👑 DATA IS KING 👑
📊When it comes to assessing environmental impact, there are two key data paths: primary and secondary. What is the difference?
🔍 Primary data: This is your unique, firsthand data, that has been collected directly from the source.
📦 Secondary data: Pre-existing data from sources like extensive Ecoinvent database, it’s efficient but requires careful selection.
We always advocate for primary data, but in times of complexity or challenge, secondary data from EcoInvent steps in, offering valuable insights.

From all of us at Ecochain, we wish you a very happy and healthy New Years! ✨
Our New Year's resolution is to help even more companies understand and reduce their environmental footprint, in 2022 and further!
What is your sustainable resolution for the coming year?
How to turn the heads of consumers in a saturated market?
You know what to do…
The customer use phase can take up to 80% (!!) of your product’s total environmental footprint.
The majority of a product’s life span often takes place in the time it’s used by consumers.
Meaning: measuring the environmental footprint all the life phases of your product is crucial. ♻️
You might be thinking, isn’t this the responsibility of the consumer?
Well- the way your product is designed, heavily influences the way it’s used. And that’s why the sustainability in your product’s use phase is often considered your responsibility.
By analysing how customers use your products, you can identify certain pinpoints that might result in damage to the environment.
It’s 1969 - We put a man on the moon, and we conducted the first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). All in one year.
Did you know The Coca-Cola Company was the first company to conduct an LCA? 🧐
The goal? Comparing beverage containers to find lowest releases to the environment.
This included: quantifying raw materials, fuels, and environmental of manufacturing processes.
A good start.
In the 90's International Standards Organization (ISO) published a new and improved LCA standard.
Fast forward to 2021 - It’s still the standard for LCA used today.
Maybe Coca Cola didn’t invent the modern LCA. But they will forever be linked to the first attempts of environmental footprinting.
'The rest of my company won't understand sustainability- it's too difficult'
But you need them on your side, don’t you?
Working as a team on goals such as sustainability is essential!
So, follow these 5 simple tips to help you get there. 👇
Breaking News: there is more to the story than lowering your CO2 emissions.💥
Don’t get us wrong – CO2 emissions are a ‘hot’ topic for a reason.
BUT concentrating on them solely is like trying to solve a puzzle using the same piece over and over again.
As we know by now, tackling climate change takes a few more pieces.
What can you do? Measure the FULL environmental scope of your value chain. Think of biodiversity, water, waste etc.
This way we don’t forget about the ‘environment’ in environmental footprint.🌱

The new proposed EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive aims to ensure that a larger scope of companies (about 50.000 companies more) across all sectors publicly disclose even more detailed and transparent information on:
(1) How affects their own business (risks and opportunities – outside-in perspective);
2) The impacts they have on both people and our environment (inside-out perspective).
This type of reporting is called: "double materiality perspective". Because it reflects both the inwards and outwards impacts of a company:
👉 Company/financial materiality = inwards impact.
👉 Societal & environmental impact/impact materiality = outwards impact.
What are your thoughts on double materiality? Read the full guide on the CSRD right here: https://bit.ly/3nDFqYH
👉 How consumers use your product can sometimes take up to 80% (!!) of your product’s total environmental footprint.
And if you think about it, this doesn’t really come as a surprise. The majority of a product’s life span often takes place in the time it’s used by consumers.
Consumers wash, maintain, and use your products. That takes up energy, water, and consumption of specific maintenance products (e.g. cleaning products/repairs).
Now- the way you design your product heavily influences the ways in which it’s used. And that’s why in your product’s use phase is considered your responsibility. ♻️
What should you consider when measuring the of your product's use phase?

, , strategy, carbon/climate neutrality, or net-zero. When companies talk about their sustainability strategy, they mostly focus on ‘carbon’ or ‘climate’ terminology. For good reason of course:
👉 Carbon emissions often make up the largest impact hotspot in a company’s operations. And greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are THE term that is linked to the climate crisis.
👉 But, by constantly focusing on carbon- or greenhouse gas emissions- aren’t we forgetting the rest of the ‘environment’ in environmental footprint? What are the risks of a tunnel vision on carbon/GHG emissions in your sustainability strategy?
♻️ Simply put: solely focusing on climate impact, can result in too much focus on a single issue in your sustainability strategy. By doing so, you can potentially exclude other relevant impact outcomes that could heavily impact both the environment as well as your reduction efforts.
So, how can businesses make sure they incorporate all impact outcomes in their sustainability strategy? Find out: https://bit.ly/3j384zN
Great! You measured your environmental footprint and can now identify the emission hotspots in your business operations.
You know exactly where to focus your reduction efforts now. But..where do you start? 🤔
may seem a great option, however, it’s not a long-term solution.
So, it’s time to start building your emissions reduction strategy from the bottom up. Your reduction strategy should provide a short- to medium-term roadmap. Say, 1 to 5 years- to implement measures to reduce emissions.
How to turn this into a success? By following these 5 steps provided by our fantastic sustainability partner Nexio Projects👇

's message was clear: Immediate, rapid, and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are a necessity to limit the changes connected to exceeding 1.5°C of global warming.
👉 So- what can business leaders do?
Our collective strategy has to come down to ceasing our use of fossil fuels, using clean energy sources, and going all the way to net-zero. Most importantly- we have to act now.
By adhering to the Paris Goals, cutting greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero, and using Science-based Targets, businesses make both themselves- as well as our planet: future-proof.
♻️ Below you will find our 5 steps towards net-zero that will help business leaders ensure their climate strategy adheres to the 1.5°C-2°C goal.

Almost 70% of the tenants of logistics real estate in the Netherlands take sustainability into account when making location decisions.
This makes the Netherlands a global leader- France coming in second place with 55%.
This international research 'The future of global logistics real estate' executed by JLL, asked for the opinions of 720 logistics experts in 42 countries. It reveals that 75% of the respondents expect logistic real estate to grow with 5%- up to 20% in the coming three years.
Combined with this growth, comes the pressing urgency of efforts. Especially the urgency for CO2 reduction measures in energy efficiency processes.

Did you know that the use phase of apparel is the second biggest driver? 👕
Common sense makes it sound simple. The more wear we get out of a piece of clothing, the lower the overall impact. We distribute the impact of the production across a longer time – the “environmental footprint per wear” becomes lower.
But there is a catch to that logic.
A big chunk of the carbon footprint of a piece of clothing actually occurs in the use phase – often more than 23%. Washing, drying, ironing – a lot of energy and water go into keeping our clothing fresh, clean, and beautiful.
So, paradoxically, we could save a quarter of our clothing’s carbon footprint by never washing it. 🤯
In the past, there was always a fear that becoming more meant- making less money.
However, nothing could be more untrue- as BlackRock's research show.
♻️ BlackRock manages more than 9 trillion US dollars in assets, which makes them the world’s biggest asset manager.
♻️ And their latest research on the UN Sustainable Development Goals ( ) shows: Making SDG impact is closely tied to financial impact.
So, how exactly do the SDG indicators overlap with financial impact? What opportunities await? 👇
BlackRock research reveals: Sustainability results in long-term financial performance - Ecochain Make money and save the planet? Definitely possible. BlackRock research found that the cost of not achieving the UN SDGs is greater than the cost of action.
The Environmental Profit & Loss account is a method for placing a monetary valuation on a company’s footprint. Including the environmental and social impact derived from all its business operations and entire supply chain.
So, why is an EP&L so useful?
👉 An EP&L account is expressed in economical valuations (£, $ and €) instead of different environmental impact outcomes such as kg CO₂-eq or kg CFC-11-eq.
👉 This enables organizations to compare and consolidate different types of environmental impact (such as climate change, particulate matter, or toxicities). Environmental impact can now be expressed in a single indicator.
EP&L expresses in terms that all businesses understand. It talks money.
So, which companies work with EP&L accounts? And most importantly- how do they use their results?
What’s an Environmental Profit & Loss account? And how do companies use it? - Ecochain Environmental Profit & Loss Accounting (EP&L), is a great method for measuring and quantifying the environmental impact of an organization’s activities. How does it work?
