"POLYNODE II"
By LUMUS INSTRUMENTS

Artwork at Himmel unter Berlin - vol.2.

„The very wonders of our universe are captured by simple rules,“ wrote Stephen Wolfram about Cellular Automata. Lumus extends this assertion by exploring the the beauty of complexity that can arise from simple rules. The installation functions as a spatial instrument.

ᴅʀɪꜰᴛ - day/night

How ancient cultures align their monuments to solar positions and events always have fascinated us. Although summer solstice is still one week ahead, we have contributed this scenography to that phenomenon. Much alike the alignment of Stonehenge at the summer solstice, two monoliths align with the position of the sun during the after hours. Maybe not as perfect, but definitely close ☀️

A picture is worth a thousand words but it this case, they resonate that many frequencies as well. Where hearing and seeing merges into feeling, Contrarium steals our minds.

With the emphasis not only on the installation, but the role it plays within the context of the space and your viewpoint as the observer. When all these things are aligned and tuned to the right degree, magic happens.

In the upcoming weeks we will upload more and longer snippets of every performance.

Delighted to present the artist for Paradigm x Contrarium. An alluring selection of artists that blur boundaries between the visual and auditive arts.

The arena at Strafwerk earlier this month.

Some facts; the circle was 24m in diameter and contained 384 double-sided LED bars. A total of 147.456 pixels in total, giving us control over both the inside- and outside of the installation separately.

This system is completely custom and finds much of its heritage in Eindhoven, as we collaborated with and Luxalight for the development of the controller and lightsource respectively. The system runs at 240fps using for the content engines, and LED Mapper to send out to the hardware over a glass-fibre network.

We are very, very excited to announce a second installment of Contrarium - taking place December 30th at Paradigm in their historic Zeefgebouw —

The conversations to make this happen started in late 2020, and we are super grateful for the people of Paradigm and their partners to take this leap with us. No expenses have been spared. Expect a monumental light installation with experienced audio-visual artists behind the wheel. Details will be published next week.

Ticketsales for Contrarium starts tonight at 20:00 - find the link in our bio!

CONTRARIUM
Contrarium is an audio-visual installation and performance concept by Lumus Instruments, in which they collaborate with various sound-artists to explore the visual manifestation of sound. Electronic sounds and gritty sound-design generate light that travels through space. A cinematic experience constructed through co-creation live on stage.

Contrarium manifests itself as an installation that seeks symmetry and divides space. A massive and interconnected installation provides both auditory- and visual artists with an audiovisual canvas. This canvas comes in a three-dimensional form stretching 32 meters in length, which provides rich and immediate control over our experience of space and time. Seated as if in an operation theater, the audience feels like it’s witnessing the dissection of space-time.

Collaborative performance and improvisation are the keystones that define Contrarium. The concept sets another step into the future with a system that acts as a real-time translator of audio protocols to lighting protocols. Through the artistic exploration of these methods, Lumus Instruments aims to connect artists using different media, whilst safeguarding the essence of improvisation in performance art.

Exciting weeks ahead! Getting ready for / and .

For Herfstdrift we’ve designed a scenography that again uses the principle of a vanishing point, inspired by our last collab at Drift with .acket.

The new iteration takes the shape of a tunnel with an almost cathedral-like proportion. Lights will flash by accompanied by driving techno.

Also: don’t miss our first collab with .slash.ki who will be closing on Saturday 💥

Entering a stage of chaos.

The behavior of the luminaire is directed by an evolutionary algorithm unique to M87*. The result is movement that is inherently unpredictable, morphing hypnotic orbits into moments of chaos.

Images of our new luminaire M87* ⚫️

From the viewpoint of an observer outside a black hole, time stops. M87* is a supermassive black hole about 57 million light-years away from Earth. It is the first of its kind ever to be imaged by humans.

Chandrasekhar: “The black holes of nature are the most perfect macroscopic objects there are in the universe: the only elements in their construction are our concepts of space and time.”

With this series of light sculptures, Lumus Instruments aims to create metaphysical gravity within the space that the objects reside. A point in space where time stops.

Taking a moment to look back at ADE 2021. That was an unusual edition, to say the least.

Covid stuff aside, we decided to make it one giant experiment together with . Sharing the stage with musicians in an attempt to bring the the dance scene closer together (quite literally). And allowing us to take some input from the live sets bij , , .acket & .jpg , .force and .

Its hard to describe the effort that went into doing this last minute. Lucky for us, the fam is always very supportive and full of good energy. Good to be back this year ❤️

Two years went by with the blink of an eye. Lots of time to rethink and calibrate what we stand for. We’ve found new ways to express our art. Connected with interesting people and set new goals for ourselfs. But there is one thing we’ve definitely missed: the festivals

From the start of this year, we gave a small batch of our ledbars a good run at .amsterdam Now its time for the larger installations at a variety of festivals in NL. Stay tuned

Last weekend came to an end. It has been a pleasure to show Photonic to the people of this beautiful city 🙏🙏

Yesterday we have de-assembled the installation and started its way back to Amsterdam. Now there’s some time to visit and have some well deserved R&R after the re-opening of .amsterdam.

15/02/2022

Currently on display at , Photonic is a piece that both explores and is inspired by the realms of physics and architecture.

With parallel lines and planes, it creates multiple dimensions within a floating sculpture that is held together by a structural principle called tensegrity.

It focusses its attention on the closed faces that are situated at the end of 3 rectangle cuboids. One can have a glance into these infinity mirror panels which capture and direct every photon within each cuboid through different dimensions.

With the presence of an observer nearby one of the panels, there is a likelihood of exiting these particles that are forever captured in an entropic word. This triggers a disorienting effect as if the geometry is unstable, but will naturally flow back to a state of equilibrium.

Catch Photonic till the 27th of February at the ,Dansk architecture center in Kopenhagen.

05/02/2022

PHOTONIC one day before the opening of . The story behind this piece is somewhat fascinating. After being manufactured on site at in three weeks, it survived six weeks of harsh Canadian winter and got stored away in Canada. Then Covid stepped onto the stage.

We are delighted to have Photonic back in Europe. CHP Lightfestival collaborated with to give the piece a spot in the city. We want to thank them both for their hospitality and kindness. It has been a great experience 🙏🙏

Now we are finally taking a week off after months of continuous hard work. Its a privilege being able to do what we do, and to work with all the kind and inspiring people around us ❤️

Voyager’s multi-speaker upgrade is finally finished!

As part of the .nl festival, it is exhibited at the vismarkt among others works spread out over the city of Groningen.

We have equipped the installation with 19 speakers, one in front of every led-panel, each with its own digital synthesizer. This essentially turns Voyager into a multi-channel spatial-audio instrument.

We’re still exploring the possibility’s since this system is unlike anything else we’ve built. But we are already inspired by the possibilities that it creates.

11/01/2022

ARCTIC is an audio-visual installation that is currently being exhibited at Westergas.

The work uses sixty-four dynamic light sources, spread along the contour of a pond that once was a gasholder. Together with multiple speakers, an audio-visual composition plays in this elusive place that symbolises the story of Westergas.

The audio-visual composition synthesises the elements of gas, fire, electricity into spatial light and sound. These elements are central to our method for making our living environments habitable. We believe that it's important to find the wisdom in how we apply technology for building a better future. An important shift in technology took place at Westergas, and sustainability became core to the vision of the district. It's a hopeful story about how our city became more habitable and sustainable. It's a story that deserves some attention to remind us about this progress.

The image is our latest work Arctic from the sky. It’s been at Westerpark for a couple of weeks now, and it warms our hearts to see so many people enjoy it during these cold and dark days.

The Gashouder District once was the place where the city of Amsterdam got its light and warmth from. It was the heart of a network that fed burning lanterns alongside the city streets. As an ode to this glowing image, Lumus Instruments conceives Arctic; a warm oasis during the cold and dark Dutch winter.
