HUMANS OF ITESS | "Hi! I’m Isabella and I’m from Brazil – I think these two pieces of information cover a good part of my identity. I moved to the Netherlands in 2019 when I decided to study at ITESS and start a new professional path. I would like to focus my writing here in my perception of the huge gap that separates the country that I am from and the one that I’m living in now. I have travelled around a bit and lived in a few different places, but this is the first time that I feel what it is to live in a highly developed nation – cold and rainy too. Funny thing is that it doesn’t make me want to leave Brazil for good, instead it inflates my idealistic being as to go back to my messy, beautiful and exploited birthplace with some of the best references that I know of. All the bike lanes, the massive use of bicycles, the public transportation, the quality of life in general as to housing, education, health, rights. I don’t speak any Dutch and yet it doesn’t really affect my routine. (The dwelling mice are less of my taste, I prefer cockroaches). Just like Brazil, there are many nations in the world that could benefit from such standards. Of course, different nations mean different cultures, and probably not all the Dutch standards fit every country. But in terms of references, it is beautiful to imagine how Brazil and other developing countries could thrive with some improvements that should be just obvious." Isabella Tolomeotti, second year student

Dr. Shannon will talk about the online teaching practicum during the Wisconsin project at a free COBIS webinar. She will share data collected from the experience and afterwards ITESS student teachers will discuss ideas for future application. NHL Stenden University is one of COBIS' ITT partners. If you want to participate you can sign up at COBIS
In this webinar, participants will:
• Learn about a virtual blended/hybrid learning project that they may be able to implement in their own school or setting.
• Consider how virtual blended/hybrid learning experiences with student teachers joining in with Secondary School students may enhance cultural intelligence and global mindedness.
• Grow professionally as they hear how other professionals have grappled with similar challenges in the blended/hybrid learning environment and now can offer some “hot tips” to others.

HUMANS OF ITESS | "Where do you see yourself in 15 years from now? This is a question I asked myself 4 years ago, upon realising that I was not happy while studying Business Economics. I looked at which elements of life brought me joy, and I became aware that I wanted to become a teacher. Once ITESS crossed my path, I was immediately sold, and I decided to enrol for the first cohort of the programme ever. Other than the programme itself, ITESS has provided the opportunity for me to get involved in the world of international education in a much broader way than I expected. I was fortunate enough to attend two ECIS conferences as a volunteer, greatly enhancing my personal network. As an older student, I think it is great that ITESS can provide these experiences, as they gave me a much clearer picture of where I will go once I have graduated. Because of this, I even gave a workshop about supporting the mental wellbeing of your students at the last ECIS Leadership Conference in April 2021, which focused on diversity and belonging. Within ITESS, I have truly found the place I belong, and the diverse nature of our students contributes hugely to this. An international friendship is one that lasts forever, and I can only be grateful for the friendships I have formed within ITESS (and because of it). My vision for the future is aimed at being involved with curriculum design, which I experienced small scale within the programme committee of International Teacher Education. These experiences have given me a clearer idea about who I am, and what I want in life." Thom Nijstad, third year student, chair ITE programme committee, UPC member, Committee Management and control

HUMANS OF ITESS | "My parents really enjoy travelling and I have been very lucky to discover many countries when I was young. Two memories I particularly cherish were from a trip to Egypt and Jordan when I was fifteen. The first one is when we discovered the library of the Mount Sinai Monastery. I have always been fascinated by books and this was the most impressive library I had ever seen. You have to imagine being in the middle of a vast and magnificent desert and entering a room full of old manuscripts. I have read later that the library has the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts in the world, outnumbered only by the Vatican Library. What also struck me at the time was the look of the monk who showed us the library : it was filled with incredible joy and curiosity. My second memory is an interaction we had with two children in the Wadi Rum desert. We travelled with a small group of French people and we were camping in the desert for a few days. As we made dinner one evening, two young children were curious and joined us. They probably lived closed by and were about ten years old. One woman in our group could speak Arabic and she helped my brother and I to have a conversation with the two young children. I asked them what they liked doing and she translated my question to them. They did not seem to understand so I tried to give examples : biking, cooking… I think I also mentioned going to the movies, but I do not think this helped them to answer my question… One of the children simply answered : “I like being happy”." Delphine Robache, lecturer in Educational Studies
Do you want to enrol in our study programme? Well tell you all about it! You might want to hurry up; the first deadline for Non-EU students is 31 May! For EU students the deadline is 15 August. More information can be found on the website of NHLStenden.

HUMANS OF ITESS | "5 Years ago, I would have never thought that I would be where I am now. The start of my journey was challenging. Leaving my home country and family because of the war was one of the most difficult and scary things I had to do. Starting all over again was a whole other challenge. However, this experience has opened so many doors to me and provided me with endless opportunities. “Making the best out of any situation” was my mindset and discovering myself was my goal. Living in a new country allowed me to meet new, wonderful people who soon became family to me, and discover myself as an international person. Therefore, I have decided to combine the international factor with my passion in teaching. ITESS provided me with the chance to pursue my dream in becoming an international teacher. I was able to go on multiple Teaching Practices in different international schools in different countries. This gave me the chance to experience different cultures and different parts of the world. Looking back at how far I have come, I can see that I am living the life that I could have never dreamed of, and the adventure is still right ahead." Sidra Haidari, second year student

So proud of ITESS student Douwe Dooper in this presentation today from his apartment in the Netherlands to a live “Social Justice”class In Wisconsin. Provoking critical thinking and open discussions with phenomenological questions about our humanity. Thank you Kristi Ruggles for opening your classroom for this opportunity. It’s inspiring to observe this degree of professional collaboration and know that only months ago we never knew each other!
