Last week, our scientist, Dr. Shiva Devkota, delivered a captivating presentation (hybrid) at the Western Colorado Mycological Association in the USA! He brilliantly shared insights into the Nepalese perspective on mushrooms, igniting curiosity and enthusiasm among attendees!
Following the presentation, GPAST is thrilled to announce plans for collaboration with local stakeholders in Nepal. Together, we'll be embarking on mushroom exploration, documenting Indigenous Local Knowledge (ILK), and implementing safety programs for the upcoming mushrooming season (June β September 2024)!

Recap: Scientific Writing Workshop Success!
Last month, on Poush 12-13, 2080 (December 28-29, 2023), our Scientific Writing Workshop brought together Master's students for an enriching journey into precision and clarity in scientific communication.
What participants experienced:
Module 1: Explored key Scientific Writing Topics, including Literature Review, Abstract Writing, Proposal Writing, Thesis Writing, and Manuscript Writing.
Module 2: Dived into the ABT (And, But, Therefore) Theory for effective storytelling in research.
Module 3: Navigated the world of Journals, covering the Peer Review Process, Journal Indexing and Rankings, and awareness about Predatory Journals.
Module 4: Delved into Other Essentials of Research Writing, emphasizing Good Writing Skills and Publication Ethics.

We awarded a Master's thesis grant to Jenisha Bhattarai for her pioneering research at Himalaya Eye Hospital, Pokhara!
Jenisha's groundbreaking work delves into the assessment of cup disc parameters among the Tibeto-Nepalese population, a vital step in diagnosing glaucoma. Her study aims to define both glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous parameters, crucial for distinguishing between normal and pathological conditions in this specific ethnic group.
This research holds immense significance as racial variations in optic disc evaluation can greatly impact the accurate diagnosis of glaucoma and other optic nerve conditions. Jenisha's work seeks to bridge this gap by shedding light on the distinct cup disc parameters within the Tibeto-Nepalese community, potentially revolutionizing glaucoma evaluation in this population.

We proudly support the Bachelor's thesis of Akriti Dhakal, Kalpana Timilsina, Priyanka Shrestha, and Ram Kishor Yadav, students at Pokhara University studying pharmacy. They've received a grant to delve into the scientific exploration of ethnomedicinally potent wild plants found in Nepal!
Their work focuses on isolating active chemical compounds from Angiopteris helferiana (ΰ€°ΰ€Ύΰ€€ΰ₯ ΰ€ΰ€Ύΰ€ ΰ€ΰ₯ΰ€°ΰ₯) Rhizomes and Saurauia fasciculata (ΰ€ΰ₯ΰ€¬ΰ€Ύΰ€¨) Barks. By employing sophisticated analytical techniques like chromatography and spectroscopy, they aim to uncover complex chemical structures and explore antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
This research isn't just about science; it's about bridging the gap between traditional medicine and modern science, aiming to generate evidence that supports the use of these medicinal plants for treating ailments. Their findings could pave the way for novel therapeutic agents in the future and even contribute to the conservation of these wild plant species in Gandaki Province.
We awarded Sandesh Poudel a grant for his Master's thesis at Pokhara University. Congratulations to Sandesh, a dedicated pharmacy student!
His research focuses on exploring the antimicrobial potential of traditional medicinal plants in Nepal. Through extensive lab work and testing, he aims to isolate chemical compounds with antibiotic properties from these plants.
