NEW RELEASE – Bilo Thai, designed by boom.type

Bilo Thai is the Thai script companion to Pieter van Rosmalen’s Bilo family.

The modern loopless design shares many of the unique details and flavour you’ve come to love in Bilo, for instance the slightly pointy-eared terminals and wide, round shapes – remnants of van Rosmalen’s initial experiment to draw a low-contrast sans-serif version of Bodoni. (For more information on this see the Bilo family page.)

The moderate x-height of Latin Bilo made it easy to match the proportions of the Thai and its need for room for vowels and tone marks above and below the middle (consonant) height. Bilo Thai aims to capture the same playful yet versatile tone as Bilo’s Latin counterpart. The typeface incorporates circular details that complement the native characteristics of Thai letters, such as Dochada, Thothan and Lochula. It also simplifies letterforms to enhance the cursive elements in characters like Oang, as well as Honokhuk and Chochan. Additionally, the vowel Sara-a features a colon-like form in its alternative glyph, reflecting a style prevalent in many Thai hand lettering displays during the late 1950s to 1960s. These features allow Bilo Thai to handle diverse applications, from large to small sizes, without losing its distinctive characteristics.

The family is available in nine finely graded weights. Alternative forms for Dodek, Totao and Ngongu let you choose between a more rounded or angular appearance. And of course, Bilo the dog came along, too! Also each Thai style includes 18 different dog-related icons designed by Dirk Uhlenbrock.

UPDATE – Version 2.0 adds Cyrillic, Greek and Hebrew to Pieter van Rosmalen’s Nitti Mostro. The Cyrillic and Greek character sets are designed in close collaboration with Aleksandra Samuļenkova and Hebrew with Yanek Iontef.

NEW RELEASE – Jurriaan 3D by Pieter van Rosmalen.

Both Pieter van Rosmalen and Jurriaan Schrofer have a profound interest in geometrical, modular and multi-dimensional letter experiments. On this typeface they – figuratively – worked together: Jurriaan 3D is a new crossbreed based on a typeface designed by Schrofer in 1969 and the original version of van Rosmalen’s Capibara from 2002. It explores perspective and dimensionality in a supposedly flat medium through four design variants of compact, strictly angular letterforms.

The Dark style throws a severe drop shadow, completely filling the space within and between characters. Ribbed breaks up the shade into five lined layers. The Shaded style is combining finely hatched and hard drop shadows to create different tonal values. Additionally, Fill invites you to experiment with layering and tone/colour even further by combining it with any of the other styles.

Although clearly at home in large-size applications, Jurriaan 3D features proper fractions, alternates, ordinals, scientific inferiors or superscripts and comprehensive language support for refined micro typography.

NEW RELEASE – Rigby!

A refreshingly uncomplicated, unique sans-serif? Let us introduce you to Rigby. While other typefaces outdo each other in terms of number of styles, weights, widths, axes, and interesting features, Rigby by Pieter van Rosmalen will impress you only by the latter. It is a small family consisting of four styles only – two weights plus corresponding italics (obliques). A classic type family set-up sometimes referred to RIBBI: Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic. This makes using Rigby fantastically easy.

Rigby started as a retail version of a custom typeface developed for NTR, a Dutch public broadcaster specializing in information, education and culture. The expressive logo by Studio Turner was to be accompanied by a performant but also warm and fitting typeface. While our NTR-fonts were sharp and rounded at the same time, van Rosmalen settled for all-sharp/angular terminals for Rigby but still keeping personable letterforms like the unique lowercase g and e. If these have too strong a taste of their own for your use-case, you can easily switch to the stylistic alternates with a toned-down, “normal” g, e with straight bar, and single-storey a. (You can also access these alternatives individually via stylistic sets.)

Apart from the stylistic alternatives, Rigby comes with a rich set of contextual alternates for better looks of certain letter combinations. Plenty of accented characters cover 40 Latin-based languages. Use it where your standard text-editor font is too boring but a 80-style family would be too overwhelming.

NEW RELEASE: Goldich by Jasper de Waard!

The Goldich series – in science – is a method of predicting the weathering rate of minerals on the Earth’s surface. In 1938, Samuel Goldich found that the minerals that are first to crystallize are also the first to undergo weathering.

The Goldich series – in type – is a typeface family with letterforms that have crystallised into sharply cut shapes. Over a period of several years, Jasper de Waard created this series of five weights plus italics. Thin parts of characters weather away to different degrees and form stencil letters that want to shine in large sizes. The angular display quality of Goldich is especially apparent in all-caps settings. Smaller mixed case paragraphs – and especially the italics – add an elegant sparkle to all texts.

However, the distinct and decorative qualities of Goldich do not mean that it isn’t a feature-rich family. Covering over 100 languages, the fonts come complete with OpenType features for refined typography such as alternate forms for a, g, &, case-sensitive punctuation, and a large variety of numerals, fractions and ligatures.

Use it in your next identity or advertising project, or for signage and stencilling fun.

NEW RELEASE - Kristal by Eyal Holtzman (Studio Eyal & Myrthe)

Years ago, Kristal started as a sketch for a logotype, giving way to ideas and energy that didn’t have a place in a just-finishing, long-term project with limited design freedom. Since then, Eyal Holtzman grew the design into a unique family of eight: three weights with striking, spirited italics and an all-caps inline titling style. An Ornaments font rounds out the extended character-set and language support of the text styles.

As a versatile book face, Kristal provides a pleasant reading experience while giving the text a very special character and sparkle. The acute stroke endings in upper and lowercase letter – almost blade-like – enliven every paragraph. Headstrong and expressive, but still rooted in calligraphy and easy to combine with other typefaces and scripts. The OpenCaps display style evokes a timeless, festive look and applications such as monumental lettering, elegant card or cover designs. They add nuance and combine harmoniously with the rest of the family, or can be be used in their own right.
