A bit ago we had our end of the year event! We had the opportunity to show our partners, friends, family and fellow TU/e peers what we worked on this year.

The presentation showcased the great work of the Airframe Team, the Software Team and of course, the Battery Swap Team. βœˆοΈπŸ§‘πŸΌβ€πŸ’»

The Battery Swap prototype stole the show, when we invited the guests to press the red button and see the mechanism in action! πŸ”΄

And with this, we mark the end of Aero Team 3 πŸ’™ See you in September, and stay tuned for what's to come in Aero Team 4! πŸ’™

⚑3D Printing is one of the essential prototyping and manufacturing techniques we use at Aero. But to keep the work going smoothly we need a lot of filament.

✈️ We would like to thank our partner Mitsubishi Chemical Europe for providing us with their PLA and ABS filament, so we can continue our engineering journey uninterrupted!

The goals for a student joining a team can vary a lot. One wants to apply his/her own skills and knowledge, others might want to learn new skills or attain specific experience. πŸ† Within Aero we can combine the goals of many members. Last week a solidworks workshop has been given by a member to other members who wanted to learn the software! πŸ’» A great example of teamwork! πŸ’ͺ

23/05/2022

Starting off with two separate teams and , we decided to merge to work together and combine our knowledge and skills. Now with a total of 33 members from the TU/e and the Fontys, between the ages of 19 to 26 years old. Studying a variety of different studies from Mechanical Engineering to Psychology & Technology. Giving a total of 12 different studies all working together in a multidisciplinary team from various nationalities. We can proudly say we are a very diverse team!

This is the first preview of our cargo drone! ✈️ Our drone will be made from scratch starting from the first sketches to building it in real life. That's why a lot of factors need to be taken into account such as weight, aerodynamics and the ability to carry packages. Keep an eye on our socials to see the next iterations of our design!🀩

SUBTEAM HIGHIGHT: Harvesting

Current methods used for harvesting in agriculture are unsustainable. Farmers are forced into employing immense machines by farming a huge plot of land with one type of crop. One solution to this problem is to go back to how nature used to be: fields and forests with a high diversity of crops, trees, and animals in a non-orderly fashion. This however is not yet feasible, as current agricultural tools and machines cannot operate in environments like these. Harvesting project makes the first step towards a green and sustainable future by researching and developing drones that fit exactly for this task. A first prototype is being built which will be able to detect and pick cherries by multiple computer vision techniques. The goal is to demonstrate a drone that can take off and keep a certain distance from the tree autonomously and find and point to a single cherry within the tree.

SUBTEAM HIGHLIGHT: Battery-Swap

In the battery-swap team we focus on creating a compact, light, efficient and fast swapping mechanism which can be mounted on a drone to make mid-air battery-swapping a possibility. In the coming months we will research and prototype several aspects of this system. We have several subprojects within the team concerned with the design of the battery packs, the embedded system which controls all parts, interlocking system between the drones, drone-to-drone communication and last but not least the swapping mechanism itself. Having so many aspects to take into account results in many challenges but the main concerns are those always present when designing drones, size and weight! For this year we are planning on designing a stand-alone system which integrates all the previously mentioned subprojects as a proof of concept.

Aviation is a big factor when it comes to pollution. A single flight from Eindhoven to San Francisco roughly puts 2000kg of CO2 in the air, which is twice the amount a family car would produce in a year. Even flying from London to Berlin and back produces 800kg of CO2, triple the amount of recycling for a year.

Most companies focus on reducing the number of flights, but that does not work as the total number of passengers is expected to increase with 300% by 2050 compared to 2005.

Furthermore, just reducing the number of flights won't fix the problem, as 80% of CO2 emissions come from long-distance flights. And these do not have a viable alternative yet.

This is our first concept of redefining flying! Swapping the battery of a cargo drone autonomously in the air by a secondary drone. A long way to go, but ready to take the challenge on.

THE NEXT CHAPTER IS HERE

Aviation contributes to a big part of emissions globally, this remains a huge problem. Around 80% of aviation C02 emissions are emitted from flights of over 1500 kilometers, for which there is no practical alternative mode of transport. Current solutions aren’t there yet or don’t scale well enough. Therefore something has to change structurally. A transition needs to be started towards electric aviation, possible of overcoming the problems the sector currently faces, to empower more important players to embrace the transition towards a sustainable form of transport and aviation. We are starting that transition today.

Aero Team Eindhoven: Redefine flying.

We want to redefine flying in order to make an impact in the world of sustainability. Our goal of team Aero is not to increase the range of aerial vehicles, such as airplanes or drone. Multi billionaire companies are investing a lot of money to increase the efficiency of aerial vehicles or the efficiency of batteries. It might not take very long and we can make us of hydrogen batteries, which improves the capacity of batteries significantly.

However, these remain relatively small improvements on the range of aerial vehicles. Most flights are longer than 1500 km. In order to solve this problem we need to change the concept of flying. A single aircraft will not be able to transport goods or people in the near future at this pace.

We envision a world where drones are interconnected in the sky. Our goal is to create a network of drones that can interact with each other on a whole new level. Rather than increase the range of a single drone, we are creating a network with a scalable range, practically endless. Using this network, we can connect Europe through the sky, in a sustainable way, electrically. We want to create the technology that enables the first steps of this network.

The idea is that a cargo drone, transporting high priority products or necessities, is refueled in air by a second drone. The second drone carries a second battery and will switch the empty cargo battery using artificial intelligence. The cargo drone flies past charging points, created by our network. By creating this battery swap technology, we can innovate alongside the battery developments which will reduce the amount of swaps in time.
