This issue has often plagued me!
I like to contently explore new genres and styles, looking for creativity. But there's also the very real psychological aspects mentioned in this article.
It also affects how I write music as my roots go back to the 70s and 80s, meaning that in many ways, I'm isolating myself from the mainstream youth audience (not that I've found any audience really :D )

Roped In, by North Americans 9 track album

So... Spotify are changing the way they pay streaming royalties.

Now, an artist gets nothing until they reach 1000 plays. The money from those unpaid artists goes into a slush fund which is then distributed to those who reached the threshold, and paid to them pro rata.

This means that the $1.65 someone might make from their streams reduces to zero, and instead, goes to those fortunate enough to get 1000 plays.

Is this fair? There are justifications, of course, but ultimately it pushes what little hope some have for their art, further into the realms of "waste of time".

As for me, I'll continue to write and publish, and hopefully you guys will jump on to Spotify to help me reach that target. But it does make it all seem even more useless than ever :/

There are other platforms though, and I'll always promote Bandcamp, because at least people actually buy music there :P
