Columbia Summer Program

Summer Program in American Law. The program is intended for legal professionals and law students in an advanced phase of their studies.

The Columbia Summer Program is organised by the Law Faculties of Leiden University, the University of Amsterdam and Columbia University in the City of New York. Since 1963 these summer courses are held alternately at the Leiden Law School and at the Amsterdam Law School and are designed to provide a general introduction to the American legal system.

Join our Columbia Summer Program in American Law July 2023!

The Columbia Summer Law Program is the result of a 50-year plus ongoing collaboration between three institutions, namely Columbia University, the University of Amsterdam, and Leiden University. Each year, the program is hosted in either Amsterdam or Leiden, uniting professionals and students from all around the world in an international, interactive, and highly motivated classroom. Through subjects such as Constitutional Law, Criminal Litigation, or Litigation, to name a few, the 4-week program enables one to dive into the multifaceted American legal system. Another key element of the program is its interactivity and the fact that it allows you to meet professors from one of the world’s most prominent institutions both within, but also outside the classroom. Whether you are in the midst of choosing a specialization in your legal career or are already settled in your current position, the Columbia Summer Program will surely enable you to open another door and gain invaluable legal insights and experience.

The Program is held in alternate summers, for the full month of July, in Leiden and Amsterdam. In 2023 the Program will be held in Amsterdam. The dates are July 3 to 28/29. Application deadline May 1 2023.

Recent students - and students from many years past - have given overwhelmingly enthusiastic evaluations of the Program. Former students - who are now distinguished judges, political leaders, senior attorneys, business executives, and law professors - participate in great numbers in formal Program reunions and in smaller informal reunions in many countries.

Do you want to be taught by some of the world’s best law professors? Are you interested in diving into the American legal system and studying it from a multidisciplinary angle? Do you want to benefit from an interactive learning environment, while you enjoy summer in Leiden alongside an international classroom? Then the Columbia Summer Law Program (CSP) is for you!

In our first episode of “Let us introduce the CSP”, our team has the pleasure of sitting down with two of Columbia’s professors, Edward Morrison and Joshua Mitts, who will both attend this year’s program.

If you are still hesitant about whether to apply or not, allow them to convince you themselves! Both of them have already attended numerous editions in the past and are looking forward to this year’s CSP (as do we!)
For more information, please consult our website or feel free to email us. Applications are still open.

Our Story

The Columbia Summer Program is organised by the Law Faculties of Leiden University, the University of Amsterdam and Columbia University in the City of New York.

For more than 50 years now (since 1963), students and professionals from all over the world have joined us in the picturesque Dutch cities of Leiden or Amsterdam for the Columbia Summer Program to continue this tradition. During just four short weeks, we will create a community. It will begin in the classroom, where we will explore the foundations of American law. The community will solidify in daily lunches, occasional dinners and events, and the moot court, where the distinction between professor and student will disappear. We will become colleagues and friends, and I think you will discover that we have forged a durable community.

The next session will take place at Leiden University in July 2020 (July 6 - July 31).
