Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) is an influential pan-African entity devoted to promoting rights and accountability.
AFLA was founded on 21st October 1995, to coincide with Africa Day of Human Rights. Celebrated for its convening power and its flagship publications, AFLA provides leadership and support to key institutions and organisations. AFLA was established to address the human rights challenges facing Africa and to reform the human rights culture in Africa. It is a culture of massive human rights violations
International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict - an occasion to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, and to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence everywhere.
With years of experience working in rights and accountability, AFLA has appreciated the need to put victims at the centre stage of its activities.
At the Peace Palace in The Hague, on 2 June 2024, Africa Legal Aid participated in a lovely and privately sponsored ceremony of grateful remembrance, convened by Don Ferencz, celebrating the spirit of Benjamin Ferencz and Thomas Buergenthal. Ben Ferencz was of course the last surviving prosecutor of the Nuremberg Trials who departed in April 2023, and Thomas Buergenthal was a renowned jurist and a former judge of the International Court of Justice who passed in May 2023.

Reports Released on Gender Mentoring Training Programme for ICC Judges
Appreciation of the impact of gender and diversity on decision making is an essential prerequisite to ensuring equal protection of the law to all – a core commitment of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Judgments of the ICC have been criticised academically in the past for their failures to properly appreciate the impact of gender and failures to demonstrate appreciation of the intersectionality between gender, race and gender identity.
It is this need for a deeper understanding of gender that prompted Africa Legal Aid’s Executive Director, Evelyn A. Ankumah to develop a gender-sensitive judging series. While this programme is especially meant to benefit ICC Judges, for the broadest sharing of lessons, Judges of other international courts and tribunals also participate.
