside and outside of the VU. We work with other wonderful organizations and people at the VU on this and we organize events to promote awareness and to contribute to an inclusive and socially engaged community of students at our university! 💛

I’m Sanne and I’m currently in the FSR humanities and part of the SRVU fraction. Being part of SRVU means getting to know all these wonderful, like-minded people. People who don’t just sit around and complain about the injustices in the world, but people who speak up, who uplift each other and show serious commitment to the cause. I’m excited for this year to make sure students are properly represented and that no one is left out, because the university should be a safe space to all of us.

✨ November recap! ✨

Last month we hosted the Diwali event together with .vu, .students and . It was a wonderful evening and we enjoyed the celebration with music, dances and lots of food! 🕯️

The week before the national elections, we handed out free tosti’s in the Main Building to raise awareness about the elections! 🥪

At our Housing S.O.S. event, we collaborated with the USR, CSR and ASVA to inform students about their rights as tenants. A big thanks to all students who came to visit and thanks to our partner !Woon, who are a great font of knowledge when it comes to all topics regarding housing for helping out so many students!

At the Griffioenbijeenkomst VU employees and members of the broader VU community were invited to enjoy various presentations about the climate and sustainability at the VU. Afterwards, we enjoyed a delicious vegan dinner, discussing various sustainability issues while getting to know each other better. 🌱

Oh, the weather outside was frightful, but the clothes were so delightful at our Clothing Exchange this November! Students showed up to buy warm winter coats and sweaters to protect against the cold while looking good too! 😎🧣

At the beginning of the month, we celebrated our CoBo! We introduced ourselves and presented our policy plan, thanks to everyone who joined us! 🥂

Various study associations and other student organisations met at the UvO hosted by the USR to discuss pressing matters such as alcohol policy, funding for student events, the student pact and more! Cooperation between students at the VU is close to our heart at SRVU as it is for the USR. Besides the UvO, we were also present at A*O (Amsterdam Student Meeting, together with multiple representive bodies), to discuss topics that concern all students in Amsterdam.
