Onze collega Maria Cànoves had 4 jaar de tijd om de tuin organisch te ontwerpen. Veel geleerd over welke planten het beste doen en waar... en hoe je ze moet verzorgen en onderhouden. Woonwerk Architecten implementeert nu de opgedane ervaring van de proeftuin in alle projecten om onze architectuur nog duurzamer en maximaal natuurinclusief te maken.

Last week we celebrated the opening of our care housing complex foreschate in Voorschoten. The project is a renovation and extension of the existing building, preparing it for the future as a sustainable and suitable care living. We would like to congratulate and thank Woonzorg Nederland, Topaz, Ouwehand - Bouwen & Ontwikkelen for the successful collaboration of almost three years. We are very happy with the result and to see the project comes to life.

***competitions | (Not) in it to win it***

A few months ago we participated in an architectural competition at the Wakkerzeelsebaan in Wijgmaal Leuven (BE), transforming arable land into an active residential neighborhood. The quality of housing is unconditionally linked to its outside surroundings and challenges, therefore we wanted to provide a contemporary outlook for connecting individual housing needs to collective social objectives. Together with Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners we envisioned a configuration of different housing typologies within different shades of green, offering specific types of private and collective spaces. The public community building acts as a pivotal landmark at the edge of the site, enhancing dynamic interactions while the entirety of the neighborhood is connected through new roads and vistas of the site and its periphery. Unfortunately we didn’t win, but we enjoyed working on the project and had the opportunity to intensely rethink, sketch, research and propose environmental and architectural visions for the future.

And last but not least we are thankful to our Antwerp + Rotterdam teams!

Just before the summer we had an open discussion with the neighborhood’s residents of our Braempark project in Boom (Belgium). Together with Woonkade Rupelstreek, we promote new contemporary and sustainable housing that enhance active use of public space for social gathering, walking, and cycling. This cannot be achieved without the participation of residents who shared with us their basic needs, current issues, and future desires. We believe our role as architects is articulated through actual discourse and grounded realities, and we keep working on translating their concerns into spatial solutions.

Before we depart for a short summer break (and wish you all a wonderful sunny summer), we want to share some new photos of a recently completed project:

Our social housing project on Werftsesteenweg in the center of Heist-op-den-Berg is complete and occupied. The project consists of a group housing for protected living and social apartments, and aims to encourage social interactions through the collective meeting spaces on the ground floor, or outside in the vegetable garden or the greenhouse.
The building is also designed as a flexible structure that can adapt and correspond to future needs of its residents and their community.

Construction on our Putstraat project for in Rumst, Belgium has begun!

We are very excited to see the progress of this special project: A compact series of 38 urban villa’s offering different housing typologies resting in green gardens and blending with the existing urban fabric.

Last week the Minister of Internal Affairs Annelies Verlinden opened our project Site Serneels in Herenthout, Belgium. The new technical services of the municipality and the new fire station are now finally in use!

New photos of our Ankerhofke project in Serskamp for SHM Eigen Dak!

Integrating 21 new homes within local urban tissue in two compact but very diverse buildings.

The cross opening of the first building provides the urban character of the project and gives way to the second building, located loosely in green.
The complexity of the assignment challenged our design process until we achieved ‘a place’ where residents can enjoy on a daily basis.

Project KAZ, waardevolle feedback opgehaald!

Afgelopen week hebben we een intensieve en succesvolle reeks van 5 participatiesessies voor project KAZ afgesloten. Bezoekers, medewerkers, verenigingen, vrijwilligers, buurtbewoners, en de kerngroep van de gemeente Londerzeel waren uitgenodigd om in workshops actief mee te denken. Het schetsontwerp van de Bibliotheek, cultuurcafé en de kantoren met multifunctionele ruimtes is positief ontvangen. Wat we de afgelopen tijd hebben opgehaald zullen we de komende weken verwerken in het voorontwerp. Wij zijn erg blij met de gedrevenheid en betrokkenheid van de mensen uit Londerzeel!

De bestaande woningen worden vervangen worden door duurzame, bio-based, energiezuinige E=0 woningen. Met deze Off-site aanpak zullen de bewoners reeds na enkele maanden kunnen terugkeren in een nieuwe woning en zal ook de hinder voor de buurt tot een minimum beperkt worden.

A first prize win for Londerzeel Library!

We recently won a competition for the transformation of a fire station into the new library for Londerzeel!
The current fire station is a landmark building on Brandweerplein in Londerzeel, its history and existence play an important role in the identity of the place. The fire station is no longer sufficient and will move to the new site. The current barracks will then be vacant and will receive a new sustainable facility with the library and other facilities. It has become apparent that the destination, a cultural and social anchor point in this location, has interesting spin-off possibilities, powerful meaning for Londerzeel.

Firstly, a happy new year from everyone here at Woonwerk!

Just before the Christmas holidays we received the fantastic news that 3 of our projects received a considerable amount of subsidies for the 'Call innovative projects' (Oproep innovatieve projecten) of Wonen in Vlaanderen for Housing Corporations KANVAZ woonmaatschappij en Goed Wonen Rupelstreek Rupelstreek. This means that we can continue our research into more sustainable and affordable housing. These subsidies will cover the extra building cost of the sustainable interventions and the use of biobased materials in the projects. We are very excited that with this support we will be able realize our sustainable ambitions!!
