WHAT’S GOING ON | Pear Ring
Have you heard of the Pear? Also known as the "anti-engagement ring." It is part of a unique social experiment which claims to eliminate the need for dating apps. Basically, it’s a turquoise ring that tells people you’re single. Many are feeling “dating app fatigue” and struggle to date the old fashioned way. According to a recent study in the UK, three out of four single people would prefer to meet a future partner organically, as in real life. And that’s where Pear fits in. While rejection is a normal part of dating, the ring simplifies the process, and gives you an opportunity to initiate a conversation.

WHAT’S GOING ON | OPTINK
Did you know that 10,000 Germans wait for organ transplants each year, but three die daily due to a lack of donors? Despite 84% expressing willingness, only 0.001% are actually registered donors. One reason is that Germany is an 'opt-in' country, requiring proof of consent for organ donation. That is why and McCann created the initiative.
Designed by Berlin-based artist , the tattoo was made to be recognizable and easily scalable, and act as a proof of will. It is also a conversation starter and a statement to family members, making them aware of the person’s donor status. The campaign has already managed to turn tattoo studios all over the country into organ donation recruitment centers and record over 100 tattoos, which represent a potential of over 700 lives saved.

MIKE WATCHES | π
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, a screening of Darren Aronofsky's film "Pi" took place on March 14th in Los Angeles. The film was remastered and shown in Imax, courtesy of a collaboration between A24 studios and Imax. In anticipation of the re-release, Aronofksy reverted to the original black and white reversal 16mm,and scanned it at 8K, and converted the original stereo mix to an Atmos experience. He was inspired by Jim Jarmusch's fight for filmmakers to regain control of their work, and negotiated to have the film rights returned to him. Aronofsky and A24 previously collaborated on "The Whale," and they are planning to continue working together on new and repertory releases.

MIKE LOVES | Good On You
is an ethical fashion app for conscious consumers. Their motto is simple: "Wear the change you want to see." There is much deception surrounding the fashion industry (greenwashing) which makes it difficult to distinguish between true sustainable and ethical clothing and mere deceptions. Good On You is built around transparency because they believe we have a right to know about the products we buy and brands should be accountable for the promises they make. They do this is by providing a clear and comprehensive rating system based on a brand’s impact in three key areas: people, the planet, and animals. They also provide regular updates on the latest sustainable fashion news and unique styling ideas that align with these values. Fashion is a transformative force, and a transparent and sustainable fashion industry can inspire change in other areas of our lives.

MIKE WATCHES | Dead Ringers
Writer Alice Birch has reimagined Croennberg’s film story, with Rachel Weisz taking on the double role of the main characters, twin OB-GYN’s originally played by Jeremy Irons. As in the original, the identical Mantle twins share everything- drugs, lovers, and even an obsession to push the boundaries on medical ethics. However, one of the noteworthy distinctions of this remake is the gender swap of the central characters. In their pursuit to challenge outdated practices and prioritize women's healthcare, the show will delve into significant themes, such as women's health and the issue of underfunding in this area. The limited series is set to hit Prime Video on April 21.

MIKE WATCHES // We are re-watching Sopranos & you should too! Aside from it being a phenomenal series, it truly changed the perception of TV series vs feature film. Sopranos is unlike anything before its time, introducing captivating story lines in the form of a long term narrative. It presents complex characters and sets up real & raw experiences that deeply establish character arcs so that characters can develop a connection with the audience. It’s storytelling a TV narrative on an emotional level; something many shows couldn’t do with their episodic format. You must give Sopranos a watch,l or give us a thumbs up if you think this is one of the best series ever made!

MIKE LOVES// DEBORAH TURBEVILLE
Fashion photography is usually a reflection of what’s trendy or in style. Turbeville was different for several reasons: she cared more about cultivating an atmosphere that made viewers curious about the concept behind her photos. And she hated fashion. It would seem counterintuitive, for a fashion photographer who hates fashion, but this attitude contributed to her success. She once said, “the idea of disintegration is really at the heart of my work." Most photographers of her time preferred sexy, brightly colored photos that showcased beautiful models in expensive clothes. She prioritized the atmosphere and mood of her photos because she aimed to evoke feelings and intrigue, not pander to consumers.

MIKE LOVES // We recently had the opportunity to see Maggie Cowle's work up close. You may recognize her illustrations in the magazine, Secret Menu (article From Sea to Table). Her sketch-like style and unpretentious subject matter revolve around "comfort, security, and the warmth of food" and provide a narrative in a familiar and grounded way. "Taste memories" are powerful because they involve all five senses. The food itself can be an effective trigger for more profound memories. Her art is a sentimental reflection of food experiences, the special moments we have sharing a meal with friends or a dinner meal in a distant city.

MIKE// WATCHES Have you seen In Bruges? The film begins with a hit on a priest gone wrong, which eventually leads two hitmen to Bruges, Belgium to await further instructions. As the two men walk through the city, awaiting further instructions, we see art like The Judgement of Cambyses by Gerard David and The Last Judgment by painter Hieronymus Bosch. These two particular pieces, created by early Netherlandish painters, are known for their blend of realism and symbolism and their depictions of religious scenes, characterized by themes of moralism and pessimism. These paintings play an integral part in the film, as the hitmen struggle with feelings of guilt, the meaning of sin, and the future of the soul. To them, the city is Purgatory: removed from time; a place where they wait for judgment. “Maybe that’s what hell is? The entire rest of eternity spent in Bruges.”

MIKE// LOVES

Have you seen Chungking Express? Directed and written by Wong Kar-wai, it is a contemporary love story set in Hong Kong, in the year 1994. To quote Christopher Doyle, the cinematographer who worked with Wong on the film, “The Wong Kar-wai style is to change a situation rather than a performance.” This statement explains a great deal about the style of the movie. The movie itself is not plot-driven, so scenes unfold naturally- which worked well with Wong’s “laissez-faire” style of direction. In fact, many of the scenes did not even have a proper script. The actors were encouraged to improvise scenes, so their characters could develop organically. From a production standpoint, Chungking Express must have been quite a challenge to make; between the chaotic location, the small budget, the unfinished script, and the fact that it was shot in just 23 day. However, we’d argue that these production limitations contributed to the dream-like, chaotic feel of the movie because it prioritized feeling and expression over convenience.

MIKE // WHATS GOING ON
DALL-E is an A.I. that generates imagery based on prompts given by users. Although this technology is relatively new and only generates images, the potential applications are already evident. As a production company, we see the potential, especially in areas like VFX, CGI, and compositing. This technology is continuously progressing, and we wonder: will it eliminate the need for roles such as flame artists and other VFX artists? Or simply change their roles? As many creatives know, getting the idea from your head to the page is not necessarily easy. One could argue that part of a creative’s struggle is the ability to fully encapsulate your vision and present it as your mind sees it.
Maybe DALL-E could assist with this and not just become another area for advertisement.

WHAT’S GOING ON//
June 24th 2022: After setting a near 50 year precedent, Roe v. Wade was overturned. A woman's right to autonomy- has been politicized. Women in the low income bracket & women in conservative states, will be the ones who suffer as a result of this decision. Not the politicians who pushed for this reversal and not the Supreme Court Justices who did it. The right to make choices about our own bodies has been called into question. And we should be scared because this could mark the reversal of more of our rights. As a female run production company we stand with all the women whose rights have been taken away. Whose futures are now determined by bias and religious beliefs they may not share. If you’d like the donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds please follow the link below:
