NUART ABERDEEN in Juxtapoz Magazine
"One of the great things about the Nuart Festival, and now celebrating its 8th year in Aberdeen, Scotland, is that it is an actual living, breathing, organized idea of the use of public space. And as he so often does, Nuart's founder and curator, Martyn Reed, sets a yearly theme, wheras this year it was a look at "Living heritage." He wrote of this idea that "living heritage is the dynamic side of cultural heritage: heritage which is continuously transformed, interpreted, shaped and transmitted from generation to generation. It also represents the participatory, co-creative dimension of cultural heritage, and is characterised by its transient, non-stationary and hard-to-grasp qualities".

Hera x Banksy:
Join us at the Lemon Tree for a street art double bill to kick off this year's festival.

Nuart Aberdeen 2024 starts with world-renowned festival artist Hera in conversation with cultural critic Carlo McCormick. Hera (Jasmin Siddiqui) has been travelling the world since 2001 painting large-scale murals, solo or as part of the duo Herakut. Aberdeen locals will fondly remember Herakut's iconic but now demolished mural on the façade of Aberdeen Market — an artwork that transformed the Granite City's "ugliest" and most-maligned concrete building. Although this mural and the building it adorned no longer exist, Hera's iconic work has become part of Aberdeen's local imagination and now forms part of the heritage associated with Nuart Aberdeen and this historic market site.
The evening will close with an exclusive UK Premiere of "Banksy and The Stolen Girl" with an introduction by Dr Enrico Bonadio.

Can a piece of street art express the feelings of an entire community and become the subject of a police chase? Yes, if it's by Banksy. In memory of the victims of the terrorist attack on the Bataclan concert hall in Paris in 2015, Banksy covered a door of the building with a stencil that became known as "The Sad Girl." The artwork was brazenly stolen in the dead of night… but who stole it and why — and will it ever be found?

Terrific to see Nuart Alumni Peter Kennard getting some well deserved institutional gallery support, proving what we've know all along. That Peter is one of the UK's most important and relevant visual artists of his generation and foundational to street art practice.

Exhibition : Whitechapel Gallery. London
23 Jul - 12 Jan 2025

Peter Kennard: Archive of Dissent
Peter Kennard (b. 1949, UK) is a London-based artist and activist, and Emeritus Professor of Political Art at the Royal College of Art.

Archive of Dissent marks one of the most extensive displays of Kennard’s work to date and has been specially conceived for Whitechapel Gallery. Taking over three galleries within the former Whitechapel Library space, the exhibition brings together work from across the artist’s prolific and influential five-decade career, offering an important repository of social and political history while illuminating an artistic practice that has continuously countered and protested the status quo.

Since the 1970s, Kennard has produced some of our most iconic and influential images of resistance and dissent. From the Vietnam War, Anti-Apartheid Movement, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and Stop the War Coalition campaigns in the 2000s, through to the present wars in Ukraine and Gaza and his ongoing commitment to environmental activism, Kennard has developed a unique visual practice that bridges art and politics for a broad range of audiences.

R.I.P Patti Astor

Sad to hear of the passing of Patti Astor, a huge inspiration for pretty much everything I've done in the world of street art and graffiti. I'd long harboured the idea of bringing Patti to Nuart, something we discussed together at length over the years but which sadly never came to fruition.

Patti Astor (1950-2024): A Cultural Icon of Downtown New York

Patti Astor, the legendary actress, artist, and cultural pioneer of New York’s downtown scene has died. She leaves behind a legacy that forever transformed the landscape of art, film, and hip-hop culture. She was 74 years old.

Born in Ohio in 1950, Astor emerged as a vibrant figure in the late 1970s, during the golden era of New York City’s underground art scene. With her magnetic personality and unyielding spirit, she became a central figure in the burgeoning street art movement, contributing to the vitality and creative energy of the Lower East Side.

Astor’s influence extended beyond the realm of visual art. In 1983, she made her mark in cinematic history with her role as “Virginia” in the seminal hip-hop film “Wild Style.” Her portrayal of a reporter covering graffiti artists helped capture the raw essence of urban culture and solidified her status as an icon of the downtown scene.

Beyond her on-screen presence, Astor played a pivotal role in elevating the voices of marginalized artists and performers. She co-founded the FUN Gallery in the East Village, providing a platform for graffiti artists and street performers to showcase their work at a time when their voices were often overlooked by the mainstream art world.

Through her life, Astor remained a tireless advocate for artistic freedom and expression. Her fearless pursuit of creativity and her unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries inspired countless individuals to embrace their own artistic visions and challenge social norms.

Patti Astor’s passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to reverberate through the streets of New York City and beyond. She will be remember only for her artistic achievements but also for her indomitable spirit and enduring impact on the cultural landscape of our world.

In the words of Patti Astor herself, “FUN is my weapon of choice.”

LOST IN TRANSIT

RELEASE INFO
DATE : THURSDAY April 4th 2024, JEUDI 4 avril
TIME/HEURE: 1pm NYC time (5PM GMT)
LINK 7/LIEN

It has been almost ten years since Martin Whatson and I were invited to collaborate and create a temporary mural at Tou Scene during the Nuart Festival in Stavanger, Norway. Now, we have partnered with Graffiti Prints to produce a beautiful edition and multiple variations of this piece, titled “Lost in Transit,” which holds a remarkable story.

Nuart Festival commissioned artists Martin Whatson and Sandra Chevrier to collaborate and create a temporary indoor mural during the 2015 edition of the festival. Im guessing that everyone loved it because
In 2017, the festival commissioned the pair to recreate the mural, this time for a long-term purpose in the beautiful port of Stavanger. The people of the city and visitors from everywhere captured images of the mural and showed their love and appreciation for the artwork.

We decided to create an original canvas where the first version got “lost in transit” during shipment from Montreal to Norway. (Where the title came from!!)

And now, we have collaborated with our long-time partner Graffiti Prints to release a pretty cool screenprint.

ISSUE VIII: INTANGIBLE
NUART JOURNAL CALL FOR PAPERS
DEADLINE: APRIL 30 2024

Street art and graffiti’s relationship with heritage has shifted dramatically in recent years. While earlier approaches were limited to considering vandalism at heritage sites, contemporary understandings position graffiti and street art as forms of alternative cultural heritage in and of themselves – with clear aesthetic, political, social and historical value. And as MacDowall (2019) points out, the proliferation of urban artforms on digital platforms have both accelerated and complicated this process of heritagisation.

We seek submissions that productively engage with the notion of street art and graffiti as forms of living heritage, and which critically consider the range of issues raised by the heritagisation of street art and graffiti and attempts to safeguard, document and archive, relocate, preserve and restore, and curate and manage these unruly forms of art.

Deadline for submissions: April 30, 2024

«Det kommer trolig intet nytt figurativt kunstopprør» – Billedkunst 23/01/2024

An interesting case that relates a little to the post made yesterday and confirms the bubble of privilige and if not too unkind, ignorance, in the Norwegian art scene. It's like the global revolution in Street and Urban Art simply doesn't pe*****te into this world. Just a few quotes from the article....There is remarkably little to be found, although there is hardly any Norwegian contemporary artwork that has received more international media attention than this particular sculpture in recent years…. (Pøbel, Whatson, Dolk, Afk and many others).I still believe that it could have been positive for the field and society's involvement in the visual arts to discuss these basic questions, not least to investigate whether there isn't an untapped interest in art that could create new thinking... (hello, waves)

The closest we get to a movement with popular appeal is probably the contributions from the Waste Ombudsman... (hello, street art).It is not obvious that any rebellion of this kind will succeed in art genres other than architecture....(it already has)

Den store tålmodighetsprøven 22/01/2024

An interesting discussion taking place in Klassekampen regarding who gets to decide who receives visual arts funding and therefor define the direction of the field and what "good" art is.

The analogies with a car and football make sense in a kind of lowest common denominator defense, but fall apart quite quickly when given any serious thought. You wouldn't have a generic mechanic working on a ferrari for example, or doing body work, interiors or any specialist work, or for that matter working on the many other forms and modes of transport. As for football, this also takes many forms, from street football, a kick around or other serious forms of "play" involving a ball. The argument against art practioners having sole responsibility for decision making in visual arts funding is just this, that the field is now far broader than the narrow linear art historical narrative taught in art schools and now requires a different approach and skill set if the field is to be truly represented. Committee members for the distribution of Music funding for example, generally don't have degrees and masters in Music but are drawn from a much broader spectrum of the music "field" including users and industry professionals as well as performers.

To quote Banksy "Visual Art is not like other culture because its success is not made by its audience. We, the public, fill concert halls and cinemas every day. We read novels by the millions and buy records by the billions. We, the people, affect the making, the taste and the quality of our culture. The Art we look at, however, is made by only a select few. A small group create, promote, purchase, exhibit and decide the success of Art. Not more than 5000 people in the world have any real say. When you go to an Art gallery or Art museum you are simply a tourist waving flags at a parade. A parade where the winner was decided without you"

Den store tålmodighetsprøven «Den store tålmodighetsprøven», kaller Anna Serafima Svendsen Kvam om å gjengkjenne kvalitet, enten det dreier seg om kunst, håndverk, idrett, formidling eller matlaging.

The Bethlehem Project Ceramics 19/01/2024

HANDMADE IN BETHLEHEM
By supporting these incredible women and purchasing their products, we are collectively taking action to build a brighter future where humanity shines.

Originally planned for a March launch, we've brought forward the release of our latest venture – The Bethlehem Project. In light of the current circumstances in Bethlehem, which has always relied on tourism, this initiative becomes vital. It aims to provide women with the means to support their families and communities during a time of horror and devastation.

The Bethlehem Project features ceramics adorned with hand-painted traditional Palestinian patterns that will aid women seeking refuge from the storms of war, violence, poverty, human trafficking, and oppression. We see these pieces as symbols of strength, hope, and the enduring power of love.
