Enabling life in the desert. 💧 Water is Life 🌱
is an arid country regularly afflicted by droughts. Oliver Rust's Jojoba for Namibia Trust was founded to support women in dry desert areas to build up their own jojoba plantations and harvesting centres and become a part of the whole value chain. However, access to fresh water was a limiting factor in its impact.
We recently commissioned a solar-powered solution at the Jojoba for Namibia Trust so that the people and the seedlings will never be without fresh water again.
“Water quality has always been a pre-requisite for our developments. Not only does this account for human consumption but also as an enabler for agricultural projects. In the past, the various activities revolving around our “Omdel Dam -Project” have always been hampered by the availability of fresh quality water. Fortunately, this has become a problem of the past.
Working with Elemental Water Makers has been an absolute pleasure. Their proactive approach and support throughout the various project phases enabled us to implement a no-nonsense solution in one of the most arid places on this planet. Installation was quick and easy with results which exceeded our imagination. Thank you at Elemental Water Makers for enabling life in the desert!”
We want to thank Oliver and his team, as well as everyone else involved for making this project a success and enabling life in the desert together. Learn more here:

Considering one-third of Africa's population is already affected by water scarcity, will become more and more part of its water supply. It's important to do it in a both sustainable and viable way, which translates to avoiding the use of chemicals, using as little energy as possible (70% less) and using the unlimited resources of the sea and sun. This interesting article in the African Business highlights the possibilities and challenges of decentralized desalination.
As climate change worsens, can desalination rescue Africa from water stress? Solar power is helping to make small-scale desalination projects more viable in remote areas.
CNN recently shot an item on green desalination that aired globally. Have a guess which organization they selected to visit for their episode of Going Green on water resources.
''Elemental Water Makers is harnessing the power of the sea and sun to provide affordable, clean drinking water to rural communities across the world.''
We hope you enjoy the episode and our latest update:

As the end of the year is approaching, it's time to reflect and look forward. It's been an amazing year with more clean water projects than ever before. We were able to make clean water in challenging contexts, including Somalia & Yemen, made our solutions even more robust through further innovation, were recognized in several awards and received a generous amount of coverage on CNN, Euronews and Discovery Channel to amplify our mission.
We want to thank all our users, partners, suppliers, friends and community for their support.
Together, we can look forward to the future with much excitement, scaling our impact even further to address global water scarcity using only the sustainable resources of the sea and sun.
The full episode has been released! CNN recently visited our solar desalination projects in rural and dropped by Elemental Water Makers headquarters in The Netherlands. 💦
In this Going Green episode on water, we explained the challenge of increasing freshwater scarcity due to climate change and population growth. More than 700 million people still lack access to clean water, of which 75% live in rural communities. These are too often overlooked.
Through our solar desalination solutions, which use 70% less electricity, don't require any chemicals and can be powered using only solar energy, we have been making clean water for over 100,000 people in developing communities. It's our ambition to help 10 million people by 2030.
Enjoy this Going Green episode and join us in solving fresh water scarcity, using only the sea and sun. It starts at 07:00:

Rain is a collection of many water droplets falling from the sky. Together, these individual droplets provide a key element of the Earth's water cycle, enabling life. For places where there is not sufficient rain available, is a necessity to augment the water supplies. We make water using only the elements of the sea and sun as a solution for generations to come.
Within the desalination industry, there is a predominant focus on large-scale projects that feed over 300 million in urban population. However, if we look at the limited progress of access to clean water ( ), we will notice that 3 out of 4 people who lack access to safe water live in rural areas. Together all these rural areas account for around 43% of the world's population. Yet there is no interest from the desalination industry in these small projects due to their limited financial size, tough logistics and challenges when it comes to operation & maintenance.
At Elemental Water Makers, we believe that this is where we can make a difference. In this update, you will find a video of an impressive drinking water project for a community in Yemen. We shipped 7 units to The Philippines for coastal communities, we commissioned a project in Belize, we upgraded two projects in Tanzania and several desalination projects were constructed for Latin America, the Pacific and the Caribbean. Together, all these smaller water users make a lot of water droplets. Together, we can make it rain. Enjoy our full update here:

One of the best parts about water is that everyone is familiar with it. Most of us are also familiar with the general downsides of the process of desalination; it's (fossil) energy-intensive, chemicals are added which end up in the saltwater return and it's complex to operate and maintain, making it very expensive. With droughts lurking globally, it's the time of the year this becomes a hot topic.
We at Elemental Water Makers have a different approach. By energy recovery technology, electricity bills are reduced by 70%, allowing us to make the step to solar energy. By the water treatment design, the use of chemicals and frequent membrane replacement is avoided. And by using quality components, designed and installed for the specific use case, with support available, the operation and maintenance costs are minimized. By investing up-front, the lowest costs of ownership can be obtained, making clean water from the sea for anything between 1-2 €/m³.

The last time was in 1977. This week on 22-24th March 2023, the United Nations organize this generation's UN Water Conference in New York with the goal of a bold Agenda. There's no doubt that we are facing a water crisis. And as water and climate are inextricably linked, the future calls for water action.
While high-level discussions are important for the path towards access to clean water for everyone, it's difficult to understand what these pledges will mean for any one of us. Islands and coastal regions are still too often overlooked due to their smaller size and voices.
Meanwhile with spring not even upon us, the first signs of a dry summer have already made the headlines, for example in Italy where gondolas are stranded in Venice and in the Horn of Arica, with another failed rainy season.
Now more than ever, it's about water deeds. We are proud to steadily continue our impact by making water available from the sea and sun for islands and coastal regions globally. Please enjoy our latest update and have a wonderful :

Even a country famous for its waterworks is not excluded from increasing water scarcity due to climate change. The Dutch news (NOS) and Nieuwsuur visited Elemental Water Makers yesterday to show that turning seawater into clean water using solar energy is a viable alternative.
With prolonged droughts, there is now official water scarcity in place in The Netherlands and measures are taken to overcome this. We already provide solar desalination solutions in over 25 countries and could not have imagined that the urgency has increased so quickly in only 10 years' time.
The technology to solve water scarcity is there: we can re-use water, we can use it efficiently and we can turn to other sources such as the sea. Let's start valuing water together.
You can find the News article here:

Euronews English latest episode of just launched. They dropped by at the Dutch scale-up Elemental Water Makers to answer the question: is solar-powered the solution to the world’s growing water crisis?
Almost 2 billion people worldwide do not have easy access to drinking water, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by 2025, according to UNICEF.
The off-grid solar-powered desalination solutions of Elemental Water Makers are part of the solution. By using 70% less electricity, the water systems need 70% fewer solar panels. This means affordable clean water using only the sea and sun. They already provide water for almost 100,000 people.
Rethink shines a light on the leaders and disruptors rethinking the future of money, work, health, home and mobility.

to contribute to access to clean water for remote communities in developing countries that are overseen by development aid and impact investor.
Of all people that lack access to clean water, 72% live in remote areas. Another community in now has access to clean water using only the sea & sun.
Big news! We are proud to share that the next clean water project for a remote community has been successfully commissioned in .
As a result, the community of Tsifota now enjoys a daily supply of 20.000 liters of clean , made only from the elements of seawater and sunshine.
The water will be distributed at a rate of 6 Ariary per liter, which equals 0,0013 € per liter. That’s only 0,13 cents per liter which comes at a much lower expense than the currently unsafe transported water or bottled water. This small contribution with the purpose to cover the operational expenses of the system and ensure a sustainable business model. Local operators have been trained to operate and maintain the system.
Through this project, several SDG's have been reached for a vulnerable remote community in a developing country, including access to clean water, improved health, resilience and the possibility for further community development. Remote communities continue to be overlooked by development aid and impact investors and we are proud to reach the people that need it most (and the 72% of the global population that actually still lack access to clean water).
