GRANITE AIR

A SLENDER GARDEN BENCH IN SOLID WHITE GRANITE

GRANITE AIR was designed as garden furniture specifically for the ‘Amstelvista’ project, a new mixed-use development in the centre of Amsterdam.

The bench's graceful slenderness owes much to granite, known for its particular hardness among stones. And thanks to its lightness, moving and handling it becomes a breeze.

御影石（グラナイト）は石の中でも特にその際立った強靭さで知られ、それゆえこの薄さと軽やかさが実現したのです。

IRPIN'S OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM

STU Garden is designed to be an OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM not only for the STU campus but also for the citizens of Irpin. Gently sloping flowering lawns, like a 'green carpet', invite you to linger and relax. The garden is filled with several new characteristic trees, contrasting with the existing red pines that soar high into the sky, providing subtle layers of shade. In particular, a group of Japanese Yoshino Cheery trees provide an annual 'Hanami' area for the community. Furniture made from local boulders adds a special touch and tranquil atmosphere to the garden.

In the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, in the midst of the Battle of Irpin, the STU (State Tax University) suffered a devastating attack. Particularly hard hit was its iconic main building, which sits prominently on the main streets of Irpin, as we witnessed during our visit in June 2022. Rather than simply rebuilding what was lost, the STU is aiming for a transformation that meets its current needs and functions.

MASA architects and MADMA urbanism+landscape decided to donate the preliminary design of this building and the surrounding landscape, in collaboration with our local partners: Druid Project Bureau, Beloded Landscaping and IRS (Irpin Reconstruction Summit). Despite the ongoing war, we strongly wanted to be proactive in the reconstruction of Irpin.

STUガーデンは「屋外のリビングルーム」としてSTUのキャンパス、そしてイルピンの市民のために生まれる庭です。ゆるやかに起伏する芝生に覆われた地面はまるで緑のカーペットのようであり心地よい空間をつくりだし、新たに植えられる色鮮やかな樹木たちとコントラストをつくるように、この場所に元々あった背の高い赤松が上空から優しい影を落とします。ソメイヨシノの群れはこの庭をイルピンの花見の名所にするでしょう。そして地元の石材でしつらえられたベンチがこの庭に力強さと静けさを与えます。

2022年に始まったロシア侵攻中にイルピンに位置するSTU (State Tax University) は攻撃の対象になり、我々は開戦3か月後の2022年6月に現地入りし、イルピンの幹線道路に面したこの大学の「顔」ともいえるメインの建物の悲惨な損傷を目の当たりにすることに。大学の望みははこの建物をもとの状態に建て直すのではなくアップデートしたものを建て替えることでした。

MASA architectsとMADMA urbanism+landscapeはウクライナのパートナー (Druid Project Bureau, Beloded Landscaping and IRS (Irpin Reconstruction Summit)) と共にこの新しい建物と周辺のランドスケープデザインの基本設計をSTUに寄付しました。いまだ戦時中とはいえ、目に見える形でイルピンの再建に積極的な一石を投じるためです。

AMSTELVISTA GARDEN is the green roof garden of 'Amstelvista', a new mixed-use building in the centre of Amsterdam.

A stunning variety of vegetation creates a captivating tapestry of colours and shapes throughout the year, enhancing biodiversity. Rainwater is collected underneath the entire garden to provide sustainable irrigation for all plants, creating a harmonious blend of beauty and eco-consciousness.

The organic geometry of the landscape, reminiscent of a Japanese garden, contrasts with the three highly linear surrounding towers (designed by DAM & Partners, SOM, MVSA), and the delicate choice of materials and specially designed garden furniture make AMSTELVISTA GARDEN a green roof garden of the next generation.

After the 1st day, we already felt it is very tricky for the future of Irpin if we only focus on the devastating status of some parts of the city. Irpin should never be characterized as being the “victim city”. So on the 2nd day, we rented a bike and had about 6 hours cycling around the entire city of Irpin. Then we discovered these beauties!

１日目を終えて感じたのは、イルピンの未来を考えるなら現状の戦禍に注目しすぎるのはむしろまずいのではということでした。「戦争被害都市」とレーベルを貼られるのはこの町にとって決して良いことでは無いはずです。２日目は自転車を借りて６時間ほど町中いいもの探しをしました。なんと自然に溢れた美しい町であることか！

We came to Irpin to see what is really going on beyond what we see on the internet, sns, or TV, and to see if there is anything we can do about it. After spending some days in this city, we felt it was the right decision to come to see this city at least. We saw many unexpected surprises as expected.

On the 1st day, we have seen many tragic scenes of the city of Irpin. And we have seen how bravely people are living here and how strongly they are looking forward to the future of this city.

ウクライナのイルピンへやってきました。インターネット、S N Sやニュースで観ても分からないもの、そしてここで自分達が何かできないかを探るためです。想像通り、想像を遥かに超えたものに遭遇し、やはりここへ来たことは正しかったと確信しました。

１日目はとにかく悲惨なイルピンの状況を目の当たりにしました。しかしイルピンの人たちはくよくよせず、とにかく自分達の未来を見据えてむしろギラギラとしています。

Another round of tree selection for the UNIT.City .
This time we went to the fantastic EBBEN trees since 1862

There are advantages to selecting high-quality trees from good nurseries. Good trees are more likely to survive post-planting and live longer in the landscape. Besides, If the tree is healthy, you can admire its beauty right after planting.

For the Main Square, we carefully selected the healthiest trees in the best nurseries, which we hope will bring joy to Unit City's inhabitants and benefit the environment for many generations!

During a recent visit to Bruns Pflanzen ― one of the top tree nurseries globally, we searched for the most stunning pine trees for the UNIT.City , and we found them!

In Japanese culture, the pine trees symbolized longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. We hope these outstanding pines we picked will serve their purpose.

Trees are crucial to each landscape design project. They are beautiful, benefit both the environment and the communities, saving energy and cleaning the air we breathe.

In the new MAIN PLAZA, you will be lead through a set of Bento boxes full of many different kinds of trees designed to represent the Unit City inhabitants' diversity and different sides of nature.
