A fresh raw herring or “Hollandse Nieuwe” is a typical Dutch delicacy. This street food is especially popular in the summer months. The raw herring has been specially treated to get its distinctive taste. A herring is only called “Hollandse Nieuwe” when it is young and lean, and caught between May and July.

This Saturday in Amsterdam! The annual Kingsday celebrations!

Starting March 22 the new exhibition at the Fabrique des Lumieres in Amsterdam called "Dutch Masters" from Vermeer to Van Gogh.

Now at the "Rijksmuseum" the Frans Hals exhibition. Until June 9. Tickets available online and at the Rijksmuseum. Ends June 9 so be quick.

As we approach spring we can look forward to the biggest flower exhibition in the world "De Keukenhof". This years edition is from March 21 until May 12. Tickets and tours by bus leaving from different places in Amsterdam are available online.

One of the annual highlights of the Amsterdam summer is the Prinsengracht Concert, a spectacular classical music show on the water in front of the hotel Pulitzer Amsterdam. During the Prinsengracht concert, thousands of people can enjoy beautiful music in boats and on the quay at the foot of the Westertoren. Tonight, August 19 2023!

On a rainy day it is good to go somewhere inside to be dry, warm and enjoy a good cup of coffee and maybe a nice lunch!

As of today you can buy freshly caught herring called “ Hollandse Nieuwe”. The herring season has started. Buy one, try one 🐟.

Repeat after us. 'PO-fer-jus'. These little fluffy clouds of battery goodness are served up at restaurants and pancake houses all over Amsterdam, but nothing can beat a bag of hot, buttery poffertjes from a street market vendor. Sprinkle them with powdered sugar and let the good times roll.

If you’re not feeling quite brave enough to try raw herring, then you can still get your fishy fix from kibbeling – battered and deep fried morsels of white fish; usually cod. They’re every bit as delicious as they look, and usually served with a mayonnaisey herb sauce and lemon. Try it hot and fresh from a street market or food truck for the best kibbeling experience.

Raw herring may sound a little scary to the uninitiated, but every visitor to Amsterdam should give it a go. You’ll spot haringhandels (herring carts) serving up this Dutch speciality all over the city - ask for a ‘broodje haring’ to get the fish served in a small sandwich with pickles and onions. The best time to try raw herring is between May and July when the herring is said to be at its sweetest.

After a renovation the Rembrandt Museum re-opens on March 18!

It’s just like using your contactless card in the supermarket, but with one difference: you must check out at your destination! Pre-registration or downloading an app is not necessary.

It is important that you always check in and out with the same pass, card, mobile phone or smartwatch. Otherwise your transaction is not complete. Payment is secure and automatic. The next day the amount will be shown in your payment overview with the description NLOV. If you pay with your mobile or smartwatch, the amount will be debited from your account immediately after you check out.

Every year at the last weekend of August is the opening of the cultural season with what is called "Uitmarkt". It features a weekend where all cultural artists present there new programs for the coming season. This year Uitmarkt takes place at the Museumplein and at Leidseplein. It is worth a vist!
