DE STAAL - Two weeks ago we showed you the 3d-printing progress of our New Delft Blue design. This week we are thrilled to announce another cool project we're designing at the moment, De Staal. In this project we seriously scaled up 3d-printing ceramics in architecture! We designed the facade of the lower block of the residential high-rise ‘De Staal’ that is to be realised in Delft (NL).
The identity of the lower block is robust, contemporary and differentiated. The facade is designed with expressive details and aspires to introduce a new expressive aesthetic to residential high rise buildings, making the built environment more exciting, diverse and inspiring. All facade tiles are generated by custom-designed algorithms. The combination of additive manufacturing and computational design results in a new, non-standard, highly differentiated facade design. We hope it inspires you!
The design of the complete residential high rise is a collaboration between , en Studio RAP under supervision of .nl, for real estate developer .
THE FLOAT #2 - For a private client we designed a floating home that is completely cladded in cork. The solid cork facade with the timber interior captures light and creates a wonderful tranquil experience from the inside. The outside blends subtly with the picturesque canals in the historical city centre of Leiden (NL).
The use of only two main materials, timber and cork, radically simplified its construction while creating simple yet elegant details.
The non-standard structure of this floating house is inspired by origami-principles and folded structures. This results in greater spans with less material than more conventional forms of structure. This load bearing structure was completely realised in Cross-Laminated-Timber (CLT), a solid, timber and bio-based material that was left exposed as the interior finish. In close collaboration with the structural engineer, folds were designed and parametrically optimised for the walls and roof that resulted in a reduction over 2000kg of timber.
All phases of this project have been realised fully digital, from design to realisation. Sustainability was central in this digital workflow and guided most design decisions, in this way the project aspires to push the industry further with sustainable architecture and look beyond the use of conventional construction materials and methods.

Scaling up 3d-printing in Architecture. Almost all 2850 tiles for our design New Delft Blue are 3d-printed. Take a look at the astonishing amount of only custom facade tiles!
At Studio RAP we have the mission to design and realise groundbreaking architecture that’s pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and hopes to inspire people everywhere around the world!
New Delft Blue is a pioneering project in the historic Dutch city Delft, designed and 3D-printed by Studio RAP. This project reinterprets the world-famous decorative qualities and design vocabulary of Delft Blue porcelain. By fusing 3D clay printing, computational design, and artisanal glazing, New Delft Blue hopes to unfold a new architectural potential of ceramic ornamentation of the 21st century.

CERAMIC HOUSE - We love it when a plan comes together! After finishing all the ceramic tiles for the facade cladding of an eye-catching boutique in Amsterdam’s most luxurious shopping street, the P.C Hooftstraat, we decided to lay them out and behold the result of our hard labour. We couldn’t be happier!
Studio RAP designed and produced the facade cladding of an eye-catching boutique in Amsterdam’s most luxurious shopping street, the P.C Hooftstraat. The facade will be composed of 3d-printed ceramic tiles and is expected to be realised in the winter of 2022. By fusing the advanced methods of ceramic 3D printing, algorithmic design, and artisanal glazing, the architectural potential of ceramics and ornaments of the 21st century is revealed. The algorithmic ornaments on this facade refer to the craft of knitting garments, resulting in an exciting design language.
We thank our partner for the artisanal glazing of the tiles.
CODED CANOPY - Have you spotted this hidden gem in Rotterdam already?
The canopy we designed for Hart van Zuid has an eye-catching yet acoustic functional design that lowers the noise for the apartments above the gate. The new beating heart of the south bank of Rotterdam has undergone a complete metamorphosis and we are happy to have had a part in it by designing a welcoming and recognizable entrance.
Besides the design, we were responsible for the engineering, detailing and production preparations for the complete canopy. In this way, we were able to realise this project according to a complete digital workflow which allowed us to keep challenging architecture while maintaining our schedule and staying within budget.
Do you want to see our canopy in its full glory? Go check it out at the Sallandweg Rotterdam!
CERAMIC HOUSE - Who said bricks are boring? For our facade design of a high end fashion boutique on the P.C. Hooftstraat Amsterdam we reinterpreted the historical classic brick in a new and exciting way. The nearly 2250 unique bricks are composed alongside the original masonry cross bond and have abstract ornamentation. These bricks are glued into laser-cut stainless steel cassettes, referring to the original flushes. The ornamentation of the bricks is most expressive at the bottom of this part of the facade. Thanks to our partner, Koninklijke Tichelaar B.V. the bricks are glazed in three different shades of red.
We are happy to announce that all 3d-printed ceramic tiles are completed for our design of the Ceramic House at the P.C. Hooftstraat in Amsterdam! Yes, our robots have been working their arms off to do justice to our design! Now on to finishing our next design project, New Delft Blue | Poortmeesters.
Stay tuned for more updates and get inspired by 3d-printed ceramic architecture.
Shout-out to our operators as well who have done an amazing job guiding our robots through their tasks!
The Cork House - We recently worked on the architectural design of a scalable bio-based row house concept that steps away from the conventional appearance, both in terms of material use, shape and technical installations. Its load bearing structure is mainly made from timber and the exterior has a cork cladding together built up by prefabricated elements. By using our parametric toolset we were able to make massings and floor plans adaptive to a wide range of different locations. Not only does this give us the power to make site-specific designs, it also informs us about the amount of materials used and the total CO2-footprint of the design.
Special thanks to and BCD Advies for partnering up on this amazing project!
