In honour of The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we will be showcasing a series of videos submitted to The One Minutes in 2018 made by Palestinian artists at our office here at Remise in Amsterdam (address in bio).
Come by Remise to take a look at the series! It will be on show from 14:00-18:00 today.
The series coincides with a work in progress, research report conducted by our publicity intern, Emily Nugraha, a Communication Science student studying at UvA.
At The One Minutes, we hold core values true to the belief in global solidarity and often promote marginalised voices in our work, it is important for us to advocate for social causes we stand by.
While scrolling through our collection, Emily noticed a pattern of Palestinian and Israeli submissions using the word freedom in either their title or in their tagged description, indicating the use of a freedom frame to explore the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
While comparing the videos submitted by Israeli vs Palestinian artists, she noticed distinct differences between the ways in which the artists portrayed the sense of freedom. For example, one video made by an Israeli artist symbolised freedom through the portrayal of a night club scene, while a Palestinian artist symbolised freedom through the portrayal of an animal in a confined, trapped space.
Emily hopes to explore these differences further. “Videos submitted to The One Minutes, offer the opportunity for people to engage in discourse through a more interpersonal lens and understanding, free of biased journalistic pursuits. The format of video art offers more than just representation, but can construct spaces of resistance where individuals engage with their communities and become more empowered social actors.”
