The past week was so good. We had a beautiful retreat. I am so grateful for the country, the sun and the food. The beautiful Island we were on.

In my yoga teachings I saw how people were locking their emotions in their bodies. How they store what they believe in their muscles, but also the muscles in the face.
Media is constantly telling you or as I would say brainwashing you into how you should be. Because we are all in this, your friends and people around you act in similar ways and also mirror how you SHOULD be.
EMOTIONS from a long time ago are stored deeper in the body and more recent emotions are easier to let go off. Keep in mind that conditioning can run extremely deep.
By RE-LEASING parts of the muscles, you feel more and more space in your body. This leads to more space to the mind.
For example, when I teach yin classes a lot of people can get uncomfortable. Because we stay in postures longer. This opens up the muscles and the fascia in a gentle way. If you are new to this can make you feel uncomfortable. Your mind starts to wander, it goes to yesterday, it goes to last year, it starts wandering. The body wants to release the build up emotions.
Teachers can sometimes say, try to think of nothing. The mind wants to think, like the heart wants to beat. Thinking of nothing has not been something that ever has worked for me. What I do find feasible is that we can let the thoughts fade away and not push them away. Go to your breath or catch your heart beat. But always give your mind the space to come back later. Only not at this moment.
So when you are in a posture, give your mind space to wander and ask your mind to let go for this moment. Like clouds passing. Giving your mind the freedom not to judge your own thoughts. Because every thought is welcome. Even the bad ones. And that there is enough time to think. Only not this moment.

Most of us have been taught to hide our feelings in some form or another. Some were literally taught, like for guys ‘don’t cry’, and for girls: 'be nice’. Every culture and family system looks at emotions in different ways and even what is acceptable. What is more masculine or yang or what is more feminine and more yin. We all carry a yin and a yang within us. In our world it is more acceptable to be more yang. Our patriarchal system has moulded us all to rank being in charge, having focus, going for a goal and independence as preferable personality trades.
All this makes us and how our emotions develop to whiner are.
What I see in my coaching is that everybody has some way to hide their true core. Layers of emotions, like calluses on their body. Between the ages of 0-7 and even in ages after that we learn behaviour which we think is acceptable. My actions were also a reflection of the society I was living in. In my case, my actions were socially acceptable in the Netherlands and were about achieving & working hard. That was my rebellion against my roots.
In the deepest part myself I now truly believe that our body has the secret of what we really want. Follow your own heart and makes you feel good in your body.

In my career I have had a few times where my employer gave me an extensive test with IQ testing. They would even ask co-workers and other people who knew me what they thought of me.
Every test gave me an insight in me and also how the other people perceived me. Almost every time I got an outcome they told me that my mind was non-stop working. And my wide span of control. I never thought that was a bad thing...
I weigh the questions that come to me with a simple question: what is the worst that can happen?
One person that tested me told me, the best thing for a person like me to do is to go do a sport. I asked her why.
She said: 'to let your mind breath’ .
It took me a while to convince my mind that I needed the movement and so I took it really slow and gentle. Because I had been in fitness studios, I did movement classes, but it never worked.
I approach my body as it is a huge lion. If I go too fast, the lion will roar and attack me. If I move too suddenly, it will catch me because it sees me as a threat.
Bessel van der Kolk in his book, the body keeps the score, talks about the emotions that are in our bodies.
I went to my first yoga class, a Bikram yoga class, it gave me enough challenge and the idea that if I took it slow I was able to master it.
So I started once a week. Just very slowly, nothing too strong.
I felt that my body loved it. The stretching and the surrender to what was happening. This was already an enormous shift for my body. I was in a place where my body had to trust and surrender. The first month I would cry sometimes. At that moment I would not know why. Every-time when the class was finished and I stood outside, I would feel lighter. Just a little bit better. And my mind became clearer.

Fascia means band in Latin and is a thin layer of connective tissue, primarily made out of collagen. It is beneath the skin and it attaches, encloses and even separates muscles and other internal organs. The superficial fascia is a soft connective tissue that is just located below the skin. It wraps and connects the muscles, bones, nerves and the blood vessels of the body. Together the muscle and fascia make up what is called the myofascial system. The fascia is also a living system that needs care. That can store and release energy.
Understanding of this system is very important, because sometimes it can wrap itself around us like a chain mall, like the mediaval knights would wear. Our fascia can turn very rusty.
We separate fascia by the superficial fascia and the deep fascia.
To release the fascia we need movement. And this is what yoga gives us, the gentle release of the connective tissue. This makes your movement easier and brings nutrients to your tissue.

Your face changes every time. Media wants us to believe that when we get older, our face gets ugly.
Your face changes, all the time. Keep on doing your exercises and see the change that happens. I like to see it as a growth spurt.
Here a small part from a video that I did for women who did a live class and asked me to explain the postures again.
My face changed so much in the last four years. Sometimes I thought… this does not help. But then I just went on.
And it feels so good to have control over your own body and face.
Some people have more fat on their face than others. That is why some of us can look really skinny in the face and some people have a fuller face.
With age this fat can disappear (yellow in the picture). Or it can sag.
What can you do about it?
Option 1: nothing
Just leave it like it is.
Option 2: fillers
A lot people get fillers in the cheek and get a ‘pillow’ face.
Option 3: surgery
Gettin a facelift
Option 4: FaceYoga | Face Exercises
This option is moving your face in different ways to get the result you want.
All of the four options are legitimate. And it is your choice.
Doing nothing is letting gravity take it’s course and is absolutely a possibility.
Getting fillers is also options to make your face fuller. But here you can get the dreaded pillow face. And what I see is that it looks okay on pictures (2D) but in real life (3D) it is scary.
Surgery is also something, but to cut your face and see if it will be better is frankly scary to me.
