Building a hemp wall - Workshop for the Mind, Rotterdam
In 2015 we designed ‘Workshop for the Mind’, a Buddhist centre in Rotterdam made with, by, and for its diverse community. The spirituality of the centre’s Meditation Room was enhanced by its spatial proportions and by the combination of extraordinary materials, in particular a rough hemp wall.
The hemp provides a continuous joint-free wall, which is an amazing achievement and source of pride for the community who built the wall themselves. The hemp mix was placed and pushed, layer by layer, in horizontal strips contained by the formwork.
Building their own centre by means of a participative process strengthened their community and created an exceptional bond between users and space.
