VDL Carbon Capture

𝟏/𝟓: 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰

Phasing-out fossil fuels is a major topic for the hard-to-abate maritime industry and it’s legislators, along the discussions of decarbonisation.
In order to keep a good balance between “𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨” versus “𝘍𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥”, everybody needs to be aware that the same balance goes for phasing-in E-fuels (𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘈𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘭) versus phasing-out fossil fuels.

Unfortunately we cannot phase-out fossil fuels quicker than we can phase-in E-fuels. This makes fossil fuels for the shipping industry a "regrettable necessity" for the upcoming years.

Having accepted this, the next question is: how can we decarbonize ships that have no other options than to use fossil fuels? We have IMO’s CII and EU’s ETS as drivers / enforcers, but no large scale short-term solution yet.

There is a solution that could start with immediate decarbonization, which is Ship Based Carbon Capture (SBCC).
Hopefully this technology will be approved by EU and IMO soon as an approved way to decarbonize shipping. Along with this decision, it would speed up the implementation of SBCC if EU and IMO incentivise the infrastructure for CO2-offloading and the re-use of captured CO2 for production of new E-fuels.
