On March 8th, Craig W. Christensen, our Geological Engineer & Co-Founder at EMerald, delivered a gripping lecture to geophysics graduate students at the University of Alberta, Department of Physics.

There, he discussed the engineering applications and positive impact of Airborne ElectroMagnetic (AEM) and its use in efficient geotechnical ground investigation workflows.

Highlights of the presentation:
- breadth of applications AEM can be used for
- our machine-learning based workflow enabling detection of interfaces by integrated AEM and geotechnical soundings
- The E6 Kvithammar-Åsen case near Trondheim, and the impact of AEM in optimising the design, timeline, and cost of the project!

Thank you for the invitation, Zoë Vestrum! We are happy to share our knowledge and experience with our future peers and colleagues!

Flying in the face of Covid — EMerald Geomodelling 11/12/2020

Whilst the borders in India are closed and the country shut down due to Covid, we are conducting geoscanning surveys to unveil ground conditions in alpine regions of the Himalayas, together with SkyTEM 🚁🚁

“The challenges were a combination of high altitudes, varied geology and steep mountains. These remote areas are not even suited for a four-wheel drive and are basically impossible to conduct traditional geotechnical investigations in.” says Ms. Anne Have Rasmussen, senior geologist and data scientist.

Do I love it where I am today? Oh yes! says Andi A Pfaffhuber.

When planning a career in real life you will at some point hit a rocky road.

My journey started with engineering and progressed to geosciences, then to geophysics, to innovation, and to leadership. From sandy to icy desserts, from water to rock, from modelling to communication, living in three countries and working on all continents, I've seen many things.

On August 11th, I will be contributing to EAGE’s 2020 career masterclass. You can hear key learnings from my experience, the most important of which I describe here.

EMerald Geomodelling reduces geological risk by providing a seamless overview of ground conditions early in infrastructure projects. Here is how we do it:

On firm ground — EMerald Geomodelling 27/06/2020

Did you see the video of the quick clay landslide in Alta?
Some of Norways most fertile agricultural areas are also some of the most dangerous from a purely geological point of view.

In Norway, national authorities are collaborating with private companies to strategically map areas prone to a high risk of quick clay slides, and EMerald Geomodelling are doing their share with the help of geoscanning.

On firm ground — EMerald Geomodelling How can Norwegians safely establish and maintain infrastructure in the places that are the most dangerous from a geotechnical point of view? You can find the answer here!

Are you interested in learning more about airborne geoscanning? Then this is the opportunity you have been waiting for!

On 25th June 2020, 4.30 PM – 5.30 PM (AEST), EMerald Geomodelling’s CEO Andi A Pfaffhuber and VP Technology Craig Christensen will be part of AGERP’s webinar on Geophysics for Geotechnical Engineers.

They will be giving a lecture on combining artificial intelligence and airborne geophysics for more efficient site investigation, with a focus on three major points:

1: Timing: What is the right time for geoscanning in geotechnical projects?
2: Integration of information: Why is proper integration of geophysics in geotechnical projects so important? How are results best communicated and used?
3: Model maintenance: How do we maintain and develop our models throughout the lifetime of an infrastructure project? How do we maximise the value of that initial investment of acquiring data?

And as a bonus track, the two will also touch upon the big difference between quality and quantity. Geoscanning is more efficient than traditional methods, but how can you measure cost savings? How many major mistakes can you avoid just by having the right information from the start of the project?

You can register for the AGERP webinar here:

Science, technology … and a little love
The story of EMerald Geomodelling is the story of a Norwegian technology startup using traditional science in new ways to see through solid rock, just like Superman. Now they are getting ready to conquer the world, and it all came about because a Norwegian woman and an Austrian man fell in love …
You can read all about it in this story from Shifter, an independent website about Norwegian technology companies in the new economy.

emeraldgeo.com Technology that can scan for the risk of landslides from the air can save developers a lot of expense. Though if EMerald Geomodelling’s founder, Andi Pfaffhuber, hadn’t happened to fall in love, nothing might have come of it.

A visit from India
EMerald Geomodelling has had the pleasure of a visit from the Indian company NHIDCL. NHIDCL surveys, establishes, designs, builds and maintains National Highways and Strategic Roads in India, including interconnecting roads in parts of the country which share international boundaries with neighboring countries.
EMerald Geomodelling is, through NGI - Norges Geotekniske Institutt, involved in helicopter geoscanning for surveying ground conditions for tunnels in some of the most dangerous transportation routes between central parts of India and the Kashmir region.
In Norway, the Indian delegation got an introduction to the Norwegian method for tunnel construction, in addition to getting more insight into helicopter geoscanning.
“For us in EMerald Geomodelling, it is both an inspiration and a motivation to experience professionals travelling from the other side of the world to learn more about our new and efficient methods ,” says Andi A Pfaffhuber, CEO of EMerald Geomodelling.

Congratulations to our caramel guessing winner Jean Hall! She left Iceland with a new set of wireless Bose SoundSport headphones for having come closest to guessing how many caramel treats were in our clear sample tube.

Thank you to all of you who stopped by the EMerald Geomodelling booth at ECSMGE and who participated in our guessing contest. We were delighted to see how many skilled engineers went all out estimating void ratios and particle sizes to come up with their best guesses. For those of you whom are, like us, data geeks, we've compiled some nice statistics showing the results: Guesses went from 127 to 1500 with a mean of 560 and median of 500, Jean’s winning guess was 646, only 58 caramels from the truth (587). Isn’t it fascinating that the mean is closer than that and that the distribution is very much not Gaussian?
