On Friday, 11th of October, the third season of our sound series will begin with our first event in collaboration with iii

For our sixteenth program, taking place at iii workspace, we’ve curated an evening of performances by Nika Son, Roc Montoriol & Katarina Kadijević, and Adomas Palekas, evoking specific listening modes through both sound and image.

default x iii: Nika Son┆Roc Montoriol & Katarina Kadijević┆Adomas Pelakas

Within ‘Scatter’ Nika Son uses multi-channel sound, video, objects, and light to explore how our senses adapt in different states, taking interest in sleeplessness – a flickering between fatigue, restlessness and yearning. Roc Montoriol & Katarina Kadijević will be presenting their performance ‘Plants, Speaker Cones, Solar Cells, Lasers, and Bluetooth Speakers’ combining an interest in bioacoustics and sonic ecology with performativity, to investigate geo-biological entwinements between plants, humans, and places. Adomas Palekas explores growing drones and organic processes beyond our sonic perception in ‘Rehydration: for four electro-organic circuits’, working with electronic circuits and water drops to bridge molecular, electric, and sonic bonds.

Hilde Wollenstein, ‘free version’ composes and performs music for (DIY) multi-channel loudspeaker systems with sampled and field recorded material. Her work is inspired by the ecology of urban environments, realist magic, and youth culture. She categorizes her music as ‘urban folk’ and as such it is primarily focused on the social. ‘free version’ arose from freelancing in underground / self-organized places for music and radio as well as clubs, institutions, academia, and primary schools.

She has created a bank of loops which she mixes live in the context of a performance, using each loudspeaker as a separate source of a loop. To make sound travel, she generally prefers to move a speaker herself rather than turn a k**b. Her self-released album ‘right hand - left hand’ is an archive of loops made in 2023, used in the one-hour long radio piece ‘original material played at cashmere radio, berlin’ and several concerts that followed. The collection of loops expands on a day-to-day basis.

Hilde Wollenstein (1997, Culemborg, Netherlands) currently lives in The Hague and Berlin. From 2015 until 2018 she studied classical clarinet at the Conservatory in Utrecht. Since 2018 she studies at The Institute of Sonology in The Hague, completing the bachelors in 2022, and currently following the masters programme.

Boris de Klerk and Finn Borath: Chamber Piece #3 (co-presented by The Grey Space in the Middle as part of the BAU AIR The Grey Space in the Middle residency program)

Theater and sound makers Finn Borath and Boris de Klerk have been collaborating on performances and installations since 2019.
In early 2023 they began developing a series of works called ‘Chamber Pieces’. In the first installment of the series ‘Black Box: First Movement’ they would set off to compose a piece of music using all the stage technicalities at hand in a theater space. Smoke machines, moving heads, and fluorescent lights would become the only sound source in the composition.

For their residency at BAU and The Grey Space, Finn and Boris continue their research with a composition for fluorescent lights.

Rie Nakajima & Pierre Berthet in their ten-year-long collaborative practice have been creating various ways to vibrate things so that their acoustic shadows dance around: invisible air volumes reshape constantly, move in the space, enter in the most secret places and inside ourselves.

Eventually encouraging things to produce sounds and resonate by various means: to hit, caress, shake, beat, scrape, scratch, claw, boil, clap, rattle, rock, throw, move,
magnetize, clamp, cook, pinch, galvanize, motorize, bow, blow, pluck, heath up, let flow, freeze,
drop, drip, connect, roll, mix, extend, sing…

Active since 1984, Kapotte Muziek is one of the most internationally visible improvisation and experimental projects hailing from the Netherlands. The group commenced as a duo of Frans de Waard and Christian Nijs, and operated as such until 1987 when Nijs left. In 1993 a new phase commenced when the group were invited to play a series of concerts in the USA. Initially, this was a tour with the Dutch group of musique concrète enthusiasts – THU20 – in which Kapotte Muziek would play shows with pre-recorded tapes and slides. One by one, the members of THU20 backed out of the tour, leaving only Peter Duimelinks in the end, at which point it was decided to play as a duo under the name Kapotte Muziek. In 1995, the duo became a trio, adding Roel Meelkop (also from THU20) making Kapotte Muziek as a performance group what it is today.

One thing that has stayed constant throughout Kapotte Muziek’s activity is the recycling of sound. It manifests in forms such as – in a concert setting, they would use junk from the streets to make sound with; in the studio, a continuous re-use of sounds would always be present; in their ‘Kapotte Muziek By’ series, a set of recordings from the group’s live shows would be reworked by selected composers. Over the years Kapotte Muziek has collaborated with projects and artists like Lasse Marhaug, Merzbow, Yeast Culture, Toshiya Tsunoda, Asmus Tietchens, Peter Rehberg, and others.

In the current phase of Kapotte Muziek, constrained cut-up techniques are introduced into the group's music vocabulary, leading to a practice of recycling live recordings from Kapotte Muziek’s history into material for new releases. After three of such pieces for compilations, an entire album came to life titled 'Discon' – released via the Irish-based label Krim Kram earlier this year.

After the group went through something of an informal hiatus in 2017 it regrouped on December 30th, 2023 to perform as a trio again. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the group has set out to play more concerts in the upcoming year, including a special show in the Netherlands, at default #15.

For the special occasion of default #14, Belgian sound artists Lukas De Clerk & Suzan Peeters will bring an acoustic duo improvisation.

Lukas De Clerck is a musician and sound-artist, living in Brussels. His artistic practice is currently centered around the Aulos, an ancient Greco-Roman, double-reeded double pipe, that went extinct more than a millennium ago. The Telescopic Aulos – a contemporary version of the instrument which the artist recently crafted following the desire to strip the Aulos from its enigmatic past – enables him to narrow down his research on the sound qualities of the instrument in which micro-tonality, psycho-acoustics and sound texture are central elements. Several years of improvisation and reed-making has led Lukas to develop an auto-didact artistic output which has resulted in releases on labels such as KRAAK, umland editions / Q-O2 and Blickwinkel.

In the margin of his research around the Aulos, Lukas likes to work with recognizable, almost everyday sound production like gargling, whistling and sneezing. By putting these sonic happenings in an artistic context, a tension arises between the extra- and the ordinary.

Suzan Peeters is a Belgian accordionist, composer and improviser based in Brussels. She extends the acoustic sound spectrum of her accordion by manipulating the bellows, preparing the instrument as well as using live electronics. The improvisations tend to traverse rattles, soft drones and tremolos that arise from the interplay of the accordion and external motors.

Luciano Maggiore is a Palermo-born, London-based musician, whose work addresses the performativity of the musical act, the perception of it, and the obscurity that emanates from it. His main interests include mechanisms of sound diffusion, performance, repetition, endurance, non-human/animal languages, dance, and folklore. With the use of speakers, several analogue/digital devices (samplers, CD players, walkmans, tape recorders) as well as acoustic objects, Maggiore crafts work of dedicated simplicity and, at moments, absurdity, where the traces of the various sound media in use surface. The same distinctive persistence also shows in his rich discography consisting of both solo audio works, as well as in different (duo) collaborations, including his recent release with Michael Speers on which they contemplate the kernel of black metal.

Maggiore’s long-standing collaborative duo project with Louie Rice, also titled ‘NO-PA/PA-ON’, engages in what can be described as 'unrewarding task-based actions’ or simply 'two people in a room, doing something’. By performing (and recording) score-based works of others and their own, they’ve created a space to embrace minimalism, prolonged action, choreography, auditory phasing, unorthodox stereo expansion as well as the lack of amplification, and the use of acoustic sound sources (humming, stepping, clapping, etc), challenging possible boundaries of electro-acoustic music.

Following his ongoing performance practice based on prompts and scenarios, Luciano will bring a solo performance to default #14, which will take place in the Gallery Space of The Grey Space in The Middle for which he requested ‘just two identical armless chairs’.

Taku Sugimoto (1965, Tokyo) is a greatly influential Japanese guitarist, improviser and composer, known mostly for his subtle improvisation style and just intonation compositions. Sugimoto gained attention in the 90s for his restrained, melodic guitar playing, unusual in the world of free improvisation. Initially coming from Tokyo’s underground as a guitarist in different bands, he became a ‘pure improviser’ within many different collaborative settings, associated with the emergence of ‘Onkyo improvisation’ and an influential figure for the developments within EAI. During these years he would also perform in US, EU & Japan together with such musicians as Otomo Yoshihide, Tetuzi Akiyama, Sachiko M, Taku Unami, Kevin Drumm, Gunter Muller, Keith Rowe, Annette Krebs etc.

In the early 2000s, his music became increasingly abstract – all but eliminating melody and featuring extended periods of silence – gradually stripping down his playing. Later, finding in his minimalist explorations kindred spirits in the Wandelweiser Group of composers and improvisers (collaborating with Antoine Beuger, Radu Malfatti, and Manfred Werder), Sugimoto’s interest shifted from only improvising, towards a focus on composition and its performance. Consequently his composition style also started to change, pointing towards various directions, gradually loosening up the radical ultraminimalism/hyperminimalism he had become known for. In the last decade he has been investigating directions such as: works with just intonation, compositions including non-musician performers, and music featuring human voices, working together with the actor, voicist and performer Minami Saeki for the past 6 years.

Sugimoto’s discography is extensive, entailing the many phases of his rich career. Having released works on labels such as his own imprint Slub Music as well as on Ftarri, Erstwhile, Zoomin’ Night, and Another Timbre, he currently often releases self-published improvisations and compositions on Bandcamp next to his remarkable stream of YouTube uploads, documenting his performances in public spaces.

The show at default #14 marks his first European solo tour in more than half a decade.

┆Zheng Hao┆

Zheng Hao was born in wuhan and is currently based in London. She mainly uses electronics or electro-acoustic instruments for solo and group improvisation – currently focused on exploring the amorphous in different sound spaces.

Released audioworks include Harmonium (Hard Return, 2022), Another Time (with Sun Yizhou, bluescreen, 2022), Last Day of the Cold (self-released, 2022), and A Clipping Isle (with Crimson Chaos, 2022). Together with Ren Shang, Hao forms the hardware/software improvisational duo Oishi (). Their debut album was released via Bezirk Tapes earlier this year.

At default #12, she will bring both a solo performance as a duo performance, together with Wojciech Kacper Werkowicz.

┆Zheng Hao and W K Werkowicz ┆

Zheng Hao and W K Werkowicz share an interest in the elegance systems and relations constructed out of concise principles. Exchanging ideas through text, speech and free improvisation, they both play on the edges of interior and exterior, extremes of the sparse and intense. Their arrangements consistently change and can incorporate electronics, mobile phones, laptops, kendama toys and parts of the interior all alike.

┆Germaine Sijstermans┆
performed by Germaine Sijstermans, Leo Svirsky and Marcus Kaiser

Germaine Sijstermans is a Dutch composer, installation artist and musician. Her works combine ephemeral, often site specific installations with indeterminate music, open to the serendipity of location and time. She creates open scores that hold the possibilities for abstract sound materials to unfold and move in organic textures, while inviting a non-linear perception and use of time. In her installations she uses silence, light, sounds, space, and embodiment to create transparent environments, in which everyone present may find their personal itinerary of experiences.

At default #12, Germaine's works Elexen (2020) and Cashapona (2022) will be performed by Germaine herself (bass clarinet), Leo Svirsky (accordion) and Marcus Kaiser (cello). Germaine has been working together with Leo, an American composer and pianist living in the Hague, and Marcus, Düsseldorf based cellist–painter–architect–composer–builder/designer–maker of sound pieces–video artist, for over a decade, with releases on elsewhere and edition wandelweiser.

The bass clarinet and cello duet 'Elexen' was composed as part of a site-specific work consisting of a spatial installation and music in a former warehouse at Heim.art in Neufelden (AT). The trio 'Cashapona' was also composed as part of a site-specific work with installation, to be played in combination with 'Elexen', in the former textile factory TUFA in Trier (DE) during the annual Opening Festival.

┆Clara de Asís ┆

Clara de Asís is a composer, performer and artist who explores the nexus of acoustics, spatiality, alternative notation and the phenomenology of attention. Her work focuses on modalities of perception, incorporating electronics and analog synthesis to idiosyncratic combinations of diverse materials and found objects. Her compositions, mostly for small ensembles and within collaborative settings, juxtapose structural precision to areas of indeterminacy, drawing from an interest in experimental intonation, timbral research and the junction of rational and irrational systems.

Along with her solo practice, she has created a wide variety of works in alliance with other artists (Ryoko Akama, Mara Winter), and within long-term collaborations (Rebecca Lane). De Asís has performed extensively across Europe, the United States, South America and Asia; including apparitions in festivals such as Oscillation (Brussels), Sonica (Ljubljana), Festival Maintenant (Rennes), Sacred Realism (Berlin) and Skanu Mežs (Riga). She has been an artist-in-residence at Experimental Sound Studio (Chicago), Tsonami (Valparaíso), Q-O2 (Brussels), and EMS (Stockholm), among others. Her music is published on the labels Another Timbre (UK), Elsewhere (US), Erstwhile (US), Marginal Frequency (US), Pilgrim Talk (US), Blank Mind (UK). She also co-runs the publishing platform Discreet Editions.

introducing the artists set to perform at default #11:

McGuire & Nat is a collaboration between The Hague based composer Lawrence McGuire and vocalist and composer Amarante Nat. For the special occasion of default #11, they will present a revision of their performance ‘Enokian Soupe'. Their collaboration started in early 2023 and is based on a shared interest in exploring vocality by either fusion or juxta-position of a synthetic with a natural voice. These perceptual fusions are investigated through various phonemic and non-speech materials. During this continuous process of morphing the synthetic with the natural, hybrids of a voice emerge, resulting in a mental image richer than the sum of its parts.

**
Lawrence McGuire is a composer, curator, and artistic developer based in The Hague and Brussels. His work can be considered as a sonic alloy of computer music, sound poetry and various vocal practices that either get presented in a live or fixed-media setting. He mostly produces music under his moniker hogobogobogo. He also co-curates the internet label In Unison on which he released the EP 'pepsi/coke: An Electronic Sound Poetry Transmission' earlier this year, which was premiered at the first installment of default den haag, back in November of 2022.

Amarante Nat is a composer and vocalist exploring sound and timbre through delicate instrumentation and approaching harmony as a sound phenomenon, form in relationship to the transcendence of space and motion as a function of time through the unfolding of a
plurality of lines. She mainly composes for acoustic instruments such as organ, brass, voices, strings and orchestra.

introducing the artists set to perform at default #11:

Theodore Cale Schafer is a musician. After a long history of producing cassettes on various labels and self-releasing audio files, Schafer has most recently released works including ‘Trust’ (Students of Decay), ‘Our Blood for .S’ (Daisart) and ‘It's Not a Skill, It’s a Curse’ (Longform Editions). Schafer’s music often confronts the tropes of ambient, drone, field recording and, recently also, chamber music to arrive at his own style of concrete music—fusing elements of auto-biography, an open ambivalence to instrumentation, and self-reflexive composition structures. Informed by his work as an audio engineer, his work combines digitally sourced audio and manipulated self-recordings to create its own unique fidelity—equally informed by Playstation OSTs, modern classical composition, confessional narrative, and spoken word. Recently, he has collaborated with Natalia Panzer, Angelo Harmsworth, and Claire Rousay, participated in the Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music Festival at the Black Mountain College Museum, and curated the “Casualism” mix series with Retreat Radio in Malmö, Sweden.

The arrangements that his two latest records consist of, released in short succession in June and July earlier this year, feel like they bear the mark of a change in scale; not abandoning the private, diaristic sensibility of his earlier work so much as imbuing it with a charged atmosphere of slow-blooming intensity. The music on ‘Trust’ tightrope-walks between drama and austerity, narrative and abstraction. ‘Our Blood for .S’, shows on its turn works that scale into both miniature and empyrean vistas- big skies and small rooms; hybridizing his penchant for documentation and “minor music” with a clear ear for writing for ensemble.
