Faculty of Archaeology - Universiteit Leiden

Fanpage of the Faculty of Archaeology - Universiteit Leiden. All who are interested in our education, research and fieldwork are welcome to join.

The Faculty of Archaeology studies the development of human societies across the globe, on the basis of material remains, from the earliest hominins until the post medieval expansion of western societies and its consequences. Its research makes innovative contributions to debates in World Archaeology and to the role of the discipline in modern society, and it structures and inspires teaching.

Congratulations! Gerrit Dusseldorp joins Liveable Planet Interdisciplinary Programme as an Associate Professor!

‘Archaeologists can provide the time-depth perspective in the issues that we face today. Modelling past land-use might give us better input for our climate reports, for example.'

Story from the field: a group of our students is currently excavating in Aruba!

The group is excavating one of the oldest archaic sites on the island. This site is linked to the earliest waves of migration and settlement by archaic groups from the mainland of South America.

And what's more, tonight they will have a meet and greet with the public to discuss their findings.

Today we fly the flag over the Van Steenis building. This flag shows the rate in which the planet has warmed in the past years.

Executive Director Jan Pronk: 'The Faculty of Archaeology wants to make a positive impact in the area of climate and circularity. In investigating peoples in the past we regularly encounter adaptability and resilience in the face of environmental change. Now let us focus on our own adaptability and resilience as well. '
