Story-telling : forgotten q***r heroes and what we can learn from them.
The LGBTQAI+ community as scapegoat
The organization of Pride Amsterdam gave me the opportunity to give two story telling shows in Parool Theater here in Amsterdam, for which I am very grateful.
The word in 2024 that defines Pride was “Together”. It was this word that motivated me to tell the story of my personal q***r heroes, gay resistance fighters in WW2, Willem Arondeus, Frieda Belinfante and Sjoerd Bakker.
Willem Arondeus famous last words were, “Let the Dutch know that homosexuals are no cowards”
After all he was the organizer of the assault of the registry office in 1943, was betrayed and was executed by the Nazi’s.
Him showing the Dutch that q***r people are brave was to no avail. The Dutch preferred to contribute this act to a heterosexual person, Gerrit van Veen, who was also part of the group but not the leader and organizer.
Brave Q***r people were just an inconvenient truth in post war homophobic Holland.
Why did Arondeus this? I firmly believe that he was led by wanting to fight injustice. Being an openly gay man in those days and feeling the consequences he could not, not fight the nazi’s. If he wanted the Dutch to look different at the LGBTQAI+ community then he had to lead. How else could he expect others to fight for us?
As mentioned to no avail but now is the time for a different narrative of history. A history that is diverse and inclusive.
That means that the community with all the letters we have these days should stand in front of each other. Because what we have in common is that society and politicians like to use the community as scapegoat for any problem for which they do not have a solution.
Society will not stand in front of the community. The Aids epidemic that hit the community is its most poignant example.
A virus (hiv/aids) that hit the community first was ignored for six years, a more recent virus (covid) made the world stop, the first vaccin was on the market within six months.
Two viruses, two different responses by society. There is only one conclusion, the world turned their back on the LGBTQAI+ community because they just didn’t care.
Prep that will stop the spread of the hiv/aids virus had to be fought hard to be prescribed and paid for. Again, the motivation was not science but judgement by society.
For my trans brothers and sisters goes the same, you are at a starting point of your emancipation. A new right-wing government in the Hague can easily conclude that this "wokeness" should not be subsidized.
As a community we have the strength and power to make a fist, therefore “Together” is better than each letter on its own.
Yes, I know white homosexual man are too loud and too present but better “Together” and learn from each other than on your own.
To my white homosexual brothers I say, do not be so self-centered, make room and place for our LGBTQAI+ brothers and sisters.
Look at our Q***r hero Willem Arondeus who if he had lived now would have said. “Let the world know that LGBTQAI+ people are not cowards”
As the most courageous thing you can do is go on the journey to become who you are.
Recently I was also asked to shed my historical light over how to be inclusive and diverse by DE &I officers from Merck.
Companies that are diverse and inclusive just perform better but this is not something achieved in the short term. This will take time and investment. Questions such as is Pride still needed, how far are we on the way I answered and put in a historical perspective.
Dear white heterosexual men, we are just starting. Women and white homosexual men have started their emancipation about 50 years ago and are still nowhere on the same level with you.
The emancipation for many of my LGBQAI+ brothers and sisters, is just starting. So yes, Pride and many other activities are still needed as the world is still not a safe space and role-models for us are still not present in many areas and organizations.
And no, there is not a sudden rise in LGBTQAI+, we have just begun our emancipation but we were always there. There was just no space for us on the stage.
The world will just be so much more fun and interesting and happier if its more diverse and inclusive. For this the world, companies and organizations need to be more inclusive and diverse.
If your company or organization is trying to be more inclusive and diverse and would like to shed a historical light and discuss the matter. I am always available for speaking engagements.
I would like to thank Pride Amsterdam again for the opportunity to speak in het Parool Theater.

Anita Bryant and a Dutch singer
The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was always a beacon of decorum. High on the walls the names of all the classic composers, whose music has been conducted in the past hundred years that the Concertgebouw existed.
Where classic music loving Amsterdam, the cultural and economic elite of the city would meet to feel slightly superior in this egalitarian country. Now it was the center of homosexual men that dominated the stage, jeans, t-shirts and leather dominated. Handkerchieves betrayed sexual preferences.
A middle-aged woman sang on stage, in a long flowing dress and cotton candy hair, she sang a self-written song in Dutch. The song was addressed to Anita, an orange queen from Florida, who as a newly reborn Christian had gone on a crusade against homosexuals.
As g**s would recruit children and young man to join their perverted lifestyle as she put it in an interview. He thought to himself that he had known at age eleven he was gay, no recruiting needed.
He now tried to focus on the singer and her lyrics, when the meaning of the words sank in, he got chills. She was such an unlikely advocate for the gay cause, mainstream popular, she was famous for songs with no significant meaning. But here she sang about gay man to stand up against homophobia and encouraging gay lifestyle. It was the world upside down. He felt emotional.
The concert had been organized in Amsterdam to raise money so they could advertise in the American newspapers their support to the gay community in Florida. They had felt it was important to show solidarity with our gay brothers and sisters on the other side of the Atlantic. You are not standing alone.
The concerts proceeds proved to be enough to advertise and the remaining amount was the starter for what in 1987 would become the homo monument. The first in the world for gay victims, past, present and future.
A gay man fighting the nazi's and few know his story. Why? This story teller gives the answer. Every day a posting about Willem and his friends.
On the 2nd of August I will be telling the story of Willem Arondeus and his friends in het Parool Theater. One night only, entry is free, just book your ticket.

Little stories
Putin and the Mayor
In 2013 Putin visited the Netherlands and Amsterdam to celebrate 400 years of relations. It was Peter the Great that came to Amsterdam to see why the Republic was so successful and looking at the canal district he came up with the idea of St. Petersburg. Yes, the Dutch love to inspire the world lol.
At the same time Putin also introduced the anti-gay propaganda laws. Where we now believe that one is born this ways, Putin introduced an idea we abandoned in the 70’s. But then again, for political reasons. To get the popular vote, not a new idea. That happened already in the 17th Century in the Dutch Republic and has been copied now frequently by populist. Like if g**s are a new thing and transgender never existed before. Please.
A minority such as ours is destined to be used for political reasons if we don’t fight it.
Anyway, my friend Dick called that he and his wife Eve were going to protest against the visit of Putin.
Dear reader, at the time your tour guide was not so much an activist but more trying to enjoy and live his life. I had not even read about the protest, my best hetero friend was more activistic than me.
Anyway we protested across the water from where the banquet took place. Making as much noise as possible as to disturb Putins fun. Boy, did we have fun doing it. We are so good at combining a protest with some fun.
Inside Putin shook the hand of the vice mayor. The mayor had excused himself as he had other important business. But our mayor Eberhard van der Laan just didn’t feel like sitting up nice and being a poodle. So he sent his le***an vice mayor. Do you think Putin knew? We had a good laugh when we learned about this. It made me love this mayor of ours even more, who sadly has passed away now.
On Museum plein behind the Rijksmuseum the Mayor now spoke at a big LGBT demonstration. Wearing the rainbow necklace that his predecessor Patijn had worn at the opening of the GAY Games in 1998. Don’t you love these details. I do, that’s history for me.
Anyway ,while my friend and me were walking the grass, watching the Bolshoi Ballet. I saw the mayor coming our way and I took my chance. I thanked him for standing up for the community. Not just words but action.
He looked at the two of us with his intense look while holding my hands. But I do it for you he said.
We had a good laugh my hetero friend and myself, the mayor thinking we were boyfriends. My friend is the most hetero you can find and has a gorgeous wife and 4 kids. And he supports and encourages me where ever he can. He is my biggest fan.

Unwanted Words Poeting Q***r History Celebrate the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ experiences through the power of poetry.
The 24th of May I will be speaking in Pakhuis de Zwijger as part of the Unwanted Words poetry night as the q***r historian of Amsterdam. For seven years I have been given weekly q***r history tours. This has evolved from a fact given tour into an intricate tour where I intertwine historical facts with the life stories of gay heroes, I read from books, recite poetry and tell the story of our community, the gay family and what connects all those different letters.
Some years ago I started giving the tour for companies and businesses as they are working to be more inclusive and diverse. I relate, why I was never out at work and how it affected my career choices. Why it is important and good management to be inclusive and diverse. Enlighten them about the LGBTQIA+ community, about where we come from and what is needed. More information also for the heterosexual colleagues. I am happy and grateful to have many in my tour. Many times it is a first step for companies to show their employees they are serious about being diverse and inclusive.
And now it is time for a new adventure in my passion for gay history. The 24th of May in Pakhuis the Zwijger I will speak about the narrative of history, in history it is important to know who is telling the story. For centuries it has been the narrative of the winner and many times that narrative was white, cis, male, heterosexual. Many times that narrative twisted facts because the truth was many times uncomfortable for them and was not the story they wanted to tell.
Now it is time for the q***r narrative of history. The Unwanted Words line up will be my first and will hopefully culminate in telling the story of a Gay Hero where the narrative will be gay and q***r, during Pride Amsterdam 2024.

Beste,

2de termijn burgermeester Femke Halsema

India has a soft spot in my heart, I lived in Bangalore from 1998 till 2002. I had left Amsterdam right after the Gay Games which is such a precious memory. The community thrived and with so many g**s in the city it was great to feel a majority. In India being gay was in the penal code. Little present from the British, the buggery act. I went to underground meetings and met g**s and I knew I was so privileged. Now this article is out of the penal code and there is an Indian gay prince. This progress makes me happy.
