What do you wear when you spend a week in a trench? That is what all first-year archaeology students in Oss have to ask themselves. Here are some tips: * S3 steel safety boots * Safety vest * Warm clothes, possibly at the end of their life * Waterproof clothes (even Oss is still the Netherlands)🌧️ * With any good outfit, accessories make the fit: water bottle, hat, sunscreen, a measuring stick for drawings, and the most useful tool for an archaeologist, the trowel! - #archaeologyexcavation #archaeologylife #excavation #research #fieldschool #netherlandsarchaeology #oss #leidenarchaeology #archaeologydig #archaelogystudent #studentlife#netherlandsarchaeology #thestudentexperience

How do we talk about theories on early human behavior? How can we visually communicate this topic, include evidence, and connect the ideas to our current research spotlight? These are challenges we are working through as we make videos about archaeological research. Specialist in our human origins department use many methods to help understand how certain human behaviors developed. (More on these methods in our next segment!) The practice is tricky because to reflect on behaviors of people in the past is to essentially look in a mirror. What other behaviors can you think of that we share with past peoples, and how did these behaviors make us what we are? Furthermore, what do you think makes a behavior “complex”? This week on Umhlatuzana…. We’re going to breakdown some of their (rather complicated) dating techniques! Still a bit lost? Do we have the answer to the domestication of Dromedary camels? 🔎The Domestication of an animal is a process that in general takes thousands of years. 🐪 What we really see at Tell Abraq is the end-result of something that probably started much earlier. At the moment we don’t have archaeological evidence for it, but maybe in the future the history of the dromedary will be more clear. - #domesticationnation #dromedary #camels #archaeology #archaeologylife #sciencecommunication #research #excavationfinds

It is time….. The “LUFASM” Team is very excited to present our first documentary about one of our projects, Palloures!!! If our posts from last year left you curious to know more, you might find your answer on our YouTube Channel! The link is at the very top of our biosite, and we will also put it on our stories. Our immense gratitude goes out to the directors of @archaeology_of_palloures for their trust in us telling their story, and to all those that participated in the making of this film. Our next video in the domestication series is about camels!! Turns out their story is incredibly complicated. We took a swing at simplifying it for you😌. Stay tuned because this one is a two-parter! 🐫 🔎The Iranian site of Shar-i-Sokhta is particularly interesting for the story of the Bactrian camel domestication. Here they found domestic camel bones, wool and even poop preserved in jars🏺dated between 2700 and 2500 BC! - #bactriancamel #camels #domestication #archaeology #archaeologylife #sciencecommunication

At last… part 2!!! Is it just me or is the thought of the Roman Empire something a lot of us struggle with? I’m starting to get concerned….. We of course had to ask the expert of Roman archeology himself, and we included an answer from 3/5 of the Leidenarchaeology creator team! Now I’m wondering… should we ask about Greek mythology next?
