Solar is the fastest-growing and cheapest energy source in many countries that not only offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels but also equips people to produce and self-consume their own electricity. Increasingly more national and local governments across Europe are recognising the massive potential of solar power and joining forces to accelerate the solar movement.
China is still the foremost country in adopting solar energy. For example, the EU has set ambitious targets for solar so there is still room to do a lot more.
Solar is growing rapidly and is set to become the leading energy source in Europe and globally.
From reduced carbon emissions to promoting sustainable farming practices, solar is offering innovative solutions addressing some of the most urgent challenges we face, while minimizing environmental impact.
Solar energy is also fueling economic growth. Apart from the individual gains and lower energy bills, the primary focus lies on job creation. During these times this is more important than ever so let's embrace all the bright benefits solar gives us.
DHL Group has operations in more than 220 countries and territories, with a considerable network of buildings – some 12,300 locations - worldwide. As a part of its sustainability strategy, and in line with its mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, DHL Group leverages the latest green technologies to have carbon-neutral buildings across its businesses worldwide.
One of the key factors is the integration of solar power. Given the substantial rooftop space of large terminal and warehouse buildings, they can accommodate significant solar power installations, enabling DHL to maximize its usage across properties.
"When you have a reliable partner and a solar plant built with quality equipment, owning it becomes relatively maintenance-free for us. Solnet Group conducts maintenance once or twice a year. We monitor and report the system's output ourselves, and Solnet Group handles the maintenance and monitors panel-level operations. Integrating the production view was also effortlessly done", says Jussi Jylhä, Infrastructure Manager, DHL Express (Finland) Oy.
After this project, Solnet Group won two more projects for DHL. Read why:

DHL's strategy supports the transition to solar power As a part of its sustainability strategy, and in line with its mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, DHL Group leverages the latest green technologies to have carbon neutral buildings across its businesses worldwide. One of the key factors is integration of solar power.
Solar energy is currently the cheapest energy form in the world. It is also sustainable and renewable. So no wonder the world will likely achieve 2 TW of solar installed this year, after reaching 1 TW in 2022, and might reach the annual TW-level installations already in 2028.
Also, the Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Investment (WEI) 2024 report shows investment in solar PV in 2023 surpassed all other energy sources combined. A great reason to enjoy all the benefits the sun gives us this summer; a lot of good energy and lightness.
Solnet Group organized a panel discussion at Suomi Areena yesterday on the topic: "Opportunities of the Green Transition for Businesses – Focus from Production to Demand Flexibility, and Market Mechanisms."
The discussion featured Arttur Kulvik, SVP, Solnet Group; Ann-Christin Pilviö, Business Development Director, IKEA; Ville Lehtonen, Head of Business Design, SSAB; and Jukka Leskelä, CEO of Finnish Energy Industries. Keijo Leppänen moderated the discussion.
During the discussion, IKEA and SSAB highlighted why they have built solar power plants and how financially beneficial the adoption of solar power has been. IKEA has transformed from an energy consumer to an energy producer, using only 3% of the electricity they produce and selling the rest. Ann-Christin Pilviö mentioned that this has become a profitable business for them.
Ville Lehtonen explained how SSAB is transitioning to fossil-free steel production, and their electricity consumption would equal that of 2.5 nuclear power plants (Olkiluoto), so they need much renewable energy. Locally produced solar power especially supports their transition to emission-free production. Both IKEA and SSAB also highlighted the sustainability of solar as a driver for them to implement it.
Jukka Leskelä from the Energy Industry discussed the big picture of energy markets and the need for solutions to balance the electricity market and its price fluctuations. Finland has great opportunities to be a pioneer in the green transition.
Arttur Kulvik explained how the markets have changed over the past ten years and how on-site solar power can be implemented quickly, allowing customers to reap the benefits of solar power rapidly.

Solnet Group has already organized our tenth Solnet Executive Breakfast event in March 2024. The event has become very popular for our customers and potential ones to share experiences about solar energy and learn from other companies.
Ann-Christin Pilviö, IKEA's Business Development Director, spoke at this latest event. She presented IKEA's sustainability strategy and its targets and explained also what role solar energy plays in this. IKEA's values of "Caring for the planet and people" are evident in its sustainability measures. Interestingly in terms of renewable energy IKEA has become in recent years an energy producer instead of an energy buyer. Solnet Group has delivered solar plants to four IKEA stores including on top of roof installations a car canopy installation and also one on-site installation.
"Solnet Group offers a solution that was superior to us from the beginning, as it includes smart solar panels providing additional security. They also offer maintenance services which were not available from others. After the first installations, we also found it beneficial to continue with the same reliable service provider," said Ann-Christin Pilviö at the event.

Germany has become one of the world's largest solar power producers, with a significant share in electricity production. However, the solar power industry has faced challenges, though recent government policies aim to bolster expansion.
☀️Germany ranks among the top solar power producers globally, with an installed capacity of 61 GW and contributing 12% to the country's net power consumption in 2023.
☀️Solar power output in Germany reached a record high of 68% of the entire electricity mix on July 7, 2023, demonstrating its potential during peak sunlight hours.
☀️The solar power industry in Germany experienced rapid growth after the Renewable Energy Act in 2000, leading to a surge in capacity but faced a decline post-2012 due to competition from cheaper foreign suppliers, resulting in the closure of major companies and a loss of jobs.
☀️Despite challenges, government policies aiming for 80% renewables in electricity production by 2030 and 100% by 2035 have led to increased investor interest and expansion, with rooftop installations driving much of the growth, doubling the number of installed solar power batteries in 2023.
