Importance of Kolam in the Margazhi month👇

The ritual of Kolam is an extremely important feature of the culture of South India, and especially so in Tamil Nadu. During the holy month of Margazhi, almost all houses are decorated with colourful and elaborate kolams. These are drawn on the threshold to welcome in guests and divine beings to bless their houses with prosperity and happiness. Kolam competitions are also held, with rewards being offered for the best designs and drawings.

During Margazhi, kolam forms an important part of tradition. Women sprinkle water on the front yard and draw kolam made of rice flour in the early hours of the morning. It served three distinct purposes. They bend and stretch to join the dots and lines to create geometric designs, unknowingly performing the warm-up exercises and at the same time receiving an ozone ‘therapy’ along with feeding the ants, insects and birds with the rice flour.

Now these mesmerising intricate patterns are available in the form of beautiful 500 piece jigsaw puzzles. Go on, challenge yourself and unlace the interlace with our Kolam puzzle! 🧩🧩

A kolam is a geometric drawing created with rice flour. Its design can vary from simple and small to colourful and complex. Regardless of its design, the kolam is a customary Indian culture that has many benefits to one’s life. Kolam symbolizes auspiciousness and good luck. 😊

Each day before dawn, during the Brahma muhurtam (believed to be the time when Brahma and all other deities descend to the earth) and sometimes before dusk, millions of women in the town, villages and the cities of South India draw kolam on the thresholds and floors of houses, temples and work space usually. ✨

Here’s everything you need to know about Kolam.
