Counter-Tourist Information Center

Kom langs bij de Counter-Tourist Information Center voor de authentieke Groningse ervaring: hangjongeren, straatafval en anti modelburger etiquette.

De Counter-Tourist Information Center begon in Rotterdam om het gepolijste imago van de stad te contrasteren met de minder flashy, alledaagse realiteit en dat wat weg wordt gestopt in de spotlight te zetten. Met diezelfde intentie komt het project nu naar Groningen.

Drop by the Counter-Tourist Information Center for all things authentic Groningen: loitering, littering and anti model-citizen etiquette.

The Counter-Tourist Information Center was first developed in Rotterdam. It contrasted the polished image of a city as it is presented by its official bodies with the less flashy, everyday-life reality, bringing to light what is scorned or kept hidden. With the same intention, the project is moving to Groningen.

Rizq Naherta | Project ITC

NL | Rizq(i)-(ta) Naherta (hen/hun/dia), is een Javaans-Minangkabaus transdisciplinair kunstenaar en onderzoeker in Arnhem. Hun Project ITC is een langdurig artistiek initiatief rondom functionaliteit, menselijke relaties en gemeenschapsvorming. Het project creëert een platform aan de randen van instituten door het terugpakken van bestaande ruimtes en (recirculate q***r production of knowledge). Deze bestaande ruimte neemt de vorm aan van een bootleg shop, specifiek die uit Jakarta, Indonesië. In een participatiewerk verspreid Project ITC voornamelijk niet-westerse q***r films die het publiek kunnen ruilen met een q***r verhaal. Project ITC maakt van de bootleg shop een ruimte voor informele archieven en q***r educatie.

EN | Rizq(i)-(ta) Naherta (they/them/dia) is a Javanese-Minangnese transdisciplinary artist and researcher based in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Their Project ITC is a long-term artistic initiative that goes into practicality, human relations and community-building. The project creates a platform in the margins of institutions by reclaiming pre-existing space to recirculate q***r production of knowledge. This pre-existing space is reclaimed and remade from a bootleg shop, specifically the ones in Jakarta, Indonesia. In a participatory installation, Project ITC redistributes majorly non-western q***r films that the audience can exchange with a q***r story. Project ITC reclaims the circulation of a bootleg shop to be q***r, and a space for an informal archive collection whilst also q***ring education.

Espacio Estamos Bien

NL | El Movimiento Estático del fracas (MEF) is onderdeel van Mariana Jurado Rico’s onderzoek naar falen als verzetsvorm. MEF is een alternatief en aanjager van verandering in een maatschappij waar success loont. De beweging zoekt actief naar manieren om haar boodschap over te dragen aan zoveel mogelijk mensen en leent daarvoor beeldtaal van politieke en religieuze propaganda, pamfletten en andere uitingen van volkstaal. Espacio Estamos Bien brengt het project maar verschillende groepen in Groningen, zowel binnen als buiten artistieke context. EEB zoekt naar en ontwikkelt nieuwe vormen van interactie met diverse groepen door middel van kunst.

EN | El Movimiento Estático del fracas (MEF) is part of Mariana Jurado Rico’s research project on failure as a form of resistance. The MEF emerges as an alternative and engine of change in a society that rewards narratives of success. The movement is in an active search of how to introduce itself in different spaces of circulation and how to make its message reach multiple people, using diverse languages borrowed from political and religious propaganda, self-help discourses, pamphlets and other modes of vernacular circulation. Espacio Estamos Bien facilitates ways to bring the project and its discourse to varied audiences in the context of Groningen, both inside and outside contemporary art. EEB seeks to find and develop new forms of interaction with diverse viewers through contemporary art.

Het Meersoortig Collectief | The Multispecies Collective

NL | Het Meersoortig Collectief is een kunstcollectief waarin honden, mensen en andere wezens samenwerken en van elkaar leren. Vaste leden van het collectief zijn de honden en mensen Wiske Heemskerk, Miemel Heemskerk, G.C. Heemskerk, Olli Meijer, Doris Meijer, en Eva Meijer. Ze werken samen met andere niet-menselijke kunstenaars op locatie, zoals met wespen in een tuin in Landsmeer voor de tentoonstelling Verwerelden, of met mos in het Pompgemaal in de duinen van Den Helder. Het collectief onderzoekt wat voor kunst niet-mensen zoals dieren en planten maken en maakt meersoortig nieuw werk. De mensen in het collectief beschouwen andere dieren als volwaardige subjecten en actoren, met hun eigen waardigheid en perspectief op het leven. In hun werk zullen ze samen met niet-mensen de antropocentrische kijk op het leven in de kunstwereld en daarbuiten zoveel mogelijk ondermijnen.

EN | The Multispecies Collective is an art collective in which dogs, humans, and other creatures collaborate and learn from each other. Permanent members of the collective include the dogs and humans Olli Meijer, Doris Meijer, Eva Meijer, Wiske Heemskerk, Miemel Heemskerk, and G.C. Heemskerk. They collaborate with other non-human artists on-site, such as with wasps in a garden in Landsmeer for the exhibition 'Verwerelden,' or with moss in the Pompgemaal in the dunes of Den Helder. The collective investigates what kind of art animals and plants make, and creates new multispecies works of art. The humans in the collective acknowledge other animals as subjects who have their own agency and dignity, and their own perspective on life. In our work, we aim to undermine the anthropocentric world view that currently exists in the art world and beyond as much as possible, together with non-humans.

De monumentale weeframen/grassculpturen van Trudy Oosterhuis zijn op het grasland te bekijken. Daarnaast is er live muziek door Willie Darktrousers en wordt de film getoond van het project 53°18’41.8″N 6°26’11.6″E waar de patronen van slenken in het gras zijn gezeisd door de zeisbrigade van Stichting Landschapsbeheer.

NL | Het eerste deel van Trudy Oosterhuis haar werk 53°18’41.8”N 6°26’11.6”E is afgelopen weekend gelukt! Met mankracht creëer je een monumentaal werk dat boven menselijke maat uitstijgt. De drone opnames van Clever video maken dit groots zichtbaar. En dankzij de zeisers van Stichting Landschapsbeheer zijn de voormalige slenkvormen en zeearmen uit 8e eeuw tevoorschijn gekomen!

Trudy heeft een tiental hoge weeframen op het Grasland uitgezet; met het gemaaide gras en riet gaat zij de komende twee weken weefsculpturen maken. Met de opstelling van haar weeframen speelt ze in op de zichtlijnen en perspectieven van het omringende Ezinger landschap.

Met Strovlechtwerk sessies doe je mee aan het realiseren van de rurale Gesamtkunstwerken en leer je verschillende vaardigheden. Lunch door kunstenaar Suzanne Bernhardt.

EN| The first part of Trudy Oosterhuis’ work 53°18’41.8”N 6°26’11.6”E was successful last weekend! With manpower, you can create a monumental work that transcends the human scale. The drone recordings of Clever video make this very visible. And thanks to the scythes of the Landscape Management Foundation, the former rift shapes and estuaries from the 8th century have emerged!

Trudy has set up a big looms on Grasland; Over the next two weeks, she will be making weaving sculptures with the mowed grass and reeds. With the arrangement of her looms, she responds to the sightlines and perspectives of the surrounding Ezinger landscape.

NL | Philipp Kolmann (1989) studeerde Industrial Design in Ferlach (AT) en volgde de richting FoodnonFood aan de Design Academy in Eindhoven. In zijn ontwerppraktijk kijkt hij naar microben, schimmels, dieren en planten als samenwerkers.

Suzanne Bernhardt (1988) heeft aan de Rietveld Academie en aan de Jan van Eyck Academie gestudeerd. Haar werk richt zich altijd op specifieke locaties. Veldwerk, materiële experimenten en immateriële herinneringen van mensen vormen de fundamentele basis.

Suzanne en Philipp maken o.a. drankjes van het Ezinger gras die je kunt proeven tijdens het Oogstfeest 🔻

EN | Philipp Kolmann (1989) studied Industrial Design in Ferlach (AT) and studied FoodnonFood at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In his design practice, he looks at microbes, fungi, animals and plants as collaborators.

Suzanne Bernhardt (1988) studied at the Rietveld Academy and the Jan van Eyck Academy. Her work always focuses on specific locations. Fieldwork, material experiments and immaterial memories of people form the fundamental basis.

Suzanne and Philipp will make drinks of the grass from Ezinge (among other things) that you can taste during the Harvest Festival🔻

NL | Trudy Oosterhuis (1987) is afgestudeerd aan Academie Minerva 2017. Het landschap is haar atelier – de materialen die daar aanwezig zijn, vormen het uitgangspunt van de werken die zij maakt. Ze zoekt naar het spanningsveld tussen organisch en geometrisch, heden en verleden, creëren en conserveren, cultuur en natuur, tussen mens en landschap. Van het gemaaide gras van Grasland Ezinge maakt zij monumentale weefsculpturen. Werk hieraan mee in het weekend van 27 + 28 juli 🔻

EN | Trudy Oosterhuis (1987) graduated from Minerva Academy in 2017. The landscape is her studio – the materials that are present in nature, form the starting point of her work. Time for celebration! 🎉 For the upcoming 4 years, SIGN will receive Kunstpodium Basis from Mondriaan Fund. Kunstpodium Basis is for professional contemporary visual art institutions with a relevant artistic and substantive programme. This means SIGN will receive € 225,000 per year to realise its programme.

Lorenzo Modestini is beeldend kunstenaar, geboren in Italië en opgegroeid in de Verenigde Staten. Hij maakt tekeningen, sculpturen en performatieve installaties. Persoonlijke ervaringen met geïnstitutionaliseerd geweld vormen een drijfveer om kunst als instrument in te zetten voor kritische betrokkenheid tegen onderdrukking.

Met dit werk wil Lorenzo Modestini aan het publiek een beeld presenteren dat hen doet nadenken over hun positie ten aanzien van onderwerpen als veiligheid/gevaar, kansen/beperkingen, waardigheid/wanhoop.

Lorenzo Modestini is a visual artist, born in Italy and raised in the United States. He makes drawings, sculptures and performative installations. Personal experiences with institutionalised violence drive him to use art as a tool for critical engagement against oppression.

With this artwork he aims to challenge the role and position of the viewer and make them reflect on their positionality — their relationship to safety/danger, opportunity/restrictions, dignity/despair.

At zoSIGN, six graduates of the bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts present their work: Kaja Manthei, Maya Rodenburg-Broido, Kat Keienburg, Antonio Todorov, An Ye Zhi de Jong, Ellemieke Meijers.

In de tentoonstelling ‘Concepts of Me’ presenteert Nelly Dansen haar nieuwste film ‘Good C**kBad C**k vol 1’. Deze film is gemaakt tijdens een werkperiode in SIGN en is gebaseerd op een vooroordeel-en rolbevestigende confrontatie met de douane van Las Vegas.

In the exhibition ‘Concepts of Me’ at SIGN Nelly Dansen presents her latest film ‘Good C**kBad C**k vol 1’. This film is made during the working period at SIGN and is based on a prejudice- and role-affirming confrontation with Las Vegas customs.

Afgelopen maart bouwde kunstenaar SANNY (Lelystad, 1998) samen met Ayşen Kaptanoğlu en Nelly Dansen een maand lang aan een tentoonstelling in galerie sign. Voor de tweede editie van het KUNST. magazine interviewden we SANNY, die op dat moment nog volop in de voorbereidingen van haar expositie zat. “Ik probeer in mijn werk een manier te vinden om dingen die confronterend zijn en niet per se leuk, om te buigen naar iets wat wél leuk is.”

A year ago the two artists and .olivier.arts embarked on a journey from SIGN to Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm. They decired to walk there, about 6-7 hours each day, to investigate whether an experience can function as an object.

A year after their departure (16th of februari) they decided to walk 18km and record their conversation. You can read this stream of consciousness in Dutch on the website of BK Informatie, or read some snippets via this post.
