Meet Mai Vo () Writer, activist, lawyer, former judge & board member.

Born in Norway in 1983 to Vietnamese boat refugees, Mai left home at 14 and attended Oslo Katedralskole while being in the child protection system.

She later pursued law at the University of Oslo and earned a master’s degree in European law from Paris-Pantheon-Assas.

With over 15 years in the legal field, Mai’s impressive career included roles at Norway’s largest law firm, Wikborg Rein, as well as the role as deputy judge in Oslo and Tønsberg.

In the aftermath of Covid, Mai decided to leave her legal career to delve deeper into her Vietnamese heritage and address societal challenges.

She is currently writing a book, supported by grants from Fritt Ord, NFFO, and Leser søker bok.

After leaving her legal career, Mai discovered that her skills could drive meaningful change. She became actively involved in shaping a more inclusive Oslo and now serves as a board member for various organizations. We are very proud that Mai is also an investor in AWAN 🥰

The Numbers Don’t Lie. So why Don't We Listen?

At Startup Extreme next week I'll be discussing how we can go FROM PARALYSIS TO PROGRESS when it comes to righting the gender imbalance in venture.

In this article I am also exploring the same resistance of change in the apparel industry, and how female empowerment in fashion is directly linked to sustainability.

"I believe that if women want the power to reclaim our own beauty and take control of the narrative of our bodies, we need to place ourselves around the table where decisions that affect us are being made. Which means more of us need to start our own businesses, become CEOs and board members.

And we need to stop shopping short-lived self-esteem. Because with this mindset, we unwittingly contribute to harming our planet through overconsumption, fuelling the fast fashion beast with its wasteful practices rooted in cheap labour, toxic chemicals, and plastic fabrics."
