Today is the day! ๐Ÿฅณ Will we see you at the Humanities Faculty Symposium?

The world is transitioning out of a global pandemic, extreme weather conditions are becoming common as the world warms and a brutal war has erupted on the European continent, while long-lasting armed conflicts rage on elsewhere.

Vandaag is het zover! ๐Ÿฅณ

Like all other narrative art forms, film can entertain us and inspire us, but also educate us, warn us, mirror and question our most fundamental beliefs.

High time for film to play a prominent role in the Humanities Faculty Symposium!

Will you be there? Have you already seen Children of Men? Let us know in the comments!

Ben jij erbij? Heb je Children of Men al gezien? Laat het weten in de comments!

And our last speaker on the 12th of May will be Eveline de Bruin! Drs. de Bruin will be giving a lecture on song lyrics and what makes good song lyrics! Her lecture will begin at 21:00 in room 2 on our Kaltura platform, of which the links will be mailed through the sign-up! The language of this lecture will be primarily Dutch. The full schedule will be posted tomorrow, so stay tuned!

You can join us from 19:30, and the lecture will begin at 20:00. Sign up now for free using the link in the bio! Very soon we will send the information email with the link of our Kaltura platform to those who have signed up, so in case you have not done that yet, now is your chance! And if you do not see an email, check your spam folder!
Eveline de Bruin studied Dutch language and literature at the University of Leiden (1992-1997) and songwriting at the conservatory of Tilburg (2003-2009). She has done two masters and is currently the owner of Avelynโ€™s Art, Language & Music based in Rotterdam.
โ€œCan you put a poem to music? What requirements do good song lyrics have to meet? At the conservatory, little attention is paid to writing good song lyrics. Musicians often donโ€™t really listen to the lyrics. Most Dutch students in music courses write in English. This includes myself during my time at the university. Still, as a nederlandica, I managed to write in my native language. In this lecture I am going to illustrate this on the basis of a few live-played fragments. โ€œ

Only three more days until the start of the symposium! For preparation, we asked both our speakers as well as our participants to provide us with their favourite song, which have been added to our public playlist on Spotify! Curious to find out what our speakers listen to in their free time? Check it out now! The playlist is called โ€˜Faculty Symposium: Musicโ€™.

The second-to-last speaker of the evening on the 12th of May will be drs. Flora Smit! Drs. Smit will be talking about the modern musical behemoth that is K-pop! Her lecture will begin at 21:00 in room 1 on our Kaltura platform, of which the links will be mailed through the sign-up! The language of this lecture will be English. Stay tuned to find out who our last speaker will be!

You can join us from 19:30, and the lecture will begin at 20:00. Sign up now for free using the link in the bio!

โ€œI did a BA in Korea studies, then went to South Korea to do my MA International Relations and Diplomacy at Seoul National University and am currently a PhD candidate at Leiden University. I am (both previously and now with my research) concerned with popular culture, post-modern societies and, as a specialisation, the K-pop industry (both idols, agencies and fandom). My dissertation will be about the triangular relationship between idols, agencies and fandom and how this relationship can give a new notion about our concept of โ€˜surveillanceโ€™ in modern society. My association with music is that I am fascinated by the fact that popular music can be a powerful way of soft-power and nation-branding, but also that the (mainly) capitalist approach of popular music can go beyond glitter and glamor, and how both consumers and artists also buy or sell a kind of fantasy.โ€
