Signe Solberg
‘Har sneaker hjerte’ (2023)
Recycled ceramic tiles, glass mosaic, fiber cement, gravel, circulating water, steel frame
120 x 120 x 205 cm
The sound of trickling water from a large tile, stone and glass fountain sculpture resonates in the gallery. Signe Solberg’s pink, white and red “Fountain’ gently spews water from small red glass encrusted slits. Instead of the bursting, frothing sprays of water typically associated with fountains, Solberg’s fountain dribbles and trickles, continuously running streams of water down its sides. This perpetual flow hints towards the feminine body and its leaking of fluids like tears, blood, milk, sweat and spit.
Signe Solberg’s sculptures are on view in the group exhibition’Elemental Matter’ with Pearla Pigao and Mia Van Veen through May 25. For more information, images and availability please visit the website or contact the gallery directly.

Mia Van Veen
‘Ilden I Rosen II’ (2024)
Hot rolled steel, tin, brass, aluminum and acid
84 x 122.5 cm
The two large works presented in the exhibition are a continuation of the artist’s investigation into the potentiality of adhesion and fusion of disparate metals to create scintillating surfaces and flowing motifs. Sheets of hot-rolled steel go through a process of acid application and grinding to create groves in which the red-hot tin melts down from a soldering iron. Metal is treated like paint, pushed and moved around the surface in varying thicknesses like brushstrokes. The subject of the swirling layer of molten tin reference the tradition of Norwegian rosemaling, a style of decorative painting which emerged in the eighteenth century parallel to other ornamental moments such as Rococo in France. This beautiful, flowing and somewhat delicate approach to painting appears in sharp contrast with the cold hardness of the metal. Through manipulating with heat, acids and abrasions, Van Veen effectively alters the way in which materials they are viewed and perceived. The dark steel background takes on a velvet like smoothness while the rivers of molten tin flow with lush undulations. The juxtaposing of materials and stylistic renditions capture an uncanny combination of the raw and the refined.

‘Hva skal jeg gjøre når alt jeg har bygd rader sammen l - IV’ (2024)
Fauske marble, eero markina, bianca carrara, verde alpi, copper, brass and aluminum
Various dimensions
Solberg combines elements from the earth such as different marbles, copper, brass and aluminum in a new series of sculptures that combine manual craftsmanship with modern technology. Layers of stone and metal are glued together to create massive blocks which are then carved and shaped to display the unique combinations of materials. A large void is present in the center of many of the pieces, allowing for air and light to pass through them, giving the impression of frames and the countless possibilities of what they could hold within.

Pearla Pigao
‘Différent kinds of water’ (2023)
Handwoven textile on TC2 Jacquard loom in cotton, turquoise, blue and green polyester and steel wire
140 x 240 cm
Pearla Pigao presents a large hand-woven textile inspired by the ocean and the shapes of waves. Woven with a combination of cotton and metal wire, the textile catches the light, moving and shimmering much like the sunshine hitting the glistening surface of the sea. The undulating flow of waves is depicted as patterns woven into the textile, creating a sense of movement within the work. There is a tension between the hardness and glint of metal and the softness of the natural forms that the imagery on its surfaces invokes, such as waves in the vast ocean. Piago takes a contemporary approach to the age-old practice of weaving, often incorporating sound, digital designs and novel materials in her works. Her work effectively bridges the gap between traditional weaving technique, innovative engineering, and digital processes. Her unique weaving techniques and material combinations result in mesmerizing textures and patterns. There is a continual interaction and translation between the hand, tradition and digital technology in her work.

Upcoming exhibition - we are thrilled to present ‘Elemental Matter’, a group show with Signe Solberg, Mia Van Veen and Pearly Pigao opening Thursday April 25th 18-20:00 ✨
The exhibition centers around each artist’s unique approach to materials and sculpture, particularly in the context of the four elementary constituents of nature as described by ancient Greek philosophers - water, fire, earth and air. These basic elements are highlighted in the processes, methods and materials used by Solberg, Van Veen and Pigao, revealing the interplay between raw matter and their innovative uses.

Congratulations Jotun, Camilla Løw and Bruntland & Krosby on the publication of this beautiful book JOTUNART about the company’s vibrant art collection. Camilla Løw was commissioned to create a series of sculptures which are permanently installed in Jotun’s headquarters in Sandfjord.
‘The four works in this site-specific installation are defined by the architecture of the staircase and the space surrounding it. The sculptures refer to the room they are placed in and share an inner logic with repeating geometric shapes and colors. Bright playful surface in combination with the raw concrete sculptures and heavy volume create an elegant yet strict presence in the room. Part of the sculptures are painted with blue, yellow, black and white Jotun paint, and other parts are left with the untreated raw concrete. These abstract works give associations to color-field painting and American Minimalism from the 1960s.’

Aftenposten’s Yngve Sikko reviews Kristoffer Zeiner Christiansen’s ‘Good luck. Both spiritual and physical; all the way through’ along with a couple other exhibitions in today’s paper.
According to Sikko ‘Since 2020, the gallery has been a steady supplier of new, Norwegian contemporary art with a penchant for a youthful crispness. This winter, the gallery moved from premises opposite the Orlando’s pub in Rosteds gate at Fredensborg to Frogner and Skovveien.
Here, too, spring and nature are present in the exhibition with artist Kristoffer Zeiner Christiansen. Whether it’s in the form of flowers, abstract surfaces reminiscent of undulating landscapes, or insects, trapped in amber and locked in infinity.
Here, too, there are dark undertones.
The gallery itself explains that here we are dealing with magical and romantic realism, good and evil, and explorations into the potential of nature in the painting.
An image has been titled Tuonela. At first glance, it looks like flowers, like a pattern from a rug (woven carpet). But it is painted startlingly dark. It makes a little more sense when you understand that Tuonela is the name of the underworld in Finnish pre-Christian folk tradition. Then you see the green, almost fluorescent trees in the foreground. The red leaves waving in the wind in front of an infernal half-gray darkness.
All spring optimism has now been blown away.’

You start swimming. Your lungs try to breathe in tune with your arms, drawing in air every time you reach the surface. That’s how you persevere. As a semi-aquatic mammal. You feverishly call on Taweret, fabulating on submission and humility. Your skin feels too thin in water. You regret not introducing yourself to the deities until now. Can you submit without losing yourself?

Please join us for the opening of Lene Baadsvig Ørmen’s solo exhibition ‘LOON’ on Thursday January 11 from 18-20:00💫
The exhibition LOON revolves around a glitch, an unsettling event where a body was incapable to connect with vital natural instincts. Playing with wildlife dramaturgy in other species and the whispers from an exhausted consciousness, Lene Baadsvig Ørmen further retrieves surrealistic fragments evoked in steel elements and pictorial concrete sheets. With an underlying glance towards the anthropocentric perspective, the pieces jumps in and out of flatness, moving between the irrational mind and concrete matter.
