The PD1/PD-L1 signalling pathway is normally involved in preventing autoimmunity. When this pathway is stimulated, this signalling inhibits T cell activity, induces T cell tolerance, suppresses proliferation, reduces the immune response of T cells, and induces cell death of these immune cells. Cancer escapes immunity by stimulating this same PD1/PD-L1 pathway. This escape can be suppressed by inhibiting this pathway, for example by using antibodies that bind to the PD-L1 ligand, so it won't bind to its receptor any longer. However, signs of autoimmunity may be the result of such therapy.
